Why NFEs Kick Ass in UU

Hi there people. If you've seen the name Lii93 on Smogon's Pokemon Online server, that's me. I tried changing it to Ubiquitous but for some reason it doesn't like it...

Anyways, this is my most successful team on the UU ladder. Being a lurker on Youtube, like the rest of the community i've been fascinated by battles where things like Magikarp and Weedle sweep whole teams. However, I'm also fascinated with winning. So, I tried to get the best of both worlds by making a team where NFEs are the stars of the show. And not generic, overused Eviolite walls like Chansey and Dusclops. No, I wanted some rarer, but still very effective, NFEs. The best way to do this, for me, was the Field Effect Trick Room, which I've been a fan of due to it letting some of my favourite Pokemon sweep (Seviper, Marowak). So, here we go!

TEAM AT A GLANCE

Team Building Process

I started with my favourite NFE... ever. Zweilous, the monster that surpasses the over-hyped power of Haxorus.

Ahhh... Duosion. Reuniclus is a bastard to deal with in OU, so i thought I'd do a UU version of his Offensive Trick Room set.

To make sure Trick Room remains up, I needed two bulky as hell walls to set it up. Specially Defensive Cresselia and Physically Defensive Slowbro were the perfect choices for this.

By this point, any good player would see that I have a serious weakness to Bug-Type moves right now. Cofagrigus was added to give me a TR user that didn't get mauled by those pests.

One more Bug resist. I needed a bit more punch, so Escavalier was added to the team to punch holes in everything. I run a fairly unorthodox set, so it can catch a few people off guard.

This team does not often produce interesting battles. They are normally very short, lasting no more than 30 turns. I play very offensively but switch up and conserve when necessary. Anyway, time for a more in depth look at the team!

IN DEPTH

N.B. This being a TR team, you can assume all Speed IVs are set to zero unless I have Hidden Power [Fighting].

Cresselia

move 1: Trick Room
move 2: Lunar Dance
move 3: Ice Beam
move 4: Psychic
nature: Sassy
item: Mental Herb
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD

Cress is the ever-reliable TR user. With Mental Herb, not even Taunt can stop her from setting up the Trick Room that is key to my team's victory. Once she's done his job, she can restore a battered team member and give them a shot at redemption with her Lunar Dance. This backup plan means there is a larger room for error, for example if I lock Zweilous into Outrage too early and he gets statused. I maxed Special Defense because Slowbro covers the Physical side with his huge Defense, so Cress compliments him nicely. He also counters offensive Zapdos with Ice Beam, who otherwise is a huge threat once Trick Room runs out. Psychic is there just as a mandatory STAB move.

080.gif

Slowbro

move 1: Trick Room
move 2: Scald
move 3: Flamethrower
move 4: Slack Off
ability: Regenerator
nature: Relaxed
item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

Derpbro is the Yang to Cress' Yin. I normally end up leading with him due to the amount of Physically orientated leads in UU. Trick Room and Slack Off are a given, as is Scald. Flamethrower, however, is there to hurt Bug-Types, particularly Escavalier, who could otherwise run through the team. A lot of people will expect Ice Beam or a status move, so some surprise value is pretty cool. Max Defense is to wall almost the whole Physical side of the metagame. Regenerator was such a boon to Bro, as it allows him to get HP back without Slacking Off, ensuring I waste as few turns of TR as possible healing.

634.gif

Zweilous

move 1: Outrage
move 2: Fire Fang
move 3: Crunch
move 4: Toxic
nature: Brave
item: Choice Band
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def

Zweilous is not playing games. With its Hustle Ability and max attack, Zweilous hits over 440 Attack. That's some serious shit. More powerful than Adamant Max Attack Haxorus. Add Choice Band and a 120 base power STAB attack and you have something that is quite capable of tearing stuff apart (If you don't believe me, i've posted some logs of him smashing stuff at the end). He is not frail either, and has some nice resists, so switching him in isn't hard. Outrage is really the only move I use. Hit that button and watch stuff being ripped to shreds. I've had people try so many things to stop this guy... one guy switched in a Rhyperior, only to take 79% from Outrage. Another switched in Staraptor to Intimidate him, only to get OHKOed without Stealth Rock. He OHKOed a Milotic, the premier bulky water of UU, without any prior damage. And a Chansey. And a Blastoise. The list goes on. Even Empoleon got 2HKOed. "It's not very effective"? Pah, doesn't matter.

