SPOILERS! General Pokémon Anime Discussion

Hopefully this "school" thing is actually just a region-wide trip so that it ultimately doesn't affect the plot. Pikachu mimicking the Z move dance is hilarious!

No Serena? Hm.

So let's see what we can analyze:
Though before I post this, let me remind everyone: SUN AND MOON SPOILERS! There's a lot of them in this poster so don't look if you don't want to be spoiled!

Observations:
1.
Like before Ash will be adopting the clothes of the male playable character plus a new hat.
2. Team Rocket are keeping Wobbuffet and might be getting a Bewear for back breaking hugging shenanigans.
3. Mallow has a Bounsweet.
4. Sophocles has a Togedemaru.
5. Lana has a Popplio.
6. Lillie has an Alolan Vulpix.
7. Considering how close it is to Ash, he might be getting a Rowlet. And of course he's being given the Rotom Dex and a Z-Ring
8. Main Cast will include Ash, Mallow, Lana, Sophocles, Lillie, Professor Kukui, Samson Oak, and of course Team Rocket. Also Tapu Koko is involved.

Thoughts:
1.
So the premise is that Ash is going to school, though I'm going to guess they mean Trainer School. If I recall there's a Trainer School-type place near the starting village on Melemele Island and Kukui's lab, could that be where Ash is going? Of course we got to employ the game's story in somehow (unless they've completely given up following the Pokemon game's story and now want to make a slice of life/school days anime featuring Pokemon) so maybe there's a school on each island. Eitherway I'm going to guess they'll still go to each island and partake in the Island Challenge in some way.
2. Of course this becomes a bit confusing since it looks like Ash's fellow students are Trial Captains: Mallow, Sophocles, and Lana. And I think only Sophocles is from Melemele island, so unless they move around Trial Captains then each island except the mountain island is going to miss a Trial Captain (though then again maybe that was a plan, it'll just be one less Trial on each island to go through). Though this makes me wonder if Mallow, Sophocles, and Lana are Captains or could this be them training to become Captains, like how Iris hadn't becomes a Gym Leader yet in the anime when she was in the games. Also is Lillie a student or Kukui's assistant?
3. PokeRides look to be very involved.
4. So Ash is being given a Z-Ring but he didn't get a Mega Ring? I guess the writers realized "hey, maybe we should give our main protagonist the power-up item that is in the game instead of making up stuff". Or maybe they just doesn't see the Z-Ring as powerful as a Mega Ring (and even if it does have a Mega Evolution function they'll keep it just to Z-Moves in the anime). Eitherway I'm glad they're giving Ash stuff that's a major feature in the game (I didn't think I'd have to be happy kind of a no-brainer, but there ya go). Also Rotom Dex, that should be an interesting thing for the writers to play around with (aka using to tell jokes and shocking people).
5. So it looks like Nala has Popplio (unless the Starters are all Kukui's Pokemon for school use, though that would mean Ash won't be getting any of them so I doubt that) and Ash might be getting Rowlet (though odd Mallow doesn't have Rowlet which leaves Litten for Ash). Though I think that's Kiawe on the top riding Charizard I don't he'll be a student. Anyway, so what does the mean for Litten? Will it go with Ash too?
6. Ash's Face: Guys, Ash is making a stupid face because he's doing the Z-Move's wacky stance. Look at everyone else if you want to know the quality of the art.
7. Why did people think Serena was going to stick around?

So Ash/Satoshi the runner up of Kalos league is going to school? Oh well gotta learn how to train Pokemon after being a decent Pokemon trainer in XY.

Let me guess, B/W writers will be in charge of 7th Pokemon generation anime.

If it is to learn Z-moves I won't have a problem with as long as the whole thing is only the school.

I agree with others in that winning a league doesn't mean he is a Pokemon master it would be a first step for it.

I'm not feeling/seeing any Best Wishes vibes. Infact I'm not feeling any vibes as the premise is sorta of a new idea. We've have a few episodes where Ash & co. went to a class/school/Summer Camp for a few episodes but never for a full season. We have no idea how it'll be set up so how can you say you're getting any previous season vibes?

