It is never impossible to stop a [D]DoS attack.

First off if you have the IP Firewall blocked, gg the [D]DoS stops.

Second the new netbattle has a built in firewall, so I've heard, but I have yet to see it//have not seen it.

And if you block packet flow from 1 IP address, then you aren't denying other people's service.

PROTIP: The first D in DDoS stands for Distributed. This means that the packet flow is "distributed" between a lot of different IP addresses, meaning you CANNOT simply block one IP address, and to claim any of the things you did means that you not only have pretty much no knowledge of security, nor did you care enough to do a little homework about it.

Assuming the "anybody" knows java6 to "instantly" fix the bug.

More people know Java than VB, but You're missing the point. With Shoddy, anyone can fix anything as long as they know java6. With NetBattle, only a select group of people can. Your criticism is entirely invalid as it has nothing to do with the point I was making about open source software in general.

Well, some bugs in Shoddy are easy to fix if you know Java. Some are heavily ingrained into how Shoddy handles game mechanics and are more problematic. For instance, the bug where Shadow Tag doesn't actually switch when it's Skill Swapped. That's because Shoddy treats 'trapped' as a status effect on the Shadow Tag Pokémon's opponent, when in reality the code should check to see if one of the opponents has Shadow Tag and prevent the player from choosing to switch if one does.

Similarly, it would take a lot of doing to upgrade Shoddy for Doubles. For one thing, the client would have to be redesigned to allow you to choose a target for your moves. The code also currently uses a lot of 'shortcuts' that assume the game is Singles.

I think you mean NB does have some parts that are superior or SB or vise versa, just might want to change that for future thread-readers.

Yes, I meant there are some places in which NB is superior to Shoddy.

Why do people complain with what they are given? (Granted this might seem hypocritical since I (and many others) complained about shoddy when that's all we had for a DP sim)

Because complaining will either cause the developers to make a change to fix the complaint, or else let other people know that there is a market for a new product because the devs of the current product(s) are unwilling / unable to make the fixes.

If this is the arguement, then there should barely be any 31 IV all pokemon, like barely any at all.

It simulates competitive battling, not competitive breeding. It is possible, given enough time / luck, to get a 31 all breedable Pokemon in any nature, or a 31 all non-breedable Pokemon in select few natures (for example, you can get a Mewtwo with 31 all and Modest).

I'm very well aware what security through obscurity means.

But not all of the people reading my posts do.

First off if you have the IP Firewall blocked, gg the [D]DoS stops.

What IP do you block? The whole point of a Distributed Denial of Service attack (as opposed to the 'standard' DoS) is that there are too many IPs to block (the other purposes are to obscure the real attacker and to maximize the upstream bandwidth available for attack). You gain control over several machines (there are botnets, also known as zombie fleets, with hundreds of thousands of computers) and then launch your DDoS. You cannot filter the traffic fast enough.

In what way does it give false information?

I also noticed you said netbattle's damage was incorrect also, in what way?

The numbers it uses are not the numbers that you'd get in game. The damage is wrong. As an obvious example, low-level Pokemon getting a critical hit does nothing in-battle on NB, while it should approximately double damage in all circumstances. There are other problems, of course, but this is the first one that springs to mind and is 'obvious'.

Due to the number of requests, I've decided to put the old Smogon NetBattle server back up temporarily with D/P support. It's located at the same address, smogon.zapto.org.

It takes more knowledge/research to find out how to change your SID.

Also running a proxy does not take more time then changing your SID.
Like it has been said, any obscure method of identification is never secure. For secure authentication and identification, all you can have/need is the IP address and a username/password. And that's exactly what Shoddy Battle relies on.

A SID change can be done in just a matter of a few seconds.

Is it me, or the registry has not been working for some time now?
It is true. As far as I can tell, Bayleef is MIA. Most servers are still up (although the 2 on white base's aren't; 90.199.236.44 has switched ip, it is now mofoscabin.zapto.org). Just a temporary upset.

Well fuck... turns out Clefable can't do all the shit shoddy has been letting me do... You can't run counter, seismic toss or softboiled, on clefable with magic guard apparently. Are they wrong or has shoddy and this community been wrong the whole time?

Clefairy has a chance to change abilities if it is transferred from 3rd Gen upon evolution. Netbattle is wrong.

If clefable is completely useless in NetBattle why would anyone from UU ever play it lol

I hope the bugs get down so I can at least use it as a doubles sim until TMN's sim or Competitior arrives. Even though it's closed source and thus inherently worse than Shoddy.

The reason half the bugs aren't fixed by now is because it's closed source. The reason DP Netbattle just arrived is because it's closed source.

Chris is me, I thought Competitor had gone under? I haven't heard anything about it in at least a year?

I'm rather enjoying using NetBattle, mostly for nostalgia's sake, but ultimately I prefer Shoddy. The ranking system really helps you judge how well you are doing.

You guys mentioned that Netbattle is open source/close source. Does this make your computer more vunerable to hackers? (As they can find IP numbers, etc.)

Thats not what they mean. Open source means anyone can see the code, closed source means only the programmers can. So in an open Source, anyone can fix a hole, anyone can fix it as well. In a closed Source Program, people can look for holes but only the people who see the code can fix it

Whenever I try and "Start Battling" or "Host Server" in Netbattle, it says: "Runtime Error 339"

Component 'MSWINSCK.OCX' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

Does anyone have any advice? The FAQS section of the site, doesn't offer any help, it only discusses moves.