578.gif

Duosion

move 1: Trick Room
move 2: Psyshock
move 3: Shadow Ball
move 4: Hidden Power [Fighting]
nature: Quiet
ability: Magic Guard
item: Eviolite
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA

Offensive Trick Room Reuniclus... in UU. Duosion actually has the same Base 125 Special attack Stat as Reuniclus, so he's just as powerful; the only cons are that you are forced to run Eviolite and not Life Orb / Lefties. Duosion can absorb any status not called Sleep for the team, and is a scary offensive presence, with good coverage. Eviolite means he can take some heavy hits too, and with Magic Guard, which means no passive damage, he is not easily worn down. Strong attacks will do a lot of damage, but unless they are boosted and STAB or super effective, they usually won't OHKO.

563.gif

Cofagrigus

move 1: Trick Room
move 2: Nasty Plot
move 3: Shadow Ball
move 4: Hidden Power [Fighting]
nature: Quiet
item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD

Ok, seriously, people keep using Toxic on this guy. I don't even care. Cofagrigus is not designed to be my wall, he's designed to sweep people. With his insane bulk, he can often get up a Nasty Plot or two and rip through a few team members. Ghost / Fighting coverage is cool to have. Cofagrigus was only really put onto the team to give me a Trick Room user that resists Bug, but he turned out to be a very, very valuable team member.

589.gif

Escavalier

move 1: Substitute
move 2: Swords Dance
move 3: Megahorn
move 4: Iron Head
ability: Swarm
nature: Brave
item: Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def

If only he got Gyro Ball... damn you Troll Freak. Anyway, Escavalier, was, as much as I hate to say it, an afterthought, as I needed another hard hitter that resisted Bug. However, while he doesn't always pull his weight, he can sometimes destroy a lot of foes before going down. I can just imagine my opponent's faces as they hit Will-o-Wisp... and then face an Escavalier with a Substitute in front of them. I can then ram them as hard as I can, or Swords Dance to do even more damage. He is the main team member I'm looking to replace, as he's a bit hit and miss in his usefulness.

So, please give some feedback!

This is a great TR team. I run a very similar OU variant of this team to great success. Duosion NEEDS Recover, as even with max HP EVs its still going to be tiring out fast. Shadow Ball's coverage feels wasted as you have both Cofagrigus and Zweilous having greater capacity to make use of it, making it a viable option to replace with Recover. Toxic on Zweilous is also a little iffy as it becomes locked in upon use. Zweilous learns Head Smash via Egg Move and increases your coverage tremendously, allowing you to have access to a 150bp Rock attack backed by all that tremendous power. Other than that great job and good luck!

Thanks for the rate.

Duosion - Ok I will try out Recover. I did find Duosion dying a bit too fast.

Zweilous - I would have put Head Smash on there, however Fire Fang is also an Egg move and so both of them on the same set is illegal. I chose to prioritize hitting Steel-Types super effectively. Toxic is situational but Zweilous really doesn't have all that many options... I just stuck it there. Just because.

Why do you have Toxic on zweilous? I can't think of a better replacement other than something like dragon pulse, just so you would have an attack on the special side as well.

Ah the good ol zweilous CB hustle outrage set (wow that's a mouthful). Did you get this set from someone named either Archeops the raptor or Zweilous the hydra? Cause if you did, then that was me. :) It's pretty useful isn't it?

A few unique team members. Very strong. Couldn't this team be put in RU, however? If it could, it would go #1 for a long, long time.
95/100

Maybe you should try out Hariyama in place of escavalier. Hariyama has good bulk, and good offense so I suggest you try him out.

No, it was actually from a Youtuber called MudQuaza, but good to see another person who thinks its awesome. People underestimate it, hey?

I think I will try this team in RU. I'll swap the EVs on Cress to make it Physically Bulky and swap Slowbro for Slowking. I might actually make Slowking a TR Nasty Plotter like Cofagrigus and make them a sweeping duo. Then i'll add Hariyama over Escavalier, still covering my Dark type weakness. Thanks for the suggestions guys!

In Ru, I tested this team, and choice specs tinted lens yanmega, runs through this team in 1 or 2 hits, except for cofag which i think is 2-3, You need a yanmega counter.

As far as countering Yanmega, should you be playing dream world both Buffolant and Abomasnow get soundproof, giving them immunity to Yanmega's Bub Buzz. As their dream world abilities have not yet been released they are not currently usable, however, Exploud can currently use soundproof in conjunction with low enough speed to be an effective trick room abuser.

Edit: Bastiodon gets Sound Proof as an unreleased Dream World ability as well.
