Post your searing hot takes

I do that's why I said the Wii/Wii U generation which includes all the other consoles around during those generations. I just didn't think to type them because i thought that people would understand. Guess I was wrong.
this was absolutely the generation of DLC, this was literally Skyrim Horse Armor days. This was buy Call of Duty map for $10, this was Battlefield online pass only included through code in the box, no trade ins to Gamestop.

also like. mario galaxy 1 and 2. kirby. two zeldas. donkey kong. mario kart. xenoblade, super paper mario, brawl and metroid prime 3

thats basically it

for gamecube we can say

wind waker
luigi's mansion
super mario sunshine
metroid prime / prime 2
fzero gx
mario kart
the thousand year door
pokemon coloseum / xd
pikmin 1 / 2
melee
star fox assault

im not even a big fan of the gamecube but its exclusive library fucks the wii in a first party lineup, the only must plays from the wii imo are galaxy, xenoblade, paper mario; twilight princess is also a gamecube game, and the rest felt like very replacable games in later gens.

also the wii u isn't the same gen. it's a different gen

As someone who wants to look more into Wii U modding, the Wii U itself kinda feels like half a generation (do I think Sm4sh and XCX were worth the price of admission? Let's put a pin in that for now...). Although I will frontload this by saying that I think the WiiU *overall* is a relatively inoffensive little device, being a 'Wii and a bit extra' (side note: you could make the argument for points in the 3DS's court because of DS backwards compatibility), and the internal hard drive limits being circumvented by external hard drives being the simplest convenience that few other consoles seem willing to replicate.

That back library though... yeesh. I'm something of a hot takes guy myself, and even I find the dirth of games kinda disturbing. XCX and Sm4sh are the only two I have played for the consoles, and I'm looking into Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101 atm (see also the potential of fan patches for the FE Ugdral (or however you spell that word) duology). Other than that, Minecraft, and maybe BotW if you're a modding buff like me... idk if there's much here that I'm desperate to jump at.

I think it's really hard to determine one single best gen because when we examine it in retrospect, it's tainted by nostalgia and seeing only the memorable outliers

That said, I think the Wii/360/PS3 was when things turned out to the worse. It's when unfinished games started becoming more and more the practice and when delivering a half product was becoming normal. The PS4 era was a better by having a more established indie scene and having more variety, but the issues that started last gen got worse. PS5 era is legit awful, we are 4 years in and nothing is happening

I think the PS1 and PS2 eras were the best

the 3DS is the greatest video game console to ever exist, and you cannot change my mind

I chock that up mostly to the library of games available - the Alolan Pokemon games being the main selling point for me (and is in the three-way tie between it and Xenoblade(s) 1 and 3 for me)
we're dealing with levels of based that shouldn't even be possible

For the record, I'm Gen Z, my first console was the Wii. I love the DS. I was a Nintendo kid and I played New Super Mario Bros Wii over and over and over. Mario Kart Wii was like my second game ever.

PS5 era is good IMO because indie is at its best, AA is at its best. Even AAA has actual variety again. People look at Concords but not Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Dragon's Dogma 2, Armored Core 6, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, and so much more that would literally not be able to exist, let alone succeed, in the 7th or early 8th gen.

AAA is at its best in decades. AA is at its best in decades. Indie is at its strongest ever. This is IMO one of the strongest gens from a software standpoint. This is the first gen where PC gaming is actually a major power even in the mainstream, so it makes sense that the gen feels lackluster on the PS5 and Series front.

Counterpoint: Elden Ring was mid, so the whole generation is bust.

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes is on the console (I've got to get around to that at some point), and I understand there are some niche JRPGs on the system as well (Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia and Skies of Arcadia come to mind).

To be fair, what elden ring lacks in being a good soulsborne game, it more than makes up for in being a game you can recommend to people who have never touched the genre. That's why elden ring got so popular; because most people with a decent amount of skill can pick it up no matter what. Personally, I never played it since soulsborne games aren't my cup of tea (Not a huge fan of the more methodical inputs since I much prefer stuff like terraria where you're focused on DPS and being able to hit the enemy with ~80% of your shots) but many people I know who come from varying backgrounds in the genre all say it is a good game.

I do appreciate that, but it also means that I have to deal with new fans who conceptualize all of From's previous games as stepping stones to Elden Ring and look at me like an alien when I say I prefer the earlier ones. It's give and take with this game.

