Watchmen

Seriously, like the best graphic novel ever. Go out and read it. I won't spoil the plot of the novel, but I am posting the movie trailer and some cool pictures here to pique interest. It's basically a part mystery, part superhero story. It's done very well. It will easily become one of your favorite pieces of literature.

My favorite character is Rorschach for obvious reasons. So yeah, go out and read this as soon as you can. At least before the movie comes out anyways.

Watchmen is amazing...A great story, wrought with symbolism, and politically relevant even today.

I have never been more excited for any piece of media...the movie is going to be awesome!

This doesn't disappoint, and i really loved the amount of care put into it and the look at superheroes/(superantiheroes) as generally fucked up people.

I didn't fall in love with the story but really respected it as a complete work. The movie looks great in that it pretty much uses the graphic novel directly as a storyboard, but i feel like it will probably downplay the ruggedness of the pen+ink work.

ps skiddle since when are you a sociopath/misanthrope/insanely fundementalist awesome crazy dude?

It's pretty cool, it was weird for me as I saw the trailer first, and as I was reading through it I kept flipping back to the trailer and slowly recognized each of the parts of it.

I enjoyed it though, the ending was just crazy nutsos.

Ah Rorschach rules, I was going to make him into an avator too sometime, heh, way too cool guy. Got more amazing as it went on in my opinion. Also some of the deeper tones in the book were well done especially how the characters react in the end.

Also looking forward to the movie, somehow I've got to explain to friends why we've got to see it (maybe I'll just lower myself down, and give the wrong impression, by saying it was by the director of 300 even though this deal is NOT an action piece, but a mystery one with lots of backround and stuff.)

lol, no, I don't have anything in common with rorschach except "awesome"

He's just the coolest character because he's violent, cool, calculating and has a strong sense of right and wrong. Other characters are like, "what should we do in this situation" and Rorschach is like "kill bad guys"

i hate reading pretty much everything, but I loved this piece of fiction.

And I thought comic books were for nerds...

The movie is not gonna have the "squid ending". How dumb is that? I'm hoping they can turn the story in another direction though. After all, no squid makes the story really different.

No squid ending? That to me almost makes me think I might like to watch this..

I mean if it was just gonna follow the comic then I wouldnt really be interested. It sorta becomes a case of "marvel at our ability to transpose this story from one media to another as accurately as possible" rather than you know, enjoying the storyline or whatever..

But to be honest the actual plot of Watchmen I always thought was a little weak.. I mean there are a lot of points. But specifically about the squid, I was pretty dissapointed that right at the end there the mention of psychic powers appears without any prior mention or justification. It is a pretty minor point, and maybe that is the kind of thing people who read comic books expect, but to me it was just annoying..

But yeah, my opinion of plots generally is that they are for books (or movies) that have shitty characters.

Have a nice day.

Watchmen pretty much got me interested in Graphic Novels/Comics/whatever you want to call them but the squid was a bit disapointing. I mean, with the obvious amount of thought and care that went into the rest of the story, it feels like that particular part was half-assed. The 'bad-guy' in the end makes perfect sense once you think about it, the reasonings behind why people did stuff seemed to make sense better then alot of stuff Ive read (comics or otherwise)..

Also, Rorshach is my favorite as well, I just hope he doesnt become the next Hot Topic store fad..

I have a huge ass poster of him that takes up half my door space (thats a nice thing to fall asleep/wake up to..)

Well a large part of the novel is about challenging perceptions; about the fact that there is often no "right" or "wrong"; about the not-so-fine line between a hero and a villain.

So the ending makes sense if you look at it like that (would go into more detail but I don't want to ruin the end of the book for anyone...)

EDIT: Yeah I guess you're right the psychic squid was a bit of a stretch lol

Thats what I was meaning, the ending made sense and was in sync with the book, its the squid that i was refering to by 'that particular part'

the squid was psychic? maybe i dont remember it but i thought it was just teleported there and "died." and then there was peace.

also my fav char is mr. manhatten (and not because hes naked)

Quotes from Ozymandias near the end of the book...

"Very well: Once more: I engineered a monster, cloned its brain from a psychic, sent it to New York...."

and then: "The psychic was the key. Poor young Robert Deschaines, I acquired his brain after his death and my geneticists cloned something much bigger and more powerful from it, incorporating it into my creature. The brain was a psychic resonator. It would amplify a signal pulse and broadcast it, the signal triggered by the onset of death."

So yeah it was a psychic squid >_>

Anyway, my favorite character is probably Nite Owl. He has all the cool gadgets =)

I had a buddy show me this comic in my Geometry class, and I read it in about 15 class periods, and I was amazed, so I can probably expect this movie to be the same.

Me and some teachers from school are seeing the movie opening night, and I can't wait to see it, regardless of the changed ending/plot changes/differences. Although I dont expect there to be TOO much missing, since the movie is going to clock in at 2 hours 43 minutes.

As for the novel, it is one of the greatest things I have ever read, and the only way to properly describe how I felt reading it is "Watchmen" :)

i liked this book before it was cool :/

anyway, best novel i've ever read. my friend showed it to me a couple years back and i was blown away.

v for vendetta is a really good one of his too but it's not quite as powerful as watchmen!

but i haven't really been following the production of the movie very much out of wanting to save myself from worrying about them fucking it up, and the fact that theyre not doing the squid ending strikes me as a bit stupid.

how do they expect to show off rorschach's unwavering will without it?

I don't know tbh... I guess the squid's power had an affect on all of them at the end, except for rorschach. How are they going to explain them all becoming worrisome pussies... :/

I'm sure they'll just replace the squid with something else and do exactly the same thing. I'm pretty sure rorschach will end up doing exactly what he did in the comic.. Diary and all..

Have a nice day.

V for Vendetta is one of my favorite movies, I loved the novel, I felt like it expanded on alot of the stuff in the movie, giving insight on why/how shit happened, like how the explosions actually were started..

I never saw the movie, but after reading Watchmen I figured this guy knew what was up and I read V for Vendetta. It did not disappoint. For anyone who has read Watchmen but not V for Vendetta, I would strongly recommend reading it. Well worth the $20 or whatever.

Also, don't they discuss the explosions in detail in the book? I'm going to check it...

EDIT: My knowledge of comics doesn't extend much past these two graphic novels and Marvel's "Civil War" series, but a comic thread would be a cool thing to have.

V for Vendetta was pretty good yeah. Also if you enjoy Batman, check out 'The Killing Joke', written by Alan Moore as well. It's amazing.

How'd you guys feel about a comic book thread :O there's a lot of stuff I'd like to recommend and discuss regarding comics

Alan Moore is pretty nearly always incredible lol I mean The Killing Joke is super popular and he thinks it is one of the worst comics he ever wrote...

I am sure a million people already thought this, but this being turned into a movie really does make the 'who watches the Watchmen' line a little absurdist since millions of people will all watch them...lol

Anyway, Watchmen is possibly the greatest writing of all time, so any movie will both tarnish it and be a fun ride.
