Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
It is finished. After months of hard work, we finally know who stands alone as the greatest of them all.
I'm talking, of course, about the Most Valuable Pokemon competition! Check out all the data here. After 24,101 appearances across thousands of games, we finally have an answer for who contributed most to the teams' success (or at least an excuse to pretend that random variations have significance). As a reminder, the scores are based on the probability that a Pokemon could receive a similarly impressive record through random chance. For example, a score of 95 means there's only a 5% chance to get an equal or better record through coinflips.
The scores are adjusted to account for the fact that the average win rate is not actually 50%. It's common for winning players to finish the game without revealing the whole team, while losing players will usually reveal everyone unless there is a very early forfeit. Since we only have the data from revealed Pokemon, there are more losers than winners, and the win rate is dragged down to about 48%. The "Adjusted" column takes this into account to give a more accurate score, resulting in a very even distribution across the entire spectrum.
The top ten Pokemon of the 2024 World Cup of Random Battles are:
Some other notable trends - the most popular Pokemon were Arceus (55-75) with 130 appearances, Tauros (56-56) with 112, Gengar (61-45) with 106, and Jolteon (52-52) with 104. At the other end, Obstagoon (1-0) only appeared one time, while Thievul (0-2), Grapploct (0-2), and Dracozolt (1-1) appeared twice. Obstagoon was also the only Pokemon in the competition to finish undefeated, while Thievul and Grapploct were joined by Spearow (0-5) as the only Pokemon without a win. The leader in overall wins was Gengar at 61, a substantial lead despite not having the most appearances. In terms of win differential, Swampert still led the field at +18 (32-14), with Tentacruel (43-27) and Gengar (61-45) the runners-up at +16. On the other end, Raticate (20-43), Granbull (22-45), and Ludicolo (23-46) all finished at the bottom, with -23.
I hope you found this interesting! Take a look through the full data set to see how your favorite did. No matter what country we represent, I think there's one thing we can all agree on: no one should ever have to type this many Pokemon names ever again, seriously why did I do this
Obstagoon really showed up one game, dominated, and then disappeared, never to be seen again. What a legend.
Other than that, cool to see some fun trends like Water types being 5 out of the top 7 (yes they're the most common type but this was pretty disproportionate), and Vitoran's favourite evolution line being very, very bad :( Thanks for compiling everything!
