Just choose SynIRC from the dropdown list of networks
For the PC program most of us use that allows you to customize, save logs, etc: http://www.mirc.com/get.html
Download it, open it, blah blah, type /server irc.synirc.net then connect to it, then join #MUDS

to potential mentors:
we definitely have enough P1/P2 beginners so if you would like to mentor a faction (or wolf even but the 5 factions [spoilers] come first) contact us and we can assign you to one so you can help them out. you can also sub in on that faction if one of their members goes idle i suppose, though of course less experienced subs will come first.

Both are free. mIRC will ask you to pay, but you don't have to; it has more options and can save logs of conversations. Mibbit is simpler but has less options. SynIRC is the network that #MUDS is on. Mibbit and mIRC are the clients. If you still don't understand any of this then I think you're better off using Mibbit.

As for mIRC, Smogon already has a tutorial for mIRC, Colloquy (if you're on a mac), and X-Chat.
