CAP ASB Adventure Battles General Thread

Taking Chinchou111 and acidphoenix

I know that you two have the profiles for your trainers and pokemon posted already, But I need to know what items your trainers will be using (You are not allowed to equip trainers once the thread it up). I am assuming its rusty daggers for the two of you, but I still need you to PM me your Trainers and Pokemon, equipped with everything you wanted equipped.

Quick Hotfix: Those wishing to become AB referees will be limited to reffing one AB until they have completed that one AB and are approved by the staff. Not that I mind Glacier taking all of these, given we're a wee bit shortstaffed at the moment.

Well, the beta test of Glass Pyramid ended before it even started. LOOKS LIKE WE GOTTA DO IT AGAIN~

Due to the fact that he was the only one who actually posted, Maxim has a priority slot for this test. If he does not claim it within four days, his slot is up for grabs.

Jesus Christ this line is short
Glass Pyramid: Chapter 1 (Beta test, Maxim(?) + ???, Reffed by Wanderer)

An Announcement:

Due to a few problems I've seen so far with the Adventure Battles, I wanted to codify a few things.

  1. There has been a consistent problem with referees (admittedly, a lot of times at the behest of myself), adding locations to the Shrine of Ruin Side Quest. Yes these places are in the game, but it tends to cause a lot of confusion and headache. So from now on, if the player tries to go somewhere not explicitly listed in the blueprint, then, for the purposes of that Adventure, IT DOES NOT EXIST. Referees currently reffing off the cuff areas can continue, but are encouraged to move their players along as fast as reasonable.
  2. Just to clarify the above point, I don't have a problem with small changes to the script that add flavor to the mix (one example being IAR's current fangirl problem). However, these do need to be kept to a "nuisance" level and below. If you throw a maxxed Gyarados at the party for "flavor reasons", you're doing it wrong.
  3. I'm...honestly a little annoyed that I even have to put this down. Basically, every mechanic in this role play should match your average competitive ASB match, with the usual caveats for arenas and such. Unless the player specifically states that they are doing something unusual with a move DO NOT try to interpret the result. This is because it can become easy for the ref to artificially add challenge where there isn't any by making players unwittingly screw themselves over. Do not let me catch you guys doing this.
  4. Exploration Tokens/Adventure Counters have been renamed to Adventure Tokens! This is mostly to avoid confusion with Ability Counters when abbreviated
As the day goes by I'll make some more changes to the thread, but these are my updates so far. These apply to all current and future ABs where applicable.

EDIT:

Quoting the sections that pertain to the above

Maxim said:
Flavor is King:
Adventure Battles are a flavor-focused roleplay, and because of that, we look for our referees to have very good flavor. They should be creative, and be able to think outside the box whenever a player comes up with a creative solution for a problem. For this reason, we look for the following qualities for our referees.
  • Post on Time: Adventure Battles take a very long time, and the last thing anyone needs is to wait even longer because of the referee. Post within DQ time and you will be set.
  • Have a Proven Record for Flavor: Again, we take flavor seriously around here, so you need to have some record of reffing other ASB matches with flavor. Sending the Admin examples of your refffing history with flavor is a good idea!
  • Be a Competent Referee: This is self-explanatory. A good ref gets calculations correct and has an easy to read format for the calculations and statuses.
If you want to sign up for reffing, either contact the Admin on ASB on IRC or by PM.

ASB Rule:
Despite the fact that this is a flavor-centric role play, it is at it's essence an ASB roleplay. Because of this, all actions are to be taken as though they were in a serious match, unless the player states otherwise. What this means is that all mechanics default to their regular ASB status unless the players specifically state a flavor mechanic. For instance, Surf will still hit people in Dive, but Thunderbolt will not. However, if the player has a Pokemon that can go underwater and use Thunderbolt on him AND the player wants them to dive after the pokemon, that may work, depending on the referee's opinion.

Off the Rails:
Sometimes, the players will want to go to a place that outside the boundaries of the Adventure Battle. This is normal, and if a creator is diligent enough, they can sometimes plan for these. For unplanned escapades though, this needs to be curtailed. Yes this is a flavor focused role play, but if the referees are having to make things up, this can lead to a larger challenge than intended. For this reason, referees are required to keep the players in the defined boundaries of the Adventure Battle, even if they have to make up stuff to keep them out.

Important: Anytime a Post is made where a boundary has been hit, the referee is REQUIRED to post the word "OUT OF BOUNDS" in the flavor section to signify to the player that they cannot go this way. This helps to differentiate between a roadblock that the players are supposed to get past with ones they are not.

