Whimsicott (Analysis)

Cottonee outclasses Whimsicott at Level 1 FEAR:

Cottonee @ Focus Sash / Balloon / Bright Powder
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Encore
- Endeavor
Nature: Hasty
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 0 HP IV, 252 Speed

Speed EVs to outspeed other Level 1 Pokemon. 0 HP IV leaves you at 11 HP for 2 HP Substitutes (You can make 5 of them while Whimsicott can only make 4 that have 3 HP each) Substitute and Leech Seed have to be there obviously. Micle Berry is not released and Encore is better than putting 1 Pokemon to sleep. Chances are, they leave the sleep fodder and you only get to set up your Sub-Seed combination once. Encore lets you switch in on a safe move like a Dragon Dance and trap the opponent on the move. You can then start Sub-Seeding away. If a Grass-type comes in, you get to Endeavor it. It will be left at low HP, making it impossible to come back in next time to counter you due to Stealth Rock. Endeavor also lets you deal with stubborn walls that have healing moves. Encore them into the healing move, Leech Seed them and then Endeavor for the KO. (Leech Seed picks them off before Leftovers heal them) Endeavor also nails people who think they can U-turn or Volt Switch out of your Leech Seeds.

Balloon gives you immunity to Ground-moves and lets you switch in more. It's so much fun trapping Excadrill on either Earthquake and Swords Dance and then forcing it out. Focus Sash gives you a turn of free Leech Seeds without risking your life although entry hazards may get in the way. (It can heal back to full health if you can get Leech Seeds off though, restoring the Sash) Bright Powder's point is the pray to the hax gods and hope your opponent misses on 1 of your 5 Substitutes and then play from there. (Not recommended though)

There is no way that any FEAR type set besides one used by Cleffa/Celfairy/Clefable will ever make it into an analysis. There is just way too much hazard use and Sand is so common which also destroys the whole sets purpose.

Well, hazards don't exactly bother Cottonee or Whimsicott due to Leech Seed healing you to full health at the end of the turn. Sandstorm just hinders you from using the Focus Sash, which isn't always needed due to Encore.

Nevertheless, a hindering nature reducing Attack or SpA is always best, since Whimsicott takes less damage from confusion (Bold), and sometimes the Speed helps in rare, but possible cases. Therefore, Speed-hindering natures are pretty much out of the question, since Bold or Impish are better for marginal reasons. In fact, I don't think Impish should get a slash, since U-Turn already does some pathetic damage, and "increasing it" using a Special Attack hindering nature doesn't help. Bold, again, is marginally better in nearly all cases.

By the way, I this isn't the correct thread to discuss in-game RNG breeding.

Bold and 0 Atk to reduce damage in case of confusion? Even if confusion were common (which it isn't), it wouldn't be worth reducing U-turn damage which, pitiful or not, all stacks up in the end and lands a good solid hit on a few things that just love switching into Erufuun (Latios, Grass types, Starmie etc)

0 Atk 0 IV Bold confusion damage vs 252/252+ Erufuun = 4-5%
0 Atk 31 IV Impish confusion damage vs 252/252+ Erufuun = 5-6%

0 Atk 0 IV Bold U-turn vs 4/0 Latios = 21-25%
0 Atk 31 IV Impish U-turn vs 4/0 Latios = 29-35%

Pretty obvious which is more beneficial.

good job r_d, I like your writing style.

This has been fully QC approved two times before, so I'll just give this one big QC approval for Rising_Dusk so he can begin writing this analysis!

I had already slashed Impish in the set for when you are using U-turn, so I agree with you. I will make that more clear in the OP though once it is written up. Right now there's just like a paragraph explaining it in the AC bullet points; I'll try to make it more obvious.

I've been using a Tailwind/Memento Whimsicott to support my team.

Team Player
Whimsicott @ Eject Button
- Tailwind
- Memento
- Stun Spore
- Hurricane / Taunt
Nature: Timid
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP, 252 Spd, 4 SpA

Round one you either Stun Spore or Tailwind, depending on whether or not you feel you need to cripple the other poke or predict a chance to set up a booster of your own. This is also somewhat determined on the fact that they're going to hit you at all, and if that's not the case Taunt or again Stun Spore is the better opening move.

Swap out to something like Suicune, Reuniclus, Lucario, or what have you and get your boost in if they've been properly crippled.

