How Did You Get Interested in Anime?

Started out with Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon the generic dub anime that was shown. However it wasn't until Toonami that i really got into anime as i loved Gundam Wing which sparked my love for the entire Gundam Series. Before i usually just stuck to a few shows then i realized that i was limiting myself from awesoem anime series that are out there. Then i started branching out to other series like Gundam, Bleach, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist and so on.

What I meant was that 4kids made an already mediocre show even worse. And yes, Funimation kicks ass.
 
Dragonball and Pokemon were the first anime series I ever really followed, though at the time I didn't know the word "anime". I never really got into DBZ but I did watch Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh! quite a bit.

I didn't really start getting into anime until watching Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Inuyasha and others on Adult Swim.

Some of the series I remember watching as a kid include DragonBall Z, Doraemon, Dr Slump, Chibi Maruko-chan and Sailor Moon...
 
I'm gonna go out on a limb here, but some of my favorite animes weren't made in japan. Megas XLR and Avatar.
Megas was pure awesome for the fact that it was unique (Parking a red car on a mech and driving it ftw!). And the plot was cool, and the jokes were great.
Avatar because the series had a lot of continuity and life lessons. Really well-drawn too. And a some real martial arts moves. Ah, and it actually finished. Better than can be said for a bunch of other animes. Such a shame that the movie looks like it'll be awful.
 
DragonBall [Z] is pretty much all I've ever watched in terms of anime. As with a lot of these childhood obsessions, you really had to watch it "from the beginning" (as in, when it was really popular) to fully appreciate it. As much as I love the series, I can see why some people think it's silly. On the other hand, this is exactly why I can't look at these top 10 anime lists and just start watching something like, say, Neon Genesis. Digimon season 1-3 were pretty sick too, I remember watching the entire first three seasons in a weekend about a year and a half ago. I broke my computer chair from leaning back on it too lol.

I don't think it's been brought up in this thread yet, but Afro Samurai is godlike. The first one moreso than the second one, but both films are great. I saw that Samuel Jackson was in it so I figured I'd pick it up so I could have a good laugh. I think this is when I passed the "anime is for (BAN ME PLEASE)s" phase.
 
Long before Toonami aired I used to rent some movies from my local Blockbuster. I know that I had rented a few samurai anime films (I have no idea what they're called now) but I also saw a Fatal Fury movie which I thought was awesome. -and if I recall, DBZ used to air on UPN (I'm not sure if that's a national station) a few years before Toonami on Sunday mornings. Of course, the birth of Toonami really blew the doors open for me with things like Outlaw Star and Kenshin.

Side note: the thing that really compelled me to get into anime from the very beginning was that anime series tend to have an ending that makes sense. American cartoons just kind of recycle until cancelation... like Mighty Max... I crave closure in my tv investments.
 
I was a fan of Dragonball and Dragonball Z up untill Buu (Cell Saga wasn't that bad, come on) and Gundam Wing earlier on. Gundam Wing especially got me interested in the more apocolyptic/ mecha themed shows, which subsequentially lead to be devouring Neon Genesis Evangelion and Code Geass in a relatively short amount of time. I thoroughly enjoyed NGE right until the respective endings of the series, neither of which I can admit to being a fan of (though personally drawing away from the psychological interpretation of it all, I was kind of expecting a more encompassing ending, and the first ending especially just confused the fuck out of me).

Code Geass was a series I finished in essentially 2 weeks, and is one of the best television shows (not even limited to anime) that I've ever watched. The conclusion was perfect in its cathartic effect.

Can someone point me towards anything of substantial calibur along the same lines of the above shows? I'm willing to try anything right now, seeing as I'm fairly new to the genre.
 
It started with Pokemon back when I was a wee lad, then moved on to Toonami and Adult Swim till it got to where I am now where I use MyAnimeList.

Not necessarily Firestorm. It's just that I've already tried watching Brotherhood, and didn't get very far into it due to a lack of interest. I guess I could try out One Piece, but I never really understood what it was about, and every ad I've seen for the show involves some weird never quite serious impression on me. Though, if it's as good as you say, I'll definitely give it a shot.

The last episode shown was what would happen if the word "serious" was to take the form of an animated television episode. That said, it takes a while to get going but the pay off is definitely worth it. I recommend you hit the end of the Merman arc which is about 40 episodes in I think. It's not a major arc, but that's around when it starts to pickup.

