what if you posted what bands you like

Mostly I've been discovering my favorite old classics (Joy Division+The Cure+The Smiths), checking out all the 80's music I missed and the evolution of the post-punk genre... may not be hip enough for this thread

The Birthday Party

We've all heard of Nick Cave right? (right?) This is him when he was a noise rocker, a deathrocker, and in Australia. A cult band, we could compare it to the rawest of blues music. Cave sounds ferocious.

Several Sins from Junkyard: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL2ZcBBU8VA
Zoo-Music Girl from Prayers on Fire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDbfJJUGElw

Yura Yura Teikoku

I've recently gotten into them, exactly since I saw Love Exposure. Japanese psych rock...

Kudou Desu (Hollow Me): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fu_9Wr-ORdI

Deerhunter

Minimalism, ambient, noise, psychedelia, garage rock that somehow manages to sound happy sometimes and clinically other times. I think Microcastle/Weird Era Cont. is a modern classic and one of the great musical efforts of the past decade.

Hazel St. from Cryptograms: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oh8gHqjp4YM
Agoraphobia from Microcastle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oup-m8Hxx4Y

oh man shit guys I totally forgot about The Tragically Hip and Gord Downie and the Country of Miracles

the first one is more mainstream and the second one is a totally hip solo project

I saw the country of miracles preform live in my home town and they were brilliant and did all sorts of artsy stuff with this projector (like adding dyes and paper props to make scenes oh my god it was awesome). They did some stuff that honestly had a deep meaning that I couldn't explain because I've pretty much forgotten it all. I guess "you really should have been there". Seriously, they are so much better live SO MUCH BETTER.

Anamanaguchi

If you haven't heard of them, they are powerpop and 8-bit, the best band out there to do it. I adore them. Anyone that can use Mario Paint, Gameboys and NES in general to make music this good is incredible.

i see a lot of bands i've liked a while here, nods to foreys with all the blogbands haha... i have music from like 90% of those bands from half assed EPs on those blogs we used to follow. times new viking, gun outfit, etc. good shit.

CC got my top spot for album of 2k10, so re reppin them.

lets see...

run dmt - mellow psych folk craziness, i love the album bong voyage, and i think it got my #2 spot. if you haven't checked them out, you really should. if you like psych haha
http://www.mediafire.com/?dtjmttx5imj

earl sweatshirt - 16 year old demon from OFWGKTA, dropped a mixtape recently and it rips shit to shreds. he's like eminem, only more hardcore, meets a highschool aged Jay Z. all of OFWGKTA's music is available free on their site, peep all of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78_loMbmKJ8 <---crazy vid, maybe NSFW lol

baths - anticon glitch hop sickness. he's also a youngin, but he knows what he's doing. if you haven't listened to cerulean yet, you didn't partake in two thousand and ten. http://www.mediafire.com/?iwtgmhm0tij <--- my link :3

beat connection gets a honorable mention. surf pop "chillwave" ish shit. pretty good ep called surf noir i think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvg_Vz3gpBk

coma cinema - wonderful band. stoned alone is fantastic. short bursts of pleasure, upbeat awesomeness. i love throwin this on and kickin back at home. random song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huCAWOK7tJc

das racist - they call it joke rap, they call it whatever. this group is off the all krazy loko. its 2 rappers, ethnic of course, and they are hilarious. its funny because they are practically shitting on rap, and making good rap music at the same time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LliTqJNKJrM

kickball - not new, but they're pretty dope. emo-y math-y, but not really definable. the closest comparison i could make would be snowing, but i like k-ball much more tbh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4b9GKO96ok&feature=related

this is really just random selections from my itunes, i went down to the D's then added a few random ones lol... but i have been steady jammin 2k10 and i actually just cleared up my harddrive for 2k11, starting fresh wit my music. kept only the LOVED shit.

i hope you guys dig some of this stuf :3

oOoOO - "witch house" "rape gaze" act but they're wonderful imo. a guy does the music and he has a female vocalist, but i read somewhere that she left, which is sad because she does really make the music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_PcKdlD1Ys

bands

you've

never

heard

of

also bands everybody likes but maybe i know a bit more about them than you do PLEASE ACCEPT ME

ok since we want this to be somewhat serious the first is the the jezabels, new australian band i have listened to. female vocalist, with some pretty strange lyrics (in a convoluted love story way). the second is the naked and famous, a new zealand electro-pop band sort of like MGMT in their first album. the third is of montreal which most of you have probably heard of, they do pop music and i suggest that everybody listens to them because catchy choruses and hooklines are _not_ a bad thing. the fourth are hadouken! and i'd describe them as 'garage electronic' their music is bad objectively but the live shows are great and their music is catchy. sometimes i feel like a massive douchebag for listening to them because their music is objectively bad and they say so themselves but i try to ignore that. the last is the wombats, british indie rock trio who are making a new album this year i think. you may have heard 'let's dance to joy division' or 'moving to new york' on the radio.

