Thanks to its good bulk, decent Speed tier, and great STAB combination, Volcarona is a potent setup sweeper. Volcarona is also able to check a plethora of prominent Pokemon such as Kyurem, Hydreigon, Calm Mind Clefable, Magearna, and Mega Scizor and Mega Mawile lacking Knock Off. Flamethrower is chosen over Fiery Dance and Fire Blast as Volcarona’s Fire-type STAB move due to its higher PP and perfect accuracy. Roost allows Volcarona to stay healthy throughout the match, lets it continue to check threats such as Hydreigon, Magearna, and Kyurem, and makes it harder to revenge kill. Heavy-Duty Boots is the item of choice, as it removes Volcarona's crippling weakness to Stealth Rock and other entry hazards. Flame Body allows Volcarona to potentially burn Pokemon using contact moves and Pokemon that try to pick it off with priority such as Mega Lopunny. Maximum HP investment allows Volcarona to more easily set up with Quiver Dance and gives it the bulk necessary to check the Pokemon that it is tasked with. 252 Speed EVs with a Timid Nature let Volcarona outspeed Hydreigon and Kyurem without any Quiver Dances, allowing it to force them out.
Volcarona can fit on balance and bulky offense teams due to its ability to check a myriad of threats while also acting as a potent wincon. It appreciates teammates such as Gliscor and Mega Tyranitar that can soak up Knock Off from the likes of Clefable and Tangrowth. Both are also capable of taking advantage of Heatran, while Gliscor also exploits Toxapex, which are two of the best checks to Volcarona. Strong wallbreakers such as the aforementioned Gliscor, as well as the likes of Hydreigon, Kartana, Excadrill, and Mega Mawile, are great teammates as well, since they are able to overwhelm the opposition to the extent where Volcarona can clean up late-game. Lastly, Defoggers such as Zapdos, Corviknight, and Tapu Fini are advisable teammates in case Volcarona loses Heavy-Duty Boots, since many Pokemon it wants to switch into, such as Ferrothorn, Mega Scizor, and Kartana, commonly carry Knock Off.

Offensive Volcarona is able to clean up games relatively easily after its checks have been weakened sufficiently. Hidden Power Ground is important, as it is Volcarona's only option for hitting Heatran. Heavy-Duty Boots removes Volcarona's glaring 4x weakness to Stealth Rock, which reduces the pressure for your Defogger to get hazards off the field. Buginium Z is an option, as when used in tandem with Bug Buzz, it allows Volcarona to OHKO Tyranitar, Garchomp and Hippowdon at +1 with Savage Spin-Out. Psychium Z is another good option, as if you choose to run Psychic instead of Hidden Power Ground, Volcarona can use Shattered Psyche to OHKO Toxapex at +1. However, if holding a Z Crystal, Volcarona's 4x weakness to Stealth Rock once again becomes a problem, and, in Psychium Z's case, you lose Hidden Power Ground, which is essential for touching Heatran. Flame Body allows Volcarona to potentially burn Pokemon that try to pick it off with priority such as Mega Lopunny.
Volcarona best fits on bulky offense teams due to its ability to effectively clean up weakened teams. Mega Mawile is an excellent partner, as it can easily break and weaken checks to Volcarona such as Heatran, Toxapex, and Tapu Fini. Mega Mawile also appreciates Volcarona's ability to take advantage of its checks, including Mega Scizor, Melmetal, Corviknight, and Tangrowth. Due to Volcarona's lack of recovery and mediocre bulk, a defensive backbone allows Volcarona to stay safe. Checks to Heatran, such as Gliscor and Tapu Fini, and checks to Garchomp, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Tyranitar, such as Hippowdon, Corviknight, and Tangrowth, are particularly important. Tapu Fini is particularly great, as it is able to check Heatran, cripple Toxapex with Knock Off, invite Grass-types such as Rillaboom and Ferrothorn in as setup fodder for Volcarona, and provide a status immunity thanks to Misty Surge, allowing Volcarona to set up more easily.
