"They ran only 37% of the time last year."

And, they were 7-9 last year.

They ran 44% of the time in 2006 where they went to the NFC Championship. Talking about offense in general also says nothing about how good your defense is -- offense doesn't win games alone.

Not every team uses the WCO "in some ways." The power running game of the Vikings or the Titans are in no way a WCO. The Cowboys or last year's Patriots are passing-based but more vertical. The 2007 Eagles passed nearly 60% of the time, with a RB that figures prominantly into the passing game and a relatively low YPA indicating more short routes -- this is a WCO. This year they've thrown 57% of the time so far (almost as much as last year) and nobody's calling them a weak team. Indeed, Westbrook is a better rusher than Bush, but the team isn't based around his ability to churn out yards on the ground anyway so who cares. The Saints have learned to live with Bush's mediocrity on the ground and found a role for him where he can be an elite player. Good for them and good for Bush, I say.

No, no. WCO revolutionized the game so much, it makes its way SOMEHOW into a teams playbook. There were no short, timing routes before the WCO, and now look how many there are in the NFL.

And for the Eagles? 57% is down from what they used to be, in the 63%+ zone. But Brian Westbrook, when he needs to get it done, he ALWAYS does.

Are you kidding? Pre-Moss and Welker, Maroney was an average Running Back at best

Maroney was very effective for a rookie running back; IIRC he only won the starting job late and was part of a committee as well. When he was given the chance, he was usually very productive.

In a different offense, I could see him being a 250-300 carry, 4.0-4.5 ypc, 5-10 TD, 1000-1250 yard back - (his career average is about 4.3 IIRC) - much better than what Bush has shown.

Bush can definitely bring up his rushing numbers if he starts to rush North-South instead of East-West.

Obviously - but we're talking about what he is now. What I don't understand is that he's likely had "run north-south" drilled into his head since his first day on the job and he *still* doesn't do it - Faulk and other comparable backs ran between the tackles very effectively, and until Reggie Bush does so, he's not going to reach that level.

Even if he becomes a dangerous back in a 2 back offense, he won't be the *feature* back, and I don't see how you could argue that who is essentially a backup is an "elite" RB.

The Matt Millen era ends! I wonder if he can even get a job at the college level after this debacle. But now who are the poor Lions fans going to vent their anger at after every terrible loss?

I don't think Mendenhall was a bad pick considering Willie Parker broke his leg last season and had surgery. Mendenhall was probably a precautionary pick in case Parker was affected negatively by his injury and/or surgery and was unable to perform well this year. Mendenhall could also be juicy trade material later :)

Well, with Willie out this week we'll all get a good look at him.

And godDAMN, Millen is finally gone. Goodbye, don't let the door hit you. It can only go up from here.

If anything, Bush is comparable to Jones last year - a speed back who wasn't consistent between the tackles - Barber, even though he was the "backup", was the feature back last year.

I don't understand how you can call an average player a "BEAST," hes had 2 average seasons in a high powered offense.

I don't see why anyone wouldn't take Reggie Bush over a player like Maroney and Williams, those types of backs come along every year, but a Marshall Faulk type player only comes along every so often, and Reggie Bush definitely has the skill set to be that type of player. Bush can definitely bring up his rushing numbers if he starts to rush North-South instead of East-West.

PS Jonathan Stewart > DeAngelo Williams

There is only one BEAST in the NFL, his name is Marshawn Lynch

preach on brotha

Honestly, this whole "debate running backs until I can't breathe" fad in this thread is getting on my nerves, let's talk about teams or something. Here's a question: Miami gets blown out by Arizona week 2, then blows out New England week 3. Which game was the aberration?

Yeah, Marshawn knows how to get it done.

DM, the thing is, Arizona is FOR REAL. Moving one of my favorite players, Antrel Rolle, to FS, was a fantastic move. They now have a dynamic safety duo. Even though I like Leinart better, Kurt Warner is getting it done right now. ARI could run away with the divsion.

That 2001 Patriots gameplan may have worked in New York, but you cannot throw screens every other down anymore. Linebackers and DLineman are keying in on this stuff and Cassel has to get better throwing down the field. But hes NOT that good. Without Brady at the helm, I don't see the Pats going to far.

i would be a lot happier about this but i'm pretty sure the fords will hire another incompetent fuckwit, it's the lions way.

but still, this has been a long time coming. let's hope that tatum bell is still around to expedite the moving out process.

Haha!! Excellent!!!

I did hear something today. The Dolphins said that they will continue to use the trick plays that they use throughout the season, and add on additional plays, such as direct snaps to Ted Ginn Jr. It worked like crazy against the Patriots, so do you all think it can work for at least a few more weeks until teams catch-on?

BTW, the HB Direct to Ronnie Brown reminded me of the good ol' days of NCAA 07': HB Direct to Reggie Bush, 15 yards or TD every time!

Well, my Chiefs are looking great this year <.<. Still, at least the Pats lost. Now I have something to smile about.

lol at the lions. Epic fail

For awhile, I thought the lions was going to have a great year last year.......they teased all of us so badly when they started 6-2 last year. With Millen gone, I pray that they have a decent season, and go either at or over .500 from this point of the year just to spite Matt Millen, lol.

My teams and what I predict:

Chargers: (sad start), but they'll make it to the play-offs. I really can't see the Broncos keeping this up.

Steelers: They'll have more wins than losses, and play-offs should be obtainable for them.

Giants: WOW. They're good, and I really like them, but I never expected a 3-0 start.

Cowboys: Strong team, and I can see them going deep into the play-offs, but not to the Super Bowl. Why? Eh,.. Not sure.

lol..really? prepare for a blowout with westbrook and mcnabb both ifty with injuries?

unless you are insinuating matt forte is going to have a field day!

Ehh...

Matt Forte and Lloyd are the only ones that seem to care between and L and a W.

I guess your right about the McNabb thing, but I'll doubt that they'll win.

Too Sleepy for details right now, but here's my predictions for the week

Falcons @ Panthers
Browns @ Bengals
Texans @ Jaguars (Probably the only real upset I'm hoping for but I like Slaton)
Broncos @ Chiefs
49ers @ Saints
Cardinals @ Jets
Packers @ Buccaneers
Vikings @ Titans
Chargers @ Raiders
Bills @ Rams
Redskins @ Cowboys
Eagles @ Bears
Ravens @ Steelers

Then why assert you do not see it? It is not hard to throw in some random disparagement, such as 'Tony Romo will commit another bungle in the jungle' or 'T.O. has been performing better this year so far, but will drop the ball too much again when it counts'.

Well they haven't been too efficient so far this year on either side of the ball, and Romo's thrown a pick or fumbled or done something stupid a lot already this year.