My very favorite acts are The Clash, The Replacements, Arcade Fire, The Beatles, Pavement, The Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, LCD Soundsystem, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Hold Steady, Drive-By Truckers, Neutral Milk Hotel, Broken Social Scene, Television, TV On The Radio, Kanye West, Janelle Monáe, The Antlers, Old 97's, Sleater-Kinney, Public Enemy, Pixies, DJ Shadow, The Flaming Lips, Eminem, OutKast, R.E.M., Big Star, The National, Wu-Tang Clan, Mekons, Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Louis Armstrong, Ornette Coleman, Prince, and probably a few more I should mention.

Mentioning any two or three and then exlaining them is probably unnecessary considering how many of these I'm sure most of you know. Here's this, I suppose: http://www.last.fm/user/JoeyChicago

what up killah

i'm back with some new vintage shit:

MEMORYHOUSE

probably the best thing to come out of the 'chillwave' 'beachgaze' $explosion that was 2010. absolutely beautiful, haunting, melancholy -- your feet in the shore before a cold sea. expect keys and drum loops from years ep, but by the sound of their latest singles, they're incorporating more actual piano (always a good thing). denise nouvion has the voice of an angel. like drowning on a grey day, euphoria and all. live in this, guys.

bandcamp
years ep free dl (4th one down or so)
'when you sleep' mbv cover (so beautiful)

WALE

that's wah-lay. this DC killer has not one but TWO (free) mixtapes inspired by the tv show seinfeld -- ever heard of it? one of the better rappers out there right now -- this guy needs to get the recognition he deserves. as for now, he's got that raw unproven fight in him. HYPHY SHIT.

a mixtape about nothing dl
more about nothing

and, um, some of my music can be downloaded here -- a lot of it is just a result of fucking around with some friends: http://portsaintlucie.blogspot.com/

gonna go ahead and reiterate KICKBALL

nice one GTS, i had sort of forgotten about those guys. you can thank my friend matt for that (as seen in my 'i am making an album of my friend matt at parties' album featured on my profile page). seriously fun math-y pop, as you said. check out 'everything is a miracle, nothing is a miracle' if you're interested! (also, i just realized the drummer from kickball is a chick! another two m one f band hehe)

also agreeing that ODDFUTUREWOLFGANG has a lot of good shit for grabs. been vibing on domo genesis's 'rolling papers' lately.

this is a plug for THE RADIO DEPT.

catchy dreamy poppy swedish bullshit that is just absolutely adorable at times, check out heaven's on fire off clinging to a scheme, their newest album

not swedish in the vein of sigur rós but it's still definitely something to check out especially if you're big into most of the incredibly pretentious stuff that we all love here

Snowden

nice shoegazey rock from Atlanta. Far more mellow recently than on their early stuff.

Noisetrade link

Don't Really Know Me

Bullets in Madison

Beautiful and atmospheric poetic vocals with a ton of stuff to listen for in each song, most of their releases are available free on their Bandcamp now as they try to get themselves out of the internet obscurity they've been in for years

Well I'm not as musically literate as the rest of you so I can't share my bands with in depth analytical paragraphs on why I like them and their sound quality and yada yada but my favorite band:

Beirut

Dunno what it is about them but their music inspires me unlike any other band I've heard. All of their music is so brilliant and to me they have transcended beyond being just a band. They are something more. Much more.

Mount Wroclai When all the acoustics come in towards the end...it's so perfect

And my favorite of their's, Nantes
The studio version: Nantes Studio

I personally prefer listening to their live recordings since they have more depth to them and you can feel each instrument

I'm musically schizophrenic. I like Orianthi, Hollywood Undead, Arctic Monkeys, Soundgarden, Megadeth, The Sword, Lamb of God, The Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, *n*l C*nt...

I never liked Arcade Fire.

The Appleseed Cast

Everybody changes around Chris Crisci and Aaron Pillar, but it doesn't matter. They went from 90s emo band to experimental spacerock band to a space/alt-rock mix to post rock, and they've done every style very well.

Mono

Japanese post-rock, but don't let their home country worry you: every song is beautiful and layered perfectly.

