and... that's what the "If" was for... in any case... perhaps an attack that can hit neutral on the likes of Garchomp or Swampert, that has better accuracy than Focus Blast...

Even if Typhlosion can Taunt, smeagle will Follow Me.
Good counter for Bronzong - Smeagle is Substitute and wait for 5 turns, though Snorlax may Belly Drum and then Metagross will Psych Up.

Heres an aweesome strategy for the tournument. Dont worry it counters itself.

Weavile @Focus Sash
paired up with
Typlosion @ Choice Scarf

- snippity-snip-snip -

I prepared a similar strategy when I went down to the 2008 Qualifiers, except I went with:

Weavile @Focus Sash
- Icy Wind
- Fake Out
- Night Slash
- Ice Shard

Typhlosion @Expert Belt
- Eruption
- Focus Blast
- HP Ice (no time to breed for Electric, this was just a lucky hatchling)
- Protect

This wasn't my best idea, but it was the best I could come up with in the time and resources available to me. The idea with Icy Wind was that it could lower opponents' Speed while Typhlosion Protected, so that Typhlosion would outspeed and not need a Choice Scarf. Not being able to switch moves was one of CS Typhlosion's biggest weaknesses, so this was a fairly effective remedy. Expert Belt ensured a decent chance of an OHKO, or at least near OHKO against Bronzongs that had mixed defenses or weren't Heatproof.

The other two team members were Follow Me Togekiss and SD Garchomp.

It wasn't until I saw Halorain play against zerowing did I realize how screwed this was against Rain Dance teams. Oh well.

The idea was to Eruption if there was a Smeargle + Bronzong combo, but what if you didn't run into one..., then Taunt would have some form of use in stopping some Pokemon from setting things up, or to block Follow Me Togekiss or any unprotected Trick Roomers, though Typhlosion can't Taunt so it doesn't really matter...

It is a typo; I guarantee it. I was there in Orlando watching all his matches, and zerowing was there as well. Groudon is just a typo, probably by an AP press report or something. IIRC his winning team was Hippowdon/Bronzong/Garchomp/something else. There was no Groudon, lol.

edit = @above: IIRC a very similar strategy was used by a Japanese player back in 2007 for their PokemonLeague 2007 qualifiers. It utterly destroyed a hail team that his opponent had. The battle ended in like 5 turns, lol.

Any Dragonite, including ones that might be seen in Showdown, have Inner Focus, which grants immunity to Fake Out. so Weavile won't stop it unless it uses Ice Punch, and even then it might have Yache Berry. Brick Break from Weavile won't KO Heatran, it will only get to around 60% damage. Focus Blast from Typhlosion does much better, but only to around 88%. But if you are locked into Eruption, you would have to switch it out and then back in for you to use it, and by that time Brick Break has already 2KOed.

Once Kingdra/Ludicolo/whatever set up rain by surviving Eruption, it's gg for Typhlosion, because even with Choice Scarf, Kingdra in rain will outspeed it if it has enough Speed EVs(80), which most if not all do. and that is a neutral nature. If they run timid, you are definitely outsped.

Just a few things to think about. ;)
ok thanks but i would still like to read it. do you know any way i can do so?

also where can i find that video where the team was Weavile / Typhlosion vs Hail team wich lasted 5 turns? it sounds very interesting to me.lol

5 turns? WTF?

ok well im finally breeding my team for pokemon showdown 2009. and since i have to test out different teams i need the IV's for a trickroom snorlax and metagross.

Edit: never mind i got it. =D

Sorry for being late. Many Latioses because of this article : http://www.smogon.com/dp/articles/pid_iv_creation

Wow the number of Pokemon in common, the 1st and 2nd place at Osaka only had 1 different Pokemon, Metagross, Latios, Snorlax, and Cresselia seem to be on every team and the only theme team I see is the 2nd place Kumamoto which seems to be a rain team. Everything else looks to be a team with a bunch of OUs slapped together, interesting developments coming out of Japan.

So are they using that article in order to hack their Latioses? Because that's all the article can really help with I think.

I think this might be because these are preliminary tournaments, so the Japanese just want to use teams that are good, consistant, and proven to work.

So, these rounds will eventually condense and have a second round? It's hard to navigate the Japanese site because of the image-based information, but that makes sense, because then they would eliminate more people and get the amount of competitors down to a reasonable number. Unless the US plans to have 203495273409 competitors. :P

Also, I am recognizing some juniors from Showdown 2008 that are winning again......awww. :P

Personally, I believe the Japanese players should try Latias. The extra bulk in Latias, and Sub / CM / Dragon Pulse / Surf, allows it to stall, wall, and attack if you use it correctly. This also allows for different combinations, which would be cool so we don't face the same team over and over... :/

Maybe I'll use my own advice when I make my team, I just got a Latias off Pokeguy anyways :P

There's not much stalling to be done in 2v2. Doubles are all about offense and nothing compares to a Life Orb (or Specs if you're somewhat crazy) STAB Draco Meteor. That extra Special Attack that Latios has on Latias makes all the difference in making him the #1 choice for the job.

The only use that I could see Latias having would be for setting up dual screens, using Helping Hand, or setting up Rain Dance.

Anyone here preordered platinum yet? I plan on preordering it soon.

Me and the rest of Team SLCPokemon have already paid for ours. GameStop is a wonderful place :-) $34.99 +Tax.
I want to see something unique win showdown this year. it would be nice for a change of scene. It is a little boring seeing Metagross on EVERY line-up. anythoughts on Magnezone for a Scizor/Metagross counter? i am considering Magnezone w/HP fire. in theary it should fit alright.

EDIT - HP fire would be good to counter scizor, but not metagross or Bronzong.
HP fire(70) will 1 shot a scizor (except if it has an Occa berry). thunder is a better for metagross and bronzong from a magnezone.

The only thing is, Magnezone gets utterly raped by common Rain Dance moves like Hydro Pump or even Surf, which are likely to be seen as well. He can't even OHKO Metagross anyways with T-Bolt or Thunder for that matter I think, and odds are he's not going to live long enough to Magnet Rise against a doubles team to avoid being raped by EQ or something. Same goes for Bronzong, though at least most doubles variants don't seem to have EQ.

...Team SLCPokemon? What's that?
Magnezone seems like an OK counter, but as the above poster said, waters moves might ruin it. Magnezone has a good SpD stat, just support it with some EVs and light screen, as well as sunny day support to boost the power of HP Fire.

Off-Topic=Any preorder bonus from preordering pokemon platinum from gamestop?

Team SLCPokemon is my local team of 4 friends who run SLCPokemon.com - the Utah Pokemon TCG web site. we swept the SLC JAA qualifyers except for a guy named Fabian Ruiz who got 1st. we run the TCG in utah, and play the video game for a hobby.

and no - i did not get any bonus for pre-ordering platinum...yet.

very cool, and i also preordered my platinum at gamestop. winning would be a great accomplishment her on smogon. lets say one of us wins, they'll be praised around smogon for sometime till the next showdown if they have one in 2010.

I wouldn't expect anything less from Smogoners, despite there appearing to be a singles lv. 100 OU standard clauses playing mold. :)

That being said, perhaps this year I might show up at the LA tourney, if there is one, and cheer everyone on. Not having Wi-Fi and being terrible at doubles, I wouldn't participate. >_>;
