Japanese to English Pokémon Dictionary

Hi, I've been working on this for awhile, and it's still a WIP. I hope to get most of the other stuff up soon but I wanted to post this since I'm a bit tired. For those who will be playing in Japanese but don't understand it, this is a resource for move, nature, item, etc. term translations. Hopefully it can be of help. The terms are based off the 4th gen and I'm going to be adding in 5th gen stuff ASAP.

Note on Japanese Characters

あア

If those characters are displaying as anything other than
(that's an image, btw), something is up with your computer/browser's display of Unicode Japanese characters. I'm not tech support so you'll have to look into it yourself, since you can't use this list effectively without Japanese support. Here is a basic page on it, and good luck.

When the games are available, you'll be on your own for the rest until I finish the game and get the time to add them or somebody else edits them in, sorry!

Identifying a Move

There are plenty of circumstances in which you will want to identify a move. To see what's attacking you, to see what you're teaching, to work out which move is which when you select it. If you don't recognise Japanese characters then it can be a little bit difficult, so I wrote this guide to assist you. If you recognise and can type hiragana / katakana, you can use your computer's find function (Ctrl+F, etc.) to quickly scroll through the list.

The first step, when identifying a move, is obviously to check its type where applicable. It’s generally fairly obvious. In the 4th gen, they are identified by little icons like this:

In battle you might not have that available, but try to think using the clues the game gives you. If you have battling animations on then it might give you a bit of a hint as to what type of attack it is. If you are up against an Electric-type like Emonga, then you can probably guess as to what moves it will have, and if it hits your Mijumaru super effectively, it's likely an Electric-type move. You can also use hints like PP, damage, and special/physical type, though those may change in BW.

Here is an example image from Pokémon Diamond.

We know it's Normal and has 35 PP. You probably don't know all of those moves' PP off by heart but you can look in the Normal list and you will probably work out that it is ひっかく, which is Scratch.

Wi-Fi Guide

Wi-Fi with Your Friends

Like in the 4th Gen, there's a Pal Pad. In the Japanese version, it is called the ともだちてちょう. Open your Key Items and find that. It has the same icon as the 4th Gen.

It's used the same way as in the 4th gen, too.

1. Look at your friends list
2. Register a friend code
3. Your friend code

You get your friend code in the Pokémon Center automatically after connecting to Wi-Fi for the first time via the middle lady.

Globe

This is like the globe in the 4th gen GTS. It's for setting your local area.

1. See a summary
2. Register (as in your location)
3. Cancel

Left lady

1. Random match
2. GTS
3. Battle video
4. Hear an explanation
5. Cancel

1.1.1-5 Single/Double/Triple/Rotation/Shooter Battle

1. Decide (then it asks you to save the game)
2. Hear rules
3. Cancel

2. GTS

1. GTS
2. GTS negotiation
3. Hear an explanation
4. Cancel

2.1 GTS

1. Exchange (then it asks you to save the game)
2. Hear an explanation
3. Cancel

2.2 GTS Negotiation

1. Initiate negotiation (then it asks you to save the game
2. Hear an explanation
3. Cancel

NB: I have no idea what this is yet, since I can't Wi-Fi right now

3. Battle Video

I assume this is like the function of the VS Recorder.

1. Watch (then it asks you to save the game)
2. Hear an explanation
3. Cancel

Middle lady

1. Go to the Wi-Fi Club
2. Hear an explanation
3. Cancel

2. Battle Rules: Unrestricted
3. Miracle Shooter: On

5. Cancel

3.2 Battle Rules

1. Unrestricted
2. Flat Rules
3. Cancel

3.3 Miracle Shooter

1. Miracle Shooter On
2. Miracle Shooter Off
3. Cancel

A Note on Rules

Unrestricted is unrestricted, duh. There is no lv. 100 mode. You will have to level up your Pokémon by yourself.

Flat rules, single, you pick 3 of your Pokémon to use and they are set to lv. 50. 'Special Pokémon' (banned legendaries, I assume) and multiples of Pokémon / items aren't allowed (i.e. species clause and item clause are on). Miracle Shooter is on. In doubles, you can bring 4 Pokémon. Triples, you can bring 6. Rotation, you can bring 4.

Thank you so much for all of this hard work jumpluff! This will make it much easier/enjoyable when my game gets here next week

Yes thank you too!

I hate to even SUGGEST anything at all, because this is going to be so ubberifically useful as is right now, but when more sprites get ripped it really would be helpful to have like sprites matched up with Japanese text (like for items especially) just for an added way to identify everything in our Japanese games. I understand that we have barely any sprites ATM though.

And thanks so much again!

Oh thank god now smogon is going to be my one stop shop for translations (ok maybe not but it will cut a LOT of work). Usually I have quite a few tabs open haha. Thanks a bunch!

Mサンキ is translation for MSankey just though I would let you guys know if you're having trouble naming your trainer

This is an awesome thread, precisely what japanese-illiterates are looking for. And yeah, sprites would be great, but the translations are already immensely useful.

I'll definitely spread this thread around.

My suggestion would be a small section that solves any problems people are commonly getting, such as plot or quest points that are only referred to by text and are hard to guess or work out. If the game is simple this might not even be needed.

This thread is awesome. Yep, I should have ordered the japanese games.

And isn't Gym Leaders a trainer class? xD

Great to have this so soon, having standard in place will really help when we start working on analyses. One point, is じりょく actually Magnet Pull not Magnetism? I can't find Magnet Pull elsewhere on the list, and that seems like the best candidate.

Thanks a ton for all this info Jumpluff! I lost all of my links from back when DP were released and even then I had to consolidate them all myself! Im definitely bookmarking and saving this page!
