I don't think Smogons rule has a problem, as there are some Japanese groups have own rules( even Pokemon Underground, most popular Japanese community have using own rules ). But besides them, they also hold tournaments with official rules( of course they don't regard Wobbuffet, Latias and Latios as UBER ).

Here is the list of remarkable tournaments,
Chiba Oct. 26th
Kanagawa Jan. 17th, 18th
Okayama Jan. 18th
Tokyo Jan. 18th, 24th, 25th

I don't think that US players are necessarily "worse" than Japanese players, even at this particular rule set. I still stand by my statement that the Japanese tournament system allowed only top-tier players in, whereas there was a massive luck element for who was allowed into the US qualifier (and an increase in such luck decreases the average skill). Obviously experience has something to do with it, but that's not the whole story. It would be like pitting the Smogon Tour winners against the top 8 players in a tournament of 128 randomly selected people on Smogon.

Major QFT.

Any news from this past weekend? On a side note, the Japanese website is starting to post pictures/etc about the winners. So far I can only get the junior winners to show up.

so interesting..
It's a pity that only the 1st of each prefecture can participate in 2nd stage.

Still looking like random Pokes strung together for the most part at a glance. The 2nd place Chiba Trick Room one is cool, especially since it uses Sunny Day!

I've been slacking but I'll get those videos of last weeks tourney up soon and try to get the most recent one somehow.

Thanks for the updates micuat, but the video doesn't show any animations so I have no clue what is going on :(.

I can't wait for this tournament! The new addition of Platinum tutor moves, and now that TRUDragonite, Heatran, and Regigigas are now fair game, is sure to spark new strategies in the competitive double battling community. I'll be sure to keep checking back for new strategies, updates, etc.

Is this really an "offical nintendo" tournament? Why double battles? Thats a whole different metagame to the conventional style, meaning if your used to single then you'll have to learn a whole new metagame.

Well, seeing as how Nintendo owns Pokemon, if they want to do doubles, we get to do doubles.

So its actually hosted by Nintendo?Singles would reflect a persons playing ability better. Why cant we have a real world tournament? Like the best from every country, instead of Japan and US? Pokes is VERY popular and successful here in Australia.

@typeGSiR = in America, yes. So it actually has to be released in order for the tournaments to start, lol. I'm guessing late spring/early summer will start the USA parts.

@ninjadead = Why are you so against doubles? If you aren't, it certainly sounds that way. Single battles don't represent someone's ability better than doubles just because it's a different style or more 'original'. So if I was terrible at singles but the best trainer in the nation in doubles, I would have no ability in Pokemon battling? No, that would be stupid.

Of course if someone has been playing singles for a long time and hasn't played doubles they will have a bit of a hard time when they try a double battle. But really, if one is serious about being competitive in these tournaments they will learn the rules and nuances of double battles. That's what some people did when JAA rolled around, and even still at Showdown last year. I know my own knowledge of doubles has risen dramatically since JAA because I wanted to win stops like JAA/Showdown/etc. So I hunkered down and learned doubles and how to play. It just takes some time and dedication.

Actually we don't know for sure that Australia is out of the loop. Heck, to be honest we don't even know "officially" that the USA is getting tournament stops. so I would wait and see what happens before people start complaining about this or that. Pokemon USA, who is running it in the USA, hasn't announced the stops for anywhere yet. So just be patient and wait and see what happens.

I dont hate doubles, I like playing it, but I just dont see why it has to be doubles for an offical international tournament. As a side note, what levels was it last time around(I assume its the same this time)?

The main reason it's doubles, imo, is because it's a lot quicker to play than singles. I mean, a full 6vs6 battle can easily last an hour or more, depending on the teams. Even with 3vs3, it can linger on and lead to stalling. With doubles, you have 2 Pokemon usually attacking another 2, meaning battles can end much quicker, and (from a conspiracy point), since we're all used to singles, doubles is our main weakness.

We had a tournament here in Australia last year, rules were 3v3 level 50's and they had rules regarding time limits. Out of 128 people the tournament went quick.

i do believe that PUI stated to the staff at worlds 2008 that there will be more qualifyers. i dont know if that was ment more US qualifyers, or more around the globe.

The 2008 Showdown was anounced in May, i am guessing that we should hear offical word around that time, and Platinum should be out around Feb.

EDIT:
The rules where Doubles,4 pokemon,level 50 or under (NOT 50 all),item clause,Same Pokemon Clause,no soul dew.

I hope they dont do that stupid quiz they made you guys do to qulify.Do you mean they cant be greater that lvl 50 combined?