Later you can bring him back to use Memento and offer you the potential to get another booster out and a free boost as they switch out.

Alternatively, if you brought out a Politoed or had some rain going by some other means, you can pop out Hurricane if you NEED to get offensive.

Would Cotton Guard work over Taunt or Stun Spore? I've been running it on my Whimsicott and it threw off some people going for a Fire Punch or Ice Punch effectively chopping it in half.

Yes, and it will get mentioned in that overwhelming OC section. Whimsicott literally has tons of options that need to get mentioned, but we aren't going to overflow the main set itself with them.

As an aside....
I love writing analyses some days. This is ready for 'dem GP checks now, or at least that's what I'm supposed to tell you.

[Overview]

<p>It's typical of Game Freak to create a wicked new ability in Prankster, which gives all support moves +1 priority, and then create exactly one Pokemon with all the gadgetry necessary to abuse every facet of it. Whimsicott is that Pokemon. Filled to the brim with nearly every support move you could possibly want bar entry hazards, Whimsicott is a supremely effective momentum grabber, stat-booster check, and general annoyance to anything on the receiving end of its boundless movepool.</p>

<p>Whimsicott, while amazing in its ability to support its team, is a victim of circumstance and nothing more. While it is very cool that it can check pretty much any set-up sweeper, Whimsicott requires nigh-perfect prediction for it to be worth its weight on your team. Whimsicott's bulky, don't get me wrong, but you don't want to switch Whimsicott in accidentally on an attack that even 3HKOes it, because Whimsicott won't be able to set up properly and will either get beaten soundly or forced back out to another Pokemon. In this sense, Whimsicott doesn't really check Pokemon like other, more popular Pokemon can, and this is really the reason for Whimsicott's lack of usage. You can't—or rather, won't—switch Whimsicott into even Grass-weak Pokemon to threaten them out, as that's just not how Whimsicott works. You'll be relying on Encore, Taunt, Substitute, and other tricks to screw them up and force them out so Whimsicott can do its job. If you aren't planning on doing that, then stop right now and pick a different Grass-type Pokemon, such as Virizion or Ferrothorn. Don't let me turn you off of using Whimsicott totally, though; it's a seriously solid Pokemon if you can play to its incredibly specific strengths and predict like a beast capable of winning the Smogon Tour. All I've got to say is: "You've been warned."</p>

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>I know what you're thinking: "This set has very few options in it, where are the rest?" Keep your pants on, because while Whimsicott has literally dozens of tricks it can play, what you see before you is the most reliable and best combination possible. If you want to adjust it to your tastes, be my guest, but this here is what the professionals do.</p>

<p>That said, Encore is perhaps the single greatest move available to Whimsicott. You can switch Whimsicott into any stat-boosting or otherwise non-threatening move, Encore it, and then completely go to town. Encore also doubles as insurance against anything that tries to set up on Whimsicott. Nothing will attempt a Dragon Dance, Swords Dance, Nasty Plot, Substitute, or whatever against Whimsicott thanks to the threat of Encore. Whimsicott's next best bet at annoying opponents is with its priority Leech Seed, which screws up and wears down anything that isn't Grass-type. After that, Substitute and U-turn are both good options. Substitute allows Whimsicott to wither down many opposing Pokemon as they fumble to break Substitutes and force Whimsicott out. U-turn is a better option for offensive teams that want to bounce out and use Leech Seed healing and an offensive threat to force switches and sweep. Stun Spore in the last slot is spectacular at paralyzing and stunting the sweeps of everything from Excadrill to Terrakion to Latios to Thundurus. Meanwhile, Taunt can be useful at keeping something like Ferrothorn from coming in and throwing up layers of Spikes as Whimsicott looks on helplessly. Like I said before, these are just the most reliable choices for moves, you can mix and match pretty much anything in Whimsicott's movepool to create a cool and personalized variant of this fluff ball.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>Because of Prankster, there's no reason to invest in Whimsicott's Speed stat at all. Instead, all EVs are allocated to physical bulk so that Whimsicott can take stray physical attacks from physical set-up sweepers like Excadrill, Landorus, and Terrakion as it switches in to Encore their boosting move. This also makes Whimsicott's Substitute tougher to break, should you be running that. 0 Attack IVs should only be used if Substitute is used over U-turn, and only for the off chance that Whimsicott somehow gets confused and hits itself. Otherwise, stick with 31 Attack IVs. Bold being used over Impish is in a similar vein; Bold with Substitute, and Impish with U-turn. Also, you can invest Whimsicott's EVs in special bulk if your team calls for it. In that case, a Calm or Careful nature would be the way to go.</p>

