Starting next Sunday, on November 1st, Nano will be having its National Novel Writing Month. Here's the basic scoop on it:

What: Writing one 50,000-word novel from scratch in a month's time.
Who: You! We can't do this unless we have some other people trying it as well. Let's write laughably awful yet lengthy prose together.
Why: The reasons are endless! To actively participate in one of our era's most enchanting art forms! To write without having to obsess over quality. To be able to make obscure references to passages from our novels at parties. To be able to mock real novelists who dawdle on and on, taking far longer than 30 days to produce their work.
When: You can sign up anytime to add your name to the roster and browse the forums. Writing begins November 1. To be added to the official list of winners, you must reach the 50,000-word mark by November 30 at midnight. Once your novel has been verified by our web-based team of robotic word counters, the partying begins.

So, what do you guys think? Will you be one of the many dedicated to showing off your writing? Discuss!

I'm literally debating with myself on whether to try or not. Usually I get annoyed with writing pretty quickly, but I think that it's because whenever I do, I don't get to choose what to write about. With that in mind I might give it a shot, not like I have anything to lose, maybe I'll like being able to write something I might like for once.

i've tried before but i usually end up being too disgusted with what i have written to finish it and it just makes me feel like shit all over again

looking forward to trying again though!

I might actually do this, but I'll probably end up procrastinating a lot.

Having to write 50 000 words in 30 days means about 1667 a day. quite the commitment ~_~

I've done this for the past three years, so naturally I'll be doing it this year. I've won before, but I think I'll be too busy to win again -- but it doesn't matter. Pounding out all the crap in your system really improves your writing. And it's 50,000 words. Some of it is bound to be good. Also it's fun!

1,667-2,000 words amounts to around 5-10 pages, so you're going to have to write a lot. It's definitely been worth it: over the years I've realized that it's thanks to Nano that my writing is a lot better, and that writing comes much easier.

Well if i sign up for this i would have 20 days to do it because my exams end at 11th.

On the other hand, why not?

50,000 words in 20 days means about 2500 words per day... Hmm, will probably try. Open topic right?

I did this when I was in a junior in college, but there's just not enough time in the day in grad school to do this :(

I would do this if it were over the summer or something, but I really would rather concentrate on my schoolwork. But I plan on doing this eventually, hopefully

Well I guess this started up this morning, I decided to give it a shot. Getting to choose a topic really did seem to help me want to write, which is something of a surprise knowing how I work, but I just now stopped at 2,684 words and I might do more later. It's 7:28 AM, after all, so I have the time once I finish doing things today.

I'd love to hear how other people are doing though, I hope I'm not the only one trying here, though I bet there's a few others here.

I did it last year. Unfortunately some personal issues distracted me, so I only got to about 22,000 words.

This year I'm doing it...sort of. I'm gonna try and write a computer game. Lines of code so far...zero :-S I should be coding instead of on Smogon.

Now that's a cool take on this, I wish you luck. I don't know how to code at all so I find that really interesting.

I'm proud of myself for passing the 5,000 word mark this early on, not sure if I can keep it up but at least I have some hope at the moment.

I was doing really well and on track to finish early the first week...

and then i lost my laptop charger and won't get a new one until this Tuesday so I am officially out of the running!

Oh Well!
