Smogon Simple Questions Thread

Anything goes is the tier where anything goes, so shouldn't there be no clauses or restrictions? if so, why is the infinite battle clause still there?

Oh, and an unrelated question, how do you get yourself an animated BW sprite of your own choice on your avatar?

To prevent battles from never ending, we don't need people maliciously abusing the ability to make battles endless.

You can set your avatar to any image you have by going to account details and uploading the image as your avatar.

Do we have a thread somewhere talking about theorymon topics? for example, what if XXX got an ability that automatically sets XXX? or what if there is a trick room extender, etc.

can anybody link me the place if it exists?

why does it show for some users they have 1 message when they clearly have many more? is this a bug or counting a different statistic? i can provide a screenshot in pm if someone wants or link to account
edit: think its just when they post on something like a thread not a wall

postcount is exclusively undeleted posts in threads, with certain forums (like sandbox) excluded - wall VMs, PMs, etc all do not contribute to postcount

Is there a place to submit potential abbreviations for pokemon showdown?
Like for example in BH, searching imp would pull up Chansey

What was the most prestigious tournament of smogon? and who were winners of each one?

So, this is a subjective question, and you're going to get different answers depending on who you ask. For example, different tiers may have their own answers, and different people are going to prioritize different things. I'll take a swing at answering, but others may have different thoughts.

In my mind, the most prestigious tournament on Smogon should meet a few qualifications - it should be a trophy tournament, focus on the most popular Smogon format of current generation OU, and should be openly accessible/winnable by all. Additionally, I think a longer-running tournament should take precedent over a newer tournament. Other factors, like signup size, tournament structure, the presence of a large prize pot, or a larger range of format knowledge are not taken into consideration for me.

With those decided on:
The Smogon Premier League has existed since 2010, and is (currently) a team tournament focusing on current gen OU and all OU tiers going back in generations to Gen 1. You can find statistics here on who won that tour. However, it's arguable whether this tour is accessible, as folks could write novels on the nature of how to participate in it (and other team tournaments) and the limiting factors there. It's my guess that this is the tournament a plurality of tour players would name as the most prestigious tournament.

The Smogon Tour is a formally twice-a-year tournament that has existed since 2006. It is a series of live tournaments in (currently) the three most modern OU tiers (so, SV SS SM) leading into a non-live playoffs stage where the best performing players from those live tournaments compete in a standard single-elimination bracket to crown a winner. You can find statistics on who won live tours and seasons here.

Finally, the Official Smogon Tournament is a current gen OU-focused tournament that has existed since 2005, and the name itself lends some idea as to why you might consider it the most prestigious. If SPL isn't the plurality answer, it might be this one. You simply have to signup and play, there is no live tour component or team tour drafting aspect that can limit players from participating. Literally anyone can win, assuming they're good enough at the game to win out over hundreds if not thousands of others. These statistics don't exist quite as much, but you can filter by Finals here to see previous winners.

In the end, there's no one specific answer. Circuit playoffs or invitationals can be the most prestigious for tiers and for folks who don't want to prioritize the open-to-all aspect, SCL and WCOP may be prioritized for folks who see team tours as the highest form of competition, and there are plenty of tours scattered around the site with notable community-funded prize pools that I'm probably not even aware of, for folks who want to prioritize that aspect when it comes to what tours are prestigious.

If you ask me, I'd say it's OST - the longest run tournament with the most straightforward concept that recieves generally speaking the most signups. But I think you could probably write entire TFP articles on the topic and still leave most of the question unanswered/undiscussed.

Who has got reqs for the most suspects on Smogon?
A few months ago this was actually researched and it was found that user Elfuseon has participated in 87 unique suspect tests to date; you can count these yourself in the Policy Review archive (it may be more now).

However, the history of suspect tests is a long and storied one, going all the way back to 2008, changing into council tiering through BW, and going back to public suspect tests in XY. You also have to consider all of the tiering suspect tests that occurred for unofficial tiers before their consistent use of the PR forum and wherever their histories may be logged. Finally, getting reqs =/= voting, so there also may be someone who has achieved more reqs but declined voting, as that really isn't logged anywhere outside of the individual reqs threads.

hi, I was just wondering how do you get permission to start a thread? I was told I needed permission from a moderator.
Send them a conversation with your idea. In most subforums you can find the list of moderators listed at the top of the relevant subforum. Click on one of them, and it will take you to their page. At the bottom of that box, before you get to visitor messages, it says start a conversation. That’s where you can send a private message detailing your thread idea.

You can add more staff to the conversation by typing their names in the small textbox at the top of the make a conversation page, below the title. It can be better to add all staff in the list, or you can just pick one.