Lack of Serena, and I can't be the only one getting Best wishes vibes out of this.

You're not the only one. I'm getting those cringeworthy vibes as well.

Granted, it may be just a fake alarm, but Ash's expression alone isn't very reassuring.

Hopefully the setting will be more akin to a summer school rather than a real school. If all, that could showcase many interesting events and challenges.

The only vibe about this new series I'm getting is that its going to be geared towards a younger audience then the previous seasons, mainly due to the new premise and Ash's ridiculous Z-pose. I think this anime could be a prequel to sun and moon considering the other characters shown in the artwork, but that might be stretching it.

Losing Serena sucks and is bad move considering her general popularity in Japan (at least from what I hear). To be honest, considering the new season's radically different premise from previous seasons, I think replacing Ash should have been the way to go here. It just seems so out of character for him go to school for the entire duration of his journey in alola.

Am I the only one whose actual concern is the new art style? The lineart is definitely different and more akin to Pokemon Origins', which is honestly of no surprise given they both share the same animation team, but it seems they've got more liberty to draw stuff their own way now.

Don't know how I feel about it, it isn't better nor worse imo, just different. I guess it'll take some getting used to it.

Hmm, so the new series starts in November. So we have about 7 more episodes until XY(Z) ends. 3 of them are dedicating to finishing the Team Flare story arc so we have four extra episodes, one probably dedicate to Ash saying goodbye to the Kalos crew and one at home before setting out to Alola. Wondering what they'll do with those extra two episodes.

Also, the English Pokemon Official Youtube Channel has started posting the Pokemon Origin episodes.

Younger audience? Pokémon is already aiming at little kids with all that lack of continuity and character growth. If that were the case, we'd go to the preschooler level where everyone is nice to each other and the closest you'd get to a villain would be somebody slightly unfriendly.

And dropping the girl for another secondary character is something they've always done, along with lobotomizing Ash and zapping Pikachu so hard that it becomes super weak. The writers probably don't even know why they're doing this and just go along with it as the usual routine.

Same here, I thought they nailed it with XYZ.

I think Ash probably has a final battle with Alain or they develop a better good-bye arc for Serena and Greninja.

Also guys, if Ash goes to school he's definitely going on a journey. This might hint at the premise of Sun and Moon. Maybe Ash is supposed to learn something on each Island.

The writers probably don't even know why they're doing this and just go along with it as the usual routine.

You know, you have made it pretty clear you hate the anime and you have the right to criticize it but you shouldn't disrespect the writing team. Those people study really hard to earn those jobs and you don't know what editorial mandates or restrictions they have to work under. You have so many criticisms of the writing but somehow omit the work it takes to plot and write scripts for a serialized show that comes out on a weekly basis, while at the same time showcasing the different species of regional Pokemon, developing the supporting cast, and working with several other writers. There are going to be errors and certain things will be rushed because that's the type of anime you're watching.

This series is frequently critiqued like it's Death Note or something. If you think writing is so easy, try it. In all likelihood there isn't anyone here that can do better.

Just remember to keep any Gen 7 anime discussion in spoiler tags please :)

I don't hold out much hope for this new series after the development Ash has shown through Kalos... He looks like a friggen derp in the artwork :(

Gen. 7 anime spoilers:
Okay, I know all we have is this poster and the line "Ash is going school", but this is actually reminding me of Super Mystery Dungeon. lol

Very short animation segments about ALL generations? Well, I'm liking that idea. Better than trying to compress ALL the Gen I 'story' into two or three OVAs.

I can't help but dislike the efforts of the show if it feels like they trample the source material into the ground and the writing is acceptable at best and a punch in the face at worst. Also, I'm not really putting the writers to blame, I know that executives and directors are much more likely to ruin a show/movie/etc.

As for 'writing better', there's no objective way of saying that a work is better than the anime, but there are fan authors trying to address the things heavily critisized in the show: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/11351431/1/Another-Road
