Fixed the outlining and miscellaneous things. Haven't done the center hand yet though or the bottom, though I don't know if I'll change it.

Those are the male and female sprites. Male has the bigger drill on the bottom and has the abnormal circle in the big hand. I'll do a shiny pallette right now.

hey. i'm liking the sprites, Wyverii and EM. i'd say in both cases though, you should make the hands a little more defined. maybe give them harder corners. anyway, heres a sprite i made:

it was a little tough to stick to the colour limit, but i think it came out ok. the only things i'm a little worried about is that the spikes are not so easy to see, and that the upper most hand's elbow is a little lost. what do you guys think?

also, thanks to everyone who supported my lizard! i never thought i'd make it to the final round. and congrats to Cartoons, im glad you won, cause it was really fun to sprite.

Urf, it's hard to please everybody if you're giving me conflicting opinions however I will conform to what seems to be the normal Nintendo standard even though my unique style does tend to leak in (compare the sprite to the one in my avatar, similar style, no?).

Since i'm not being bothered about the poison element anymore I removed the sludge. I kept the hand though. The hand's in a balanced position and the slightly curled fingers make it look more mischievous. I'm going to keep the hands soft despite Zantimonius' advice since hard edges don't conform well to the cartoon style i'm trying to achieve (hence the puffiness).

If there are no more large objections i'd like to whip up male/female differences and shinys quickly before getting to work on the backsprite. (mental note, move back hands down so people can actually see them).

Hey, Zanti, that pose is so fun!

Your top lizard was awesome and I wish you'd drawn more of it.

Cheers!

EDIT: Wyverii, I love the hand.
If no one's seen any of your other sprited 'fakemon', it's worth a go looksee. They're so appealing and whimsical, I'd love to have seen them implemented into the game.

Wyverii, that looks excellent. I think the hand without the sludge in it looks very cool now. I can't wait to see your shiny colors.

I'm in the process of making mine now, but it's hard not to make it clash.

I'm liking Wyverii's sprite more than the others because I can clearly see the face without being cluttered together with its hands. How about making the drill a bit bigger to emphasize its Ground typing? I know I'm being a little picky... ^^; Unless you're making the size of the drill the difference between the male and female sprite, then it's perfect. =)

does anyone know how long we have to submit the sprite? I am currently working on the first arm (I've finallly finished the head, I'm somewhat of a slow spriter since I take my time).

My first shot at the shiny. The face color will be changing a lot most likely, since I like the blue. The brown-ish color may get a shade lighter.

Haha, I just realized the face color stayed almost exactly the same. >_>
I'll edit them in once I get a chance.

Okay I'm just going to post what I am currently working on (literally, I'm spriting as I 'm typing this) so you all can critique. Thanks!

I am debating between color or black outline though, and I am experiementing with different bottom spikes, thats just what I had at the time of saving

Finished front sprite set. Is it just me, or does everybody else use harsher colours than me? O-o; Ah, there's good ways to use soft and hard colouring anyway I just prefer the former. The gender differences are small. The female has a smaller drill bit (I enlarged the males) and has different coloured hand spots. 12 colours in all for each colour scheme (the sludge took up an extra colour).

Funny, I had a lot of trouble keeping the colour limit for the Pyroak but this is easy in that regard. Maybe it's because I don't have the heart to use highlights on this since it looks fine without.

Lawman, quick tip. Always have a black or near black outline for these around most of it. That's the general rule and helps make it look more "Pokemonish". It's also a good idea to sketch the whole thing out first before even thinking of colouring it or it might look disjointed and out of proportion.

Followig up with Wyverii's advice, it helps if you have a rough sketch of the pose you want. You could use one of the ones on the front page/one of the ones Absolution had, or even make one up on your own, but as long as you have something to base it on it helps it stay in proportion.

Thanks Wyverrii. I actually do have a sketch sprite, or at least half of it, but I just copied over what I had actually colored in to post. I'll work with that outline.

I like the shiny sprite, but I can see the head being blue instead of green too. It would distinguish it more from the neckband thing.

(I posted my full sketch of what I am going for already)

EDIT: Here is the sprite with the "sketch" ( I just shrunk the full sketch in paint and I've been spriting off of that):

Note to all spriters: Technically, there is no color limit for your sprites.

Since these sprites are implemented in ShoddyBattle, you can have as many colors as you want in your PNG. HOWEVER, the ingame sprites are limited to 16 colors. Therefore, if you use too many colors, it may be obvious that your sprite "doesn't look right". That could cost you votes. So it's your choice. If you want to use more than 16 colors, go right ahead. There are no rules prohibiting it. But, most spriters stay very close to that limit to avoid the sprite looking "wrong".

White counts as a colour since if it's used in the sprite white can't be the transparent colour. You should be able to cut down easily though since I only used 3 shades (light/dark/outline) for each colour barring the white drill/spikes which have no outline colour. You could probably cut out a highlight shade somewhere.

Is it just me or does my sprite look incredibly cocky? As if to say "come and get me suckers". Not sure if that's a good thing or not but at least it's got some personality. ^^

Why are back sprites so much more complicated than the front sprites?

Meh, I'm sticking with 16 colors. I'll be in trouble someday for the whole 4 shades for each color barring white/filler/black, but whatever.

Alright then. I don't think I would even need that last color anyways so I'll be fine. I should be done with my front sprite tomorrow then I will try to work on a back sprite. As soon as I finish those two the rest should be a breeze.

I have 3 main colors with 4 shades of each, as well as 4 shades for white/black/grey/some-other-grey.

Crap... Hm... what to do, what to do...

I can probably fix something with the spikes, since thats what I've been mainly using the shades of grey for. I'll fix it when I'm actuall done witht he main sprite. Thanks for pointing that out.

Oh, and how do you make it transparent?

Actually, I was going to mention that but then opted against it, unsure if I was being too nitpicky. It looks like it's making one of those Italian hand signs, which makes it look too "badass"-y and takes away from the cartooniness, just IMO. But if everyone else is OK with it then I guess that's fine.
If you take my suggestion though, I would go back to the fist or maybe some other hand sign.

OKAY HOPEFULLY THE LAST EDIT GUYS WHAT DO YOU THINK. D:

I added two more arms, which were a bitch to fit, although I quite like how they came out.

Actually, the "badass" look mostly comes from the facial features influencing how you're interpreting the signs. The hand with fingers curled slightly can be both a positive or negative gesture depending on how you interpret it. It can mean, "come over here" or it can be a gesture of giving. The face influences it towards the former because of the smirk. Still i'm fond of how I did the face so i'm not going to change it unless there are more complaints.

Changing it back to the fist would be counter productive at this point. I already deemed it to unbalanced for the pose and too aggressive. ;p (I'm sure some would agree).

Nasty Pass, I'd work on getting your proportions straight. Every hand seems to be a different size and it looks very off balance because of that.

PS. Transparency doesn't count as a colour.
