What is a Walrus?
Walrus is a semi-competitive game we used to play on Circus after it migrated here from elsewhere. Entrants submit a song for each category the host creates, trying to best match the category with something they think the host will like. The goal is to give the host new music to listen to, so these submissions should be songs they have not heard 1000 times before. The host then rates all songs submitted per category, and the entrants are awarded points based on their rating. This is on a scale of 0-10, and I am not afraid to award 0's if your song blows.

Category song submissions and their scores are announced on a schedule after submissions close.

How do you grade?
I am probably rather infamously one of the harsher graders and will give songs bad scores if I don't like them. And I didn't like a lot of songs lmao. If I don't want them in my YouTube history to find later, your score will reflect that. I don't award bonus points.

Will Ampharos find a song I like this time? Will DLE, the highest-placing user still around, repeat his performance? Have my musical tastes changed at all? Stay tuned to find out.

How to submit?
Smogon PM me the following filled-out list with a YouTube link to each song, prior to the deadline. Do not submit via Discord please, though you can ask questions via Discord if you have any I suppose. Make sure your link goes to the version you want me to listen to.

THE PANDER LIST
I know virtually every song from these artists. Submitting them to any category but the final one will net you a 0.
Duran Duran
Ladytron
Metric
The Magnetic Fields
Electric Light Orchestra
Crystal Castles
The Dollyrots
Tegan and Sara
Freezepop
Depeche Mode

What do you like?
Well, the above list should be a good starting point lol. I like synth pop and various types of rock. I would say I like the 60s and 80s more than the 70s and 90s. I do not like country, jazz, bluegrass, kpop, or particularly screamy/noisy metal. Disco, rap, and other genres are song-dependent. I tend to prefer fast songs to slow ones. I HATE live music/crowd noise, and music videos that have ambient sound that isn't part of the song. Keep this in mind when choosing (IE Telephone's music video would score far lower than Telephone's Topic video).

CATEGORIES
Category 1: The Best Instrument Part 2, Electric Barbarella Boogaloo

Surprise, I still like the synth. Submit a song that has a synthesizer on it, and make sure the synth beat is sick.
Example: Duran Duran - Electric Barbarella

Category 2: Triangle at the Talent Show
Submit a song that features an instrument that is NOT: piano/keyboard, synthesizer, standard drum set, guitar (any standard guitar). The song can have all of these instruments, but it must have at least one instrument that is unusual/different. Please state what instrument(s) your song has.
Example: The Beatles - Within You Without You (sitar)

Category 3: Y2K
Submit a song from 1997-2003 that has that certain sound of the era. No other restrictions.
Example: SR-71 - Right Now

Category 4: That was a Sharp Transition
Submit two songs that give you whiplash when played back to back. This can be beat/sound, lyrics, genre, any of the above. Points will be awarded for how disparate they are, as well as how much I like both. Place them in the order you want me to listen to them in.
Example: Herman's Hermits - I'm Into Something Good --> Korn - Here to Stay

Category 5: Humiliation Kink
Submit a song you think I will absolutely loathe. This category will be rated like usual, but your actual score for the game will be 10-CAT5 RATING. So if I give your song a 1 because it sucks a lot, your points will be 9. I roasted a lot of submissions the first time around. Find out how my insults have evolved!
Example: Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe

Category 6: Biggest Suck Up
Submit a song by an artist from the pander list, attempting to pick what song you think I like the best. If you are not familiar with any of the artists on the pander list, you can submit a similar synth pop/rock song.
Example: Duran Duran - Electric Barbarella (since it was already used and is THE favorite, you may not submit this song)

Submissions Close At
2pm Pacific on Thursday, 1/9. This gives you a few days to think about your choices, or just yolo and send it if you don't want to be that sweaty. I will then listen to and grade each category, then schedule the announcement time. I will decide what existing Discord server we will do the reveal listens on and provide the invite link.

I have absolutely no idea who any of these people are. This definitely bodes well for me.

I will listen to Category 1, Songs with a Synth, first. Category 1 reveal will start tomorrow at 5pm Pacific. Come to the #walrus channel of the Circus Maximus Tent City https://discord.gg/UhggREud for the live reveal. Or just read in thread after I post all the songs and scores. I have only heard of three of the artists in Cat 1 so let's explore some new music!

Category 1: Songs with a Synthesizer (the best instrument)

First off, thanks everyone for submitting! My scores tend to not be very high because I grade off how well I like the song (in comparison to songs I love) as opposed to grading the songs solely against their competition in each category. Few things can breach an 8 score, and even fewer 9 or above.

I will post the Cat 1 songs in order from least to most points.

Kicking the Walrus off, we have the first of many OST songs submitted.

Gato Roboto OST - Heater Core
Subbed by ImaginaryNeon
Score: 3
Another OST and this one is 1/6th the length of the one before it lol. At least it had the decency to be short. It starts picking up but it feels like it's probably better in-game with stuff going on than as a solo song to jam to.