<p>In some sense, Cottonee, Whimsicott's pre-evolution, is a better Pokemon than Whimsicott. Because offenses and Speed don't matter for a set like this, and considering the existence of Eviolite, it'd appear at first glance that you should always use Cottonee over Whimsicott. However, being able to use Leftovers is a huge deal for Whimsicott, because Leftovers recovery coupled with Leech Seed recovery can replenish the HP lost from Substitute at an alarming rate. Let this both be your reason to use Whimsicott and your reason to use Leftovers as the item.</p>

<p>Whimsicott is not usually a Pokemon that you specifically use other Pokemon with, rather it fills gaps in a team or provides specific team support that is needed. For instance, a lot of teams have problems with fast Speed-boosting sweepers and can't afford to pack a Choice Scarf Pokemon. These types of teams greatly benefit from Whimsicott's solid bulk and priority Encore to check those threats. Whimsicott doesn't like attackers with super effective attacks that have just switched in, because then it can't Encore to stop the attack. Even Water-types can seriously threaten Whimsicott if packing Ice Beam, since Whimsicott's almost never packing an attack of its own. Whimsicott also appreciates being used on a rain team for the decrease in Fire-type damage taken and in order to maintain its Leftovers recovery. The Pokemon typically used in rain, such as Thundurus, also happen to partner well with Whimsicott, especially when Whimsicott is bouncing around with U-turn. Thundurus just loves free switch-ins. Speaking of Thundurus, offensive Pokemon in general can take advantage of double switches forced by Whimsicott's Encore followed by U-turn to pivot in and immediately threaten the opponent's team. Good choices for this can range from Terrakion to Tornadus to Reuniclus to Garchomp. Lastly, due to Whimsicott's niche-checking playstyle, it's good to support it with both entry hazards to abuse its ability to force switches and switch-ins to Fire- and Ice-type attacks. Depending on the type of team Whimsicott's being used on, this might mean that Heatran is a good choice, or it may mean that Jellicent is a good choice. Use your best judgment and Whimsicott will serve you well.</p>

[Other Options]

<p>I had originally prepared an amazing paragraph for you to read, but rather than shoving a couple hundred words down your throat, I will instead just list the myriad of support moves that Whimsicott is able to abuse successfully: Cotton Spore, Cotton Guard, Tailwind, Charm, GrassWhistle, Memento, Switcheroo, Toxic, Sunny Day, Rain Dance, Light Screen, and Trick Room. Each of these has niche value on Whimsicott for specific teams, so you should amuse yourself and experiment with them to find the best combination for what you want to achieve. Lastly, you might sometimes desperately want an attacking move on Whimsicott for whatever reason. If you must, Giga Drain is the way to go, although Hidden Power Fire isn't bad for opposing Grass-types. Just remember that Whimsicott is pitifully weak offensively, and even moreso if you're not investing any EVs in its Special Attack.</p>

[Checks and Counters]

<p>Do yourself a favor and don't switch in something in an attempt to use Whimsicott as set-up fodder. That only works if Whimsicott both lacks Taunt and you're setting up entry hazards or ordering your own Pokemon to use Taunt. Speaking of Taunt, it's the best way to guarantee that you can force Whimsicott out. Thundurus happens to be faster than 0 Speed Whimsicott and has Prankster itself to Taunt before Whimsicott can do anything. Since Whimsicott almost never runs an attacking move, this either makes it kill itself with Struggle or gives Thundurus a free turn to attack.</p>

