Wifi Battle Tower: A Battle Tower that can beat you without DT/OHKOs

I have noticed on IRC that while nearly everyone has spent some time in the normal, offline Battle Tower, very few people are actually playing with the Wifi Battle Tower, which at least IMO is infinitely more fun.

As we've all become aware the main way the Battle Tower will beat you is luck - Double Team being the main one, OHKOs being another, as well as crits and misses and that sort of thing. It seems as though the offline Battle Tower is based on the premise that since there are 100 trainers until the trainer card upgrade/gold trophy, that if luck is a factor in enough situations that sooner or later it will catch up with you. I enjoy the offline Battle Tower as I'm sure many of you do, but I tend to prefer a little less luck in my Pokemon.

And in many ways, the Wifi Tower offers that. For those of you who are unfamiliar with how the Wifi Battle Tower works, you progress up ten ranks, gaining a new rank every time you win, and losing a rank after an amount of losses I'm not completely certain of. The nice thing here of course is that even though the difficult for each set of seven is much higher than the offline Battle Tower, at worst it sets you back one set of seven, and often will only make you start that set of seven over again. The teams you face, as Wifi would imply, are those of other trainers who have challenged the Wifi Battle Tower, with the more difficult teams coming at the end.

This is a pretty great mode of battle, IMO. As much as I enjoy fighting pokemon that magically dodge Thunderbolts 6 times in a row while Double Teaming up, I much prefer the nice slugfists with other good pokemon normally based around something other than luck that the wifi tower offers. I've run into a lot of our 'standards' in the tower, and quite a few sets that really interested me, at least for the battle tower.

I personally keep dipping around rank 3-4, none of the pokemon I have deal with Metagross very well so he very frequently ends up spelling my doom, I am debating on throwing one of the more defensive water pokemon on my team somewhere to deal with that a bit better. I am also noticing an irritating amount of Focus Sashes, possibly enough to warrant me bringing Tyranitar back on the team...

So anyway, getting to the 'point', what has everyone else though about the Wifi Tower? Any particular strategeries you would suggest?

I love Wi-Fi tower, personally. I've seen some absolutely hilarious stuff in there as well as some very good things. I've been using Specs Latios/Selfdestruct Snorlax/Band Garchomp and managed to get to rank 3, but I'm stalling now. I keep getting screwed over by Focus Sash users or the dreaded Yache Berry Garchomps/Dragonites that just barely survive.

The thing is a complete challenge, and the AI seems intelligent enough to use some sets the way they were meant to be played. I saw the AI Protect turn 1 with an Ursaring to activate Toxic Orb. There is no way that the ADV AI would have done something like that. Also, my Latios was beaten soundly by a Protect, Swords Dance @Focus Sash Ninjask. I barely ended up winning that battle.

Also of note is the difference between American teams and Japanese teams. The Japanese teams seem to use more 'finesse' if that is the word for it, and use all sorts of things like the resistance berries, focus sash, and some more unused Pokemon effectively. American teams are brute force, like the Latias/Garchomp/Weavile team I battled.

I'm learning a lot about average damages via Wi-Fi Tower, such as Life Orb Aerodactyl's Stone Edge, even when not CHing, hurts like fuck.

I am interested in trying my original BT team against this not-haxingness. Maybe I'll play this later and try both my teams out. 8)

I'm tired of getting beaten by legendary teams at the 7th round. Just got pwned by a Latios & Latias team, after outrunning a lot of Infernapes, Azelfs and Garchomps with my Staraptor.

I tried it today for the first time. It was pretty fun, though I battled the same trainer 3 times in a row>_>

Hm.. sounds fun. Of course, I'll stick to the in-game offline version until I actually get some good IV'd EV trained pokes. My onyl question is does this give BP? I know I'm going to need a lot of BP for all the EQ's and Stone Edges my Gyarados and co will be learning.

Yes, I battled it 2 times and I got 3 BP each time. Don't know if it increases like the offline one.

Got to the 7th battle, barely beating out some upper tier pokes in the 6th, only to get RUINED by a good old starmie >_<

Granted, the only thing I have that's ev trained is my Dragonite...

Hang on, massive noob question here. What's going on in this WiFi battle tower? Am I fighting the computer of other people? It seems like other people, and yet it somehow doesn't. Pardon my ignorance.