That sounds like a problem that can be solved by separating the fanbase from the topic

i think this only fixes about half the issues with tera. forsure fairy and steel and water are very good defensive teras, and you get a lot of mileage out of even more niche teras such as tera ghost for the broken zama and dark on dondozo for kingambit. however i think you understate the damage just a stab tera can do; the recent suspect was at least 50% caused by people realizing that tera dragon outrage on gouging is incredibly busted since it both gets rid of its ground weaknesses and adds a water resistance and also allows it to brute force past things that should beat it such as garg or tusk.

i think gouging exemplifies the main strengths of same-type tera in that it adjusts weaknesses into neutralities and allows brute forcing, but its not just gouging that could abuse it. Volc, for example, sometimes ran tera bug to get rid of the problematic ground neutrality and water weakness and get past tinglu and glowking at +1. Kyurem runs tera ice on specs and some dd sets to obliterate glowking. Gambit runs dark to obliterate that one 1400s stall team that hasn't figured out they need tera dark on dozo yet, etc. etc.

And if we did ban unnatural tera, the list would only grow. For example, one thing i've been using lately is tera fairy on valiant to shed its weakness to moonblast and brave bird from various sources, allowing it to beat things like moltres and corviknight easier in conjunction with encore + coverage while also making moonblast a nuke. Tera ghost ghold does similar things with tusk and moth, tera fairy prim heals to full with draining kiss, tera dark weavile can run band semi-viably thanks to not needing boots for rocks as much, etc.

also megas and tera aren't remotely comparable purely because tera can be applied to everything. if megas were a mechanic to add +100bst to any mon, it would be different, but as it is, megas can be tiered separately because they are only specific mons.
Yeah, we don’t use Tera dark on dozo, we use Tera fighting since it boosts body press and isn’t weak to low kick.

Of the long running animated shows that are said to have fallen off, SpongeBob had the absolute hardest downfall

I'd say both the average of quality among newer episodes is lower than that of Family Guy and The Simpsons and the depths SpongeBob reaches are waaaaay more extreme than of the other two

I predict that the PS6 and Xbox 2 (or whatever the fuck they choose to call that one) will be the last consoles Sony and Microsoft make. The main draw of console gaming compared to PC is that it's much cheaper, but with each generation of those consoles getting more powerful, that of course makes them much more expensive to make, thus they have to be sold at a higher price to break even. So there is going to come a point, I think quite soon, where a good gaming PC won't be much more expensive than a console (hell in the long term it'll probably be cheaper since you can update it rather than have to get a new one), so I think more people are going to switch over.

I think Nintendo will still stay in the console race, I think they've hit a sweet spot with the Switch. They have been the kings of handheld gaming ever since the Gameboy came out in 1989.

What you've said here is basically an admission that, unless we codify Computers as 'consoles' (not an unreasonable take in and of itself), that Nintendo will largely monopolise the Console market in the foreseeable future. The problem with MS's outings and Sony's PS5 is that it's basically jerking itself off aesthetically, whilst basically selling your property rights to the Globalist woodchipper (no physical disks / online purchases are glorified rentals, that sort of thing. "You will own nothing and be happy", as it were). The concern at that point being that, given the big N will no longer have competitors in the console war (a war they would have all but won lest a plucky upstart rise from the ashes), will they still have an incentive to be one of the few 'good' companies? Or will they slunk into the same habits that it's competitors ate shit on?

There are some excellent videos on this kind of thing. That one 'Raw Razor' episode from way back when being my personal favourite when it comes to this kind of thing:

Omg I am so sick of people pretending digital is like the death of gaming or whatever

How are you criticizing console manufacturers for pushing digital. Do you realize the alternative. When is the last time you knew someone who bought a PC game physically LOL

Idk why there is this double standard in gaming where PC gaming has basically been all digital for 15 years but when console manufacturers try it, it's basically the end of the world

also btw if console manufacturers wanted to kill your digital library, there is a way easier way than the imaginary "what if sony just deletes games from your library" which would get the FTC on their ass literally 5 seconds later

its called basically every console jump lol

nintendo fucking did this! every time! the switch might be the first time in their history where a digital library is stored!

They made you buy Super Mario Bros. NES on two consoles in the same generation, despite them both using the same account system!

Consider the following: Downloading it on the PC just feels better, man.

In all seriousness, I think it comes down to company perception. Valve is mostly negligent and conceptualized by many gamers as a benevolent force, so people don't have as much anticipatory anxiety about their Steam library being rendered inaccessible overnight.