5. Player Payment Codified.

Maxim said:
Tiers and Rewards:
Every time an Adventure Battle is approved, it will be given one of four Tiers, based on the difficulty and the position of the chapter relative to the others. Typically, for an Eight Chapter Adventure Battle, Chapters 1 and 2 will be Tier 1, 3 and 4 will be Tier 2, 5 and 6 will be Tier 3, and 7 and 8 will be Tier 4. This tiering system mimics the system for items, and creators are encouraged to prepare their chapters accordingly.

With this in mind, the rewards that players will earn from Adventure Battles are:
  • 1 Evolution Counter per fight, if applicable (fight being defined as any confrontation where players or NPCs receive damage)
  • 2/3 Move Counters per fight
  • 1 Ability Counter per fight, if applicable
  • (5 X Tier of Adventure Battle) Currency Counters upon victory
  • 5 Currency Counters upon loss, or upon partner getting disqualified
  • (5 X Tier of Adventure Battle) Adventure Counters upon victory
  • 1 Adventure Counter upon loss, or upon partner getting disqualified
Note that Heroism Badges and Legendary Relics can only be obtained from bonus activities in Adventure Battles (typically, beating an optional boss).

Note that all current AB's are Tier 1.

EDIT 2:

6. Added some notes about combinations

Maxim said:
Note on Combinations:
As with the rest of ASB, Combination legality is subjective and based on what is realistic and the referee's subjectivity. Generally speaking, combination legality matches that of standard ASB. However, creators can make arenas that allow for more unusual combinations, typically as an effect that has no direct effect on the battlers.

EDIT 3:

7. Changed the rules on Disqualification. Two things, first, these changes will not apply to current battles. Second, this is done in good will, if somebody tries to abuse this system then we're moving back to a "DQ=Loss" system. You have been warned.

Maxim said:
Player DQ:

DQed players only earn 1 CC + rewards for their Pokémon for each encounter they completed before they were DQed. They forfeit any Adventure Battle specific rewards (items, Adventure Tokens, and Heroism Badges).

The player that was not disqualified has three options from this point:
  1. Forefit: This allows the trainer to get back into the queue for a new Adventure Battles. This trainer receive full rewards as described above.
  2. Go Alone: This allows the trainer to control themselves, and not their partner. Their partner is treated as though they got horrendously killed/mysteriously disappears/etc as their HP goes to 0. This is only recommended if you are inches away from killing the boss.
  3. Puppet: This allows one player to control both themselves and their partner. However, that player only obtains half the normal CC and AT.

EDIT 4: Leethoof has become a referee in training.

EDIT 5: A reminder for people reffing TDTE 1, Flash and other HMs have been codified in the third post, so make sure to check that if you haven't already.

...Okay. After some more hair pulling out I've found that I really, really need to start standardizing stuff and actually do some combat playtesting. To that end, I'm hosting the first ever EVENT BATTLE!

EVENT BATTLE 1: Adventurer Simulator (Beta)

Hello, this is the beta test for the AB Society's first Simulator. We have noticed a lot of people coming here unprepared for the insanity lying ahead. To that end, we want to help everyone by opening a simulator to test out their builds. However, we have encountered a few...bugs in the simulation. Thus we need two trainers who are willing to brave a relatively easy adventure...and possible bugs, for some rewards.

2 Players
5 Day DQ Time
2 Substitutions
10 Chills/5 Recoveries Total, 2/1 Per Adventure Phase
Referee: Maxim
Rewards Upon Success: 5 Adventure Counters (on top of regular rewards)

Notes:
-Trainers and enemies each get 2 Actions per round. Enemies will always order second, during the round (similar to raids).

-Trainers may not bring any held items. This is mostly for ease of reffing and to get a benchmark for trainer power.

-After the conclusion of this Event Battle, a guide will be set up in the referee resource to give tips and general advice for reffing.

-IMPORTANT: One unusual thing for this one is that rules can change from round to round, depending on what mechanics work and do not work. I am required to allow you to reorder if it happens mid round or something, but just so you're aware. With luck, we should be able to work out any further kinks in the combat system. This is also a good reference for referees on how they should be operating.

-Picks will operate similarly to beta tests. Basically, if you're interested, sign up and I'll choose the two best fits.

Notice: For this Event Battle ONLY, you may sign up to participate even if you currently have an ongoing challenge.