<p>Outside of the obvious Taunt, the best way to get by Whimsicott is to just hit it until it dies. Even Pokemon that normally don't like Grass-types, such as bulky Water-type Pokemon, can give Whimsicott trouble just by just spamming Ice Beam. Most of these Pokemon won't like suffering the withering effects of Leech Seed, but a few can get around it. Whimsicott will only hurt itself if it tries to Leech Seed against Tentacruel, for instance, while Tentacruel can either smash it with STAB Sludge Bomb or set up Toxic Spikes without issue. Ludicolo packing Rain Dish under rain can be a real pain for Whimsicott, as it can't just keep taking rain-boosted Scalds or super effective Ice Beams. Using a Grass-type of your own is also a surefire way to put a damper on Whimsicott's shenanigans. Virizion can come in and use Hidden Power Ice to force Whimsicott out, while Ferrothorn can come in and either attempt to set up Spikes or do serious damage with Gyro Ball. (Rain Dish Ludicolo packing Rain Dish under rain can be a real pain for Whimsicott in the rain, as it just doesn't take rain-boosted Scalds or super effective Ice Beams all that well.) (moved) Other less common Grass-types, such as Celebi, Shaymin, and Breloom, work as well if they just outright attack Whimsicott, but won't appreciate a U-turn to a typical check like Tornadus. Either way, just remember that Whimsicott is not an offensive threat in any manner, and if you're carrying any of the aforementioned checks, you'll probably fare just fine against it.</p>

[Dream World]

<p>No. Don't use Chlorophyll, use Prankster. If you really want to use Chlorophyll, change Whimsicott's species to Venusaur and try again.</p>

i'm a pretty little fairy :3

Wow. Now I feel that everyone will know why you are the head of the GP team. Great analysis, the only thing that I changed was word order really, and I only did that like, twice?
Good job.

Updated with your changes, dino. Thanks for the check! You caught some good things, so I'll go ahead and throw a stamp at it.
contrib_gp.png

That makes this done! Great work all! :)

I use 252 Def / 252 Sp. Def / 4 HP. This way, Leech Seed recovers a higher percentage so Substitute can be used more often. It works for me anyway.

248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe is a superior EV spread to the one which is currently in the analysis, as it meshes much better with the third moveslot.

If Whimsicott is running Substitute:
Running 252 HP EVs gives Whimsicott an HP stat of 324. This means that it will be recovering 20 HP every turn with Leftovers. Now, with 324 HP, you'll create 81 HP Substitutes, meaning that you can make 4 Substitutes in a row, and then you will have 80 remaining.
However, by running 248 EVs, Whimsicott will have an HP stat of 323. This means that you'll still be recovering 20 HP every turn with Leftovers, but you'll now be making 80 HP Substitutes. That allows you to use Substitute 5 times in a row.

If you're running U-Turn:
With 0 Speed EVs, Whimsicott has a Speed stat of 268.
However, with 8 Speed EVs, Whimsicott reaches 270 Speed. This allows it to out-run max Speed neutral natured base 85's. That means that Whimsicott can U-Turn away from that Toxicroak before it gets Drain Punched. It allows Whimsicott to U-Turn away from Kingdra, Suicune, Nidoking, Heracross, etc. before they can hurt it.
If they come in on Whimsicott, they will not have used a move yet, meaning that you cannot Encore them into harmlessness. With most of the aforementioned Pokemon, you won't want to Seed them either, as they can hit Whimsicott super effectively. In that case, it would be beneficial to be able to escape by some means other than switching, which 8 Speed EVs would allow for.

the opening post makes it sound like whimsicott is hard to use....

he takes about as little skill as breloom/machamp

Worry Seed should be mentioned in other options.

It trolls pokemon like Poison heal breloom and gliscor, basically forcing them to switch if they don't want to die by toxic and can stop a sweep from Excadrill and Venusuar since they lose their double speed in the weather.

And it also annoys the likes of Magic Guard Reuniclus, Liquid Ooze Tentacruel and Guts Conkeldurr (if statused) and possibly heaps of other examples I can't think of at the moment.

I just think it's worth a mention that's all.

I agree with the above poster!
In this metagame the first poke that the opponent will be bringing in when they see Whimsi, except from grass types is Gliscor. And you know what happens when Gliscor loses its ability right?
Half of Whimsi's checks are all highly annoyed by Worry Seed.Let's see a list of pokes that will immediately switch in if you have Whimsi out:
Virizion,Ferro,Celebi,Breloom,Reuniclus and Gliscor. The first 4 don't fear the green pixie 'cause of typing while the latest 2 'cause of ability.
Worry Seed greatly hampers 3 out of 6 of Whimsi's immediate switch-ins.
Of 'course Worry Seed serves many other purposes aswell! It works like Cotton Spore against Sand Rush or Chlorophyll or it works like Mold Breaker against pokes that have move absorbing abilities.
I think that slashing Worry Seed in the 4th slot or at least mentioning it in the 'Other options' section is almost mandatory...