Next up we have a new name to Circus (our mafia part of it, anyway). Hi and welcome!

Yanni - Standing In Motion
Subbed by Lectrys
Score: 4.9
Boring af first third but then the beat picks up and it's doing something. Definitely fades into the background though. YouTube started auto-playing another song by the artist that I like better lmao.

Third from the bottom we have everyone's favorite neutral.

Don Toliver - No Pole
Subbed by Dead by Daylight
Score: 5
The beat started generic and then the lyrics hit lmao and it was, in fact, about that kind of pole. It's not Bad but there isn't a lot going on and it's kinda slow. It also feels like this drum beat was lifted from GarageBand's prerecorded options or something.

Coming in fourth from the bottom, we have a song from a band who could have placed much higher, if you sent one of their better songs. I will admit this song is the one that's stuck in my head from this round but only for how annoying and repetitive the wubby M-M-M-M-M-M part is.

Muse - Madness
Subbed by UncleSam
Score: 5.9
Madness is a weird choice to me if you're going to sub a Muse song because it's pretty slow and not a lot goes on until the last third. Like I'd think you'd go for Starlight or something. I gotta be honest when this song shows up in YouTube autoplays I'm kind of annoyed because it's a drag lol.

I am not entirely sure of the story behind this song but it seems to be part of some dude's YouTube narrative by song.

Jorge Rivera-Herrans - Dangerous
Subbed by Lechen
Score: 6
First thought once the vocals started is this guy is NOT paid to be a singer lol. There's a lack of vocal strength there that undermines the song, and I am pretty picky about vocal quality. Beat is poppin' though, if you slapped some better lyrics/singing over the beat this song would probably be in the 8s. I don't love that it's essentially just sing-telling the narrative for a lot of it.

Another entry from the OSTs fans comes in next, and I feel the mid-6 range is where I started to actually enjoy some of the songs as opposed to tolerating them through their flaws.

FFXIV OST - Solution Nine Theme "Starless Skyline"
Subbed by theangryscientist
Score: 6.4
I sorted these alphabetically and blacked out the Smogon users, so this is the first of the video game OSTs to be subbed that I am listening to. 6:46 is a VERY long song unless there is a lot going on. This is like, the definition of lo-fi beats to study to lmao. It's pleasant but it's innocuous and the definition of background music. I can see myself putting this on on a day at work where I have a headache and want like, something playing, but not something aggro.

I thought I knew what this song was when it was subbed but once I listened to it, I realized I did not, in fact, know this song.

Howard Jones - Like To Get To Know You Well
Subbed by CrreamyKitty
Score: 6.6
I don't know how to feel about this. It's not bad and it's definitely an 80s beat with songs it's similar to but I kind of keep forgetting I'm listening to it. It's not bad but it's a little too low-key for me. Nice beat.

I don't know if this is supposed to be part of an OST or where this song came from but it was kinda vibing.

Anders Enger Jensen - MCA DiscoVision
Subbed by pulsar512b
Score: 7
The beat is good, don't super love the spoken dialogue though it does feel like it fits the song/vibe. My first instinct is to give this a 7 (which for me is a high score lmao) but I may reconsider after listening to them all. Spoilers: I did not reconsider.

This video is a little cringe lmao but the beat was good.

HalaCG - If I'm Dreaming
Subbed by Aura Guardian
Score: 7.4
It's a Teen Titans AMV lmfao. It's probably the peppiest of the songs subbed to this cat so far. I don't know if I love it but I like it. I started this one at a 7.4 and I might shift it higher. I need to think on it.

And now the podium for Category 1, featuring users Ampharos, Da Letter El, and Gmax.

In third place, we have a song by a band I have listened to before and like, though I have not heard this entry.

Shiny Toy Guns - You Are the One
Subbed by Da Letter El
Score: 7.9
I have listened to some other songs off this Shiny Toy Guns album but I don't think I have heard this one. It caught me off guard the first singer was a male, I'm used to just the female one lol. I think this is not as strong of an entry for this band as some other songs could have been but the beat is good. The synth is vibing.

In second place, we have the leader of the category for about 3 songs before being usurped by the final submission.

Keane - Black Burning Heart
Subbed by Gmax
Score: 8.1
The submitted video link must be region-locked because YouTube told me video unavailable lol. This is the best song subbed for this category so far, and there are only 4 left after it. Beat is good and dude has stronger pipes than the song above (which was Dangerous). I like this one, no qualifiers needed.

This song region locks hard so if the above does not work for your country please see:

Which means, in first place for the first time ever, making up for her abysmal performance in my first Walrus...

Terror Pigeon - Girl!
Subbed by Ampharos
Score: 8.5
Nah this one slaps. I sometimes jive to this kind of indie music that isn't as overwhelmingly go-go-go as the really romping synth pop. The back third isn't as good as the first two thirds it's got a stretch that could've been cut lol