It's other peoples team's controlled by the AI. Basically when a team plays their team is uploaded onto the system, and you're battling those teams who are then controlled by a computer.

My question though is more can computers actually do any sort of decent tactics now? E.g. If I have an Endrev Lucario will they actually bother to Endure --> Reversal.

I think it's a cool option to have. It lets you know what kind of teams are being used by real people.

Couldn't they have just used the ranking system for the normal, offline Battle Tower? I honestly don't mind Double Team and OHKO moves if I'm, say, battling a friend for best-2-out-of-3. In those cases, the luck usually balances out. But when one loss spells your doom, it's obscene not to have some sort of continues to use, or at least a less harsh penalty for losing.

Lati@s are allow, wobboffet too. However, this thing generally kills everything:

Weavile @ focus sash
Pressure

Jolly

Ice Shard
Brick Break
Night Slash
Sword Dance

No sleep clause = hypnosis crobat bait, I'm currently rank 9.

Breloom is slow though, it's likely it gets killed before it wipes out three Pokemon. I suppose Substitute and Toxic Orb recovery can help that. Or just use both Crobat and Breloom. :]

Yeah WiFi BT is really cool, where I also stopped at rank 3 or 4 since i have exams now. But like skarm said, it is a really nice way to get your numbers right in damage factors.

Will try soon again with a new team of mine =]

BTW: if you see a Balrog Salamence combined with Berserker Heracross anywhere - thats mine =]

My onyl question is does this give BP?

The Wi-Fi Battle Tower gives BP. The amount depends on which rank you are on:

Rank 1 - 3
Rank 2 - 4
Rank 3 - 5
Rank 4 - 6
Rank 5 - 7
Rank 6 - 8
Rank 7 - 9
Rank 8 - 10
Rank 9 - 10
Rank 10 - 10

Unless you have a team that can slaughter the Rank 8+ teams, it's not that great a source of BP since you'll lose quite often and 1 loss at Rank 9 or 10 immediately drops you by one Rank. You get 2 losses before dropping a rank for Rank 7 and 8.

In my experience the most common Pokemon in all ranks except one are Garchomp and Metagross. Garchomp tends to carry Yache Berry at lower ranks and Choice Scarf in higher ranks. Jolly IV31 Spd 252 Spd EV Scarf Outrage Garchomp can really rip apart your team. Metagross almost always carries Lum Berry. They almost always carry Bullet Punch, Meteor Mash and Earthquake.

Other common Pokemon are Milotic, Suicune, Gengar, Weavile, Tyranitar, Bronzong, Infernape, Togekiss, Yanmega, Breloom, Azelf, Machamp. Weavile and Gengar almost exclusivly uses Focus Sash. Just about every Pokemon that can learn a Quick Attack like move, will have one.

I found that choice specs hydro pump starmie works pretty well in the beginning. With ttar as starter, you won't have to worry about most focus sashers.

Any better ideas?

so use DDTar with Aerial Ace, Bronzong, and a cleaner? DDTar destroys Focus Strippers, Bronzong resists Garchomp and Metagross. Cleaner would probably be BoltBeam Starmie with recover.

Yay, the site's finally back up! I've never heard of the Wifi BT, and this looks awesome. I building my standard team but I've never battled competitively without Netbattle before, so I just gotta say I"M VERY EXCITE!

Actually, I thouhgt of a better team. Jumpman's Bulky Gyarados with Ice Fang/EQ/Taunt/DD. Waterfall can replace Taunt if Status and such are rare. Life Orb Electivire with TP or TB/IP/EQ/CC, HP Grass if Swampert is common. The last pokemon should have a Quick Attack like move. Metagross and Weavile work. Gyarados will have Lefties so CB is a good option for the last pokemon.

Also, random thought, does Smogon have one of those group things, see News Tower in Jubiliffe.

O.o...that's really weird; the first two parts of my BT team is a perfect-IVed Gyarados, and my recently trained Electvire (always use TB, never TP).

I use a trick (meaning a surprise, not the move) moveset with Blissey as my third, but I know that's not the best. I've had some fun with a Focus Sash Scemeing Azelf as well.

Someone should run a Wob/BD poke team since wob is allowed.