Sunset Rubdown

The other band of Spencer Krug (of Wolf Parade fame), and it's honestly better. Krug has a very particularized song-writing style, you can tell which WP songs are his without vocals, and that style is on full display with this band. Love their stuff.

here are some photos i like (the music is pretty good too) (props if you bother to listen to any of this)

Foetus

made industrial music in the 80s and 90s, and has more recently been creating weird orchestral stuff with Love and Hide. his gravelly voice stays the same throughout the years though.

!Chingada!
Time Marches On

World's End Girlfriend

gorgeous post-rock mixed with IDM. his 2010 album Seven Idiots loses the post-rock feel for the most part and is just weird electronic stuff.

Scorpius Circus
DECALOGUE minus 8

Unwound

started out making kickass noise rock then made the amazing post-something Leaves Turn Inside You which is probably one of the best albums of the last decade.

Fingernails on a Chalkboard
December

Kayo Dot

"avant-garde" / progressive rock band who formed from avant-garde metal band maudlin of the Well and have consistently created brilliant albums. hard to describe though

Gemini Becoming The Tripod
A Pitcher Of Summer

THE DISMEMBERMENT PLAN

post-punk i guess? is that a thing? incredible occasionally ridiculous but always great lyrics delivered in a kind sing/speak over some of the weirdest and most discordant conmbo of bass and drums you could imagine. hang on that doesn't really sound good. kind of hard to explain but check them out!! Emergency & I is one the best albums i've ever listened to.

BOMB THE MUSIC INDUSTRY!

probably my all time favorite band and has been for years. their genre is kind of hard to pin down because their music is genre bending, i guess you could vaguely call them ska-punk? with a lot of synths and occasional piano ballads? regardless of their style, what makes btmi! great is the absolutely incredible song writing. i had so much trouble even picking a song to give as an example because there are literally close to 20 btmi! songs that have at one point or another been my favorite. seriously, i can't speak highly enough about this band. go download their music for free from their website now!!: http://quoteunquoterecords.com/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5Dypaw46fA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-i-v2zlmL8&feature=related

ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD

how could you say no to these guys?? just an acoustic guitar, an upright bass, and some of the craziest most frenzied folk-punk music you could ever want. AJJ has some of the weirdest lyrics of any band i've ever listened to, but they'll really stick in your head for a long long time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWVfCU-UVx0&feature=related

stop stealing my music taste 'laxe
You just stole three of my favourite bands (I've seen Metric live and I'm in love with Emily Haines while YYY and Arcade Fire are both awesome).

Ok, my turn. Let's go with some Canadians, shall we? First on the menus is Wintersleep, a band from Nova Scotia. The lead singer has this very unique voice that's just kinda mesmerizing at times.

Orca
Weighty Ghost
Home

If you move a little west into New Brunswick, you'll find fans of Great Big Sea and the Joel Plaskett Emergency. Both are indie bands with GBS having more of a country feel to them. The Joel Plaskett Emergency are great live, by the way.

Through & Through & Through - Joel Plaskett Emergency
Fashionable People - Joel Plaskett Emergency
When I'm Up I Can't Get Down - Great Big Sea
Ordinary Day - Great Big Sea

This should do for right now.

DILLINGER FOUR

Love their vocals and the down right pop punkiness. Every song they make is so damn catchy. Hung around the mid 90's. Good stuff

Last Communion

Will add more later. late here.

dude from the red house painters, a band which i will confess i have never listened to. :awk:
RED HOUSE PAINTERS

I, too, started out by listening to Sun Kil Moon, but RHP have slowly found their way into my heart. Their final three albums, Ocean Beach, Songs For A Blue Guitar, and Old Ramon are all very alike to Sun Kil Moon's work and quite folky (although there are places where the band tries to become the 90s version of Crazy Horse).

Their earlier albums, Down Colorful Hill, Rollercoaster, and Bridge, are more ambient and shoegaze/dream pop-ish. Personally, I find earlier Painters much more difficult to get into, although there are some gems that I can recognize here as well.

If you think Sun Kil Moon is depressing, I would wait a while before getting into the Painters.

Early Red House Painters:
Michael
Katy Song
Strawberry Hill
I didn't post anything from Bridge because I find that album the most difficult to get into and an anomaly album in the Painters discography.

Later Red House Painters:
Have You Forgotten - There are two versions; this one being just Mark and a guitar, while the one from the Vanilla Sky soundtrack is shorter and with the full band.
Smokey
Void
