What was the most prestigious tournament of smogon? and who were winners of each one?
So, this is a subjective question, and you're going to get different answers depending on who you ask. For example, different tiers may have their own answers, and different people are going to prioritize different things. I'll take a swing at answering, but others may have different thoughts.
In my mind, the most prestigious tournament on Smogon should meet a few qualifications - it should be a
trophy tournament, focus on the most popular Smogon format of current generation OU, and should be openly accessible/winnable by all. Additionally, I think a longer-running tournament should take precedent over a newer tournament. Other factors, like signup size, tournament structure, the presence of a large prize pot, or a larger range of format knowledge are not taken into consideration for me.
With those decided on:
The
Smogon Premier League has existed since 2010, and is (currently) a team tournament focusing on current gen OU and all OU tiers going back in generations to Gen 1. You can find
statistics here on who won that tour. However, it's arguable whether this tour is accessible, as folks could write novels on the nature of how to participate in it (and other team tournaments) and the limiting factors there. It's my guess that this is the tournament a plurality of tour players would name as the most prestigious tournament.
The
Smogon Tour is a formally twice-a-year tournament that has existed since 2006. It is a series of live tournaments in (currently) the three most modern OU tiers (so, SV SS SM) leading into a non-live playoffs stage where the best performing players from those live tournaments compete in a standard single-elimination bracket to crown a winner. You can find statistics on who won live tours and seasons
here.
Finally, the
Official Smogon Tournament is a current gen OU-focused tournament that has existed since 2005, and the name itself lends some idea as to why you might consider it the most prestigious. If SPL isn't the plurality answer, it might be this one. You simply have to signup and play, there is no live tour component or team tour drafting aspect that can limit players from participating. Literally anyone can win, assuming they're good enough at the game to win out over hundreds if not thousands of others. These statistics don't exist quite as much, but you can filter by
Finals here to see previous winners.
In the end, there's no one specific answer. Circuit playoffs or invitationals can be the most prestigious for tiers and for folks who don't want to prioritize the open-to-all aspect, SCL and WCOP may be prioritized for folks who see team tours as the highest form of competition, and there are plenty of tours scattered around the site with notable community-funded prize pools that I'm probably not even aware of, for folks who want to prioritize that aspect when it comes to what tours are prestigious.
If you ask me, I'd say it's OST - the longest run tournament with the most straightforward concept that recieves generally speaking the most signups. But I think you could probably write entire TFP articles on the topic and still leave most of the question unanswered/undiscussed.
