Chicken

Recently, I've gotten into cooking. While researching how to cook different types of meat, I found that chicken is considered a bit of an anomaly in culinary literature. Apparently, chicken is either cooked, or it isn't, with no in-between. This doesn't make sense, though. After all, beef comes in all sorts of different degrees of cooked - from the Timberland boot sole-like well done to the "is this thing still alive?" blue rare. So I thought: why can't chicken?

A few hours ago, I tried to see if I could put my thoughts into practice by going to the local KFC. The artist benefits from looking at references and using them as inspiration, not by copying things directly by tracing (a nice way of saying "plagiarism"). Similarly, I believe the cook benefits from sampling the food of others to get a sense of what is acceptable and then using that as inspiration for their own creations. I had read about people complaining, for whatever reason, about various KFCs across the country serving them raw chicken, so I figured one of those would be a good starting point. Well, fortunately, I got what I wanted on my first try. I was served a burger which had chicken that looked like this on the inside:

Honestly, it... didn't taste that bad? I can see why it might put people off, but I found it OK, if not absolutely amazing. It was a bit stringy and tough, but nothing too terrible. I should also point out now that I'm almost at the end of this thread that, as I've been writing, I've gotten a mild stomach cramp, but that's nothing new for me. What do you think? Should KFC broaden its horizons a bit and start serving raw chicken on a more frequent basis? Are the people who have been complaining justified? What should I try cooking that incorporates raw chicken? I'd love to know your thoughts.

The key difference between beef and chicken lies in how bacteria are distributed in the two types of meat and the associated health risks.

  1. Bacterial distribution:
    • In beef, bacteria like E. coli are primarily found on the surface of the meat. When a steak is cooked, the surface is exposed to high temperatures, killing most bacteria, even if the interior remains rare or only partially cooked.
    • In chicken, however, bacteria like Salmonella and Campylobacter are often distributed throughout the entire meat, not just on the surface. This means that chicken must be thoroughly cooked all the way through to ensure that all harmful bacteria are killed.
  2. Risk of infection:
    • Eating raw or undercooked chicken poses a significant risk of foodborne illnesses caused by Salmonella or Campylobacter, which can lead to serious gastrointestinal issues.
    • With beef, the risk is generally lower if the outer layers of the meat have been properly heated.
For these reasons, it is safer to serve a steak that is cooked rare or medium-rare, whereas chicken always needs to be fully cooked to ensure safety

I'd love to know your thoughts.
hi aurora,

i think you need to expand your horizions a bit. look beyond kfc and to the land of the rising sun, and you will find torisashi:

unlike kfc, torisashi apparently requires a "high quality of chicken meat and hygiene in preparation" so it may be a better inspiration for your cooking endeavours. please keep me posted as i am very interested in your cooking journey.

minecraft players know that the odds of getting food poisoning from raw chicken is only 30% (for pokemon players that's the same odds as focus blast missing) so you're probably fine

You might be wondering why I haven't posted in this thread in a couple of days.

Well, a few hours after I posted this thread, I got really sick. I'm not going to go into too much detail, but it was pretty nasty. I've been trying to keep in good spirits by posting elsewhere when I can, but I could barely bring myself to look at my OP here out of sheer embarrassment. I've liked some replies, but I've made sure not to read what I wrote myself.

Now that I'm feeling a bit better, I can say with confidence that this must have been incorrectly prepared raw chicken. This amateurish effort has cost me two days of my week. Why I thought eating from KFC would be a good idea is absolutely beyond me. In fact, I think I might report the KFC I bought this from to the food safety authorities. They should have known better than to serve me in this way. I don't want to abandon my quest yet, but I definitely feel a little bit defeated here. Perhaps I should look for a food vendor that actually knows what they're doing!

girl you are gonna fucking die lmao

there are some places in the world where they eat raw chicken but even there, it causes most people that it to become sick and is therefore rarely eaten

you can't eat poultry raw because of the salmonella risk. High quality beef or pork can be eaten raw without issue but poultry has a different distribution of bacteria

seriously don't mess with this. You could die easily

Lots of poultry today are younger birds and that contributes to pink colouration even among fully cooked (and I mean consistently up to temperature) birds, so it might not be a matter of whether it's cooked. It could just be that your local KFC staff are fucking the chicken ahead of time!

Don't listen to this guy, you need to keep eating raw chicken to build up your tolerance.

It probably had less to do with the chicken's color or level of doneness and more to do with the fact that it came from a KFC. That place has been cursed by God. They could blast that shit until every iota of pink has been obliterated, and it would still give you food poisoning.

not sure if you noticed but that is a 100 000 Pokedollar offence, both because you are murdering an intelligent creature and also because it's endangered due to it's popularity as a starter
I would exercise caution and I will snitch if I catch you doing it