If you liked Code Geass, I'd recommend trying out Death Note. Code Geass is what you'd get if you combined Death Note and Gundam into one show really. One Piece is like a refined Dragon Ball Z. For Death Note you should be fine either with English or Japanese I believe (although L's weirdness doesn't seem to carry over to his English VA as much). With One Piece, you want to stay with Japanese or English by FUNimation. Stay the hell away from English by 4Kids.
 
Funny story. My mom bought me a Barney video but it had a Pokemon VCR inside of it instead. I just watched and watched it lol it was obsessive!!! I stopped watching it around 2006, but I had a HUGE collection of Pokemon VCRs, DVDs, games, cards, you name it! I started to give all my stuff away because I became obsessed with school because all my friends started partying (lol I was like 12).

Anyways, I caught my boyfriend smuggling pokemon cards in January this year and remembered that I used to watch the anime. I don't watch it anymore, but that is how I got caught up in pokemon again. I play on Shoddy and I got Platinum and I plan to get the remakes of Gold and Silver.
 
My friend said I should watch some since I expressed interest when he was talking about it all the time a few years ago. I watched a few shitty ones at first so I could appreciate the good ones much better. Death Note has been my favourite since I saw it, TTGL came kinda close.
 
I got into Anime by watching DBZ, digimon, Metabots, and street fighter the series.

I also loved beyblades and one piece

Except Kurokami is pretty bad, I seriously would not recommend it to anyone even if they liked the genre. If you're looking for free and legal streamable anime, check out Hulu (their quality is pretty good, though there are some ads). Funimation has a bunch of stuff hosted there, including

Can't speak for all of those (though School Rumble is awesome) but there are plenty to choose from, at least. Funimation also has additional videos on their website iirc but the video section is down right now.

In addition, Crunchyroll has a lot of legal stuff (mostly subbed as opposed to dubbed like Funimation), but their website frequently has loading problems and the quality isn't as good.
 
I would like to suggest everyone boycott crunchyroll. They reduced quality from 480p to 320p when they became more 'legal' and have introduced unblockable advertisements that come up over episodes in fullscreen. Companies never fucking learn.

More info? I find "they needed to pay for the abnormal amount of bandwidth costs so they could continue functioning" a little hard to swallow as a reason to boycott. If there's more to this I'd love to read it.

kurokami has actually become rather popular both online and at conventions, but you have the right to like or dislike whatever you wish.

I do not know what you mean by more information. It is quite clear that most models of any service, over time, lean toward screwing over those whose trust it gains. They never had to do these things without having agreements, so I think costs would have been higher when they provided more series and had no exclusive agreements to protect them.

In this case, crunchyroll seemed to be providing a nice service even with the steep (and unworkable) wait of a week for non-payers. Anyway, if you have used it, I would assume it happened to you; unblockable Kentucky Fried Chicken advertisements were popping down in fullscreen. It happened to me three times in an episode's time. That is pretty ridiculous. 320p is also obviously a 50% loss in quality from 480p and reason enough to pirate for anyone.

Because I have a fucking internet connection and can thus watch it more quickly without unblockable advertisements harassing me in lower quality. I have no reason to be happy with a business abusing its users trust. My mother does not fucking run crunchyroll.
 
ferron, it seems like youtube hasn't uploaded the full series yet so I'm hinging on the last three eps I believe.

*Spoiler* The ending was unpredictable however, Reishin's facade wasn't really justified in my opinion. Same with Akane near the end. As a concept also, it seems that a lot of the power Kuro/Kaita were getting came from a "believe in yourself that's the key to everything" clause that I don't like seeing in anime. Otherwise, the storyline is pretty good, and the series has been a decent watch.

firestorm, I might try out Death Note then.

Fishin, from that list, I've also watched Suzuka, and xxxHolic. Problems with both series: Suzuka is subscribes to the harem qualification wayyyy to much, and ends up developing its characters terribly. Akitsuki, the guy the plot mainly revolves around, is so static and childish pretty much to the end of the series that it's impossible to like him. Also, it's pretty cheesy in the way a lot of the relationships are built. Don't even get me started on xxxHolic, I watched like 9-12 eps tops before packing it in on that show. I couldn't surmise in that time the following: main character's purpose, overall direction of the plot. So yeah, a good combination imo for ditching it.

I want to know more about what trust it violated. You were a goddamn leech and you're complaining when the site realized that this was unsustainable? Seriously? I mean, the only reason even YouTube can survive is because Google makes billions off its other properties. Are you trying to tell me you expect this website to stay afloat with no advertisements and 640x480 streaming?

Unblockable full screen ads that don't pause the video is a poor decision IMO as tha can drive away viewers, but boycotting a website because they need to become financially stable to continue providing a service reeks of childish entitlement.
