Smogon's Youtube Account

I was wondering, would it be a good idea for Smogon to have a youtube account? You could tape the finals of big tournaments (like the smogon tour) and post them on youtube for members that did not see it. Plus putting Smogon on youtube would increase it's popularity because it is on such a well known site.

As for the peson that runs the account and knows the password im not sure, maybe a staff member or somebody of that variety.

For example somebody videotapes the finals of the next big tournament, then after it they upload it in youtube in the smogon account. After that, they post a link to it in a popular forum or the smog or something, and the people that were not there to witness it can now see the finals of that tourney.

Note (that last paragraph was assuming the tourney is held in Shoddybattle)
 
I don't think that that many people would enjoy watching shoddy battle. It is fun to play, but kind of boring to watch IMO. I think smogon has all of the publicity it needs, without attracting all of the noobs from other sites

yes, smogon forums require a knowledge of ivs, evs, natures, etc and ive looked over other forums *coughGamefaqscough* and some people there no absolutely NOTHING about these. Also, Shoddy is pretty boring to watch.
 
I don't think it would be that bad, I mean, publicity for Smogon isn't really a bad thing, and I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in watching a tournament finals match. Not only would they learn from players with great battling skill, they would be able to watch the battle at their own leisure. Although that's probably as far as the Channel would go, as I don't see much more that could be recorded besides Tournies. I also wouldn't mind making the channel, but I'd have to share the pw with some mods of course, in order to make it "official". Definitely a good idea, and I 100% support it!
 
I would like this if I miss a tournament finals. They usually post logs, but it would be nice to see them without all the odd comments.
 
This seems like a fine idea, but there are more things that could go on than just shoddy tourney finals. Selected Wi-Fi battles, maybe with commentary from an experienced player, video tutorials for various topics (EV training, RNG abuse, how to use/get shoddy (including the little things many players miss), play in different tiers, ect..), and other useful videos could be made and collected. And as for the password holder, it could easily be shared by a group who run the channel.
 
This seems pretty cool. As for the tournament finals thing, I remember someone turning a warstory into a Wi-fi fight, so that could make it less boring.
 
Well, it is at least true (for me) that it is more fun to watch a battle than to read a battle log. I assume it would be done with a screen recorder, and that whoever is responsible for recording must be ready at any time as well as informed about where the battle will take place, etc. But other than those minor problems I think this would be pretty cool... It might make a good way to promote Smogon too, if we can show people the skill of the finalists in tournaments and how intense the battles and predictions can (sometimes) get.

This. I'd volunteer as one of the Tourney Mods to get this set up.

EDIT: Well I went ahead and have saved the YouTube account "Smogondotcom" (Smogon was already take... wtf). I'm gonna start researching screen capturing devices. If anyone wants to help me, shoot a PM my way.
 
This is a good idea and I'd love to support it. Matty, if you're looking for a program, I personally use Wisdom screen recording. There's a free download right here. It's a quick download and really simple to use. If you want a demo I'll upload a testing battle to my youtube account to show you its clarity and stuff.

Anyway cool idea, hope it goes well. Please don't limit yourselves to battles though, there are a lot of other things you can make useful vids about.
 
I fully support this idea. I downloaded the software (very easy to install and use btw) and am planning to record the husk vs. EW battle today. BTW, we should probably make a thread somewhere as this is now going to happen if enough people help. And we need a thread to nominate videos and such.

P.S. I'd love to help with this. I can pretty easily record big matches and stuff.

Edit: I recorded it and it's currently uploading. I just wanted to give you guys an example of what a Shoddy Battle match will look like unedited.
 
I can try and help out with this, it's a cool idea and it'd be great to promote tournaments. People will view videos of big tournaments and want to get more involved.
 
If you guys have videos PM me. I'll give you the password to the Smogon account so you can upload them yourselves. This password is only going to be given out to active filmers however.
 
If you're going to record a battle, I'd recommend that you do whatever you can to moderate the volume level of the spectators. There's a lot of attention seekers out there and if they hear a battle is being recorded they'll be there all 'WOOO LOOK AT ME ARENT IM RANDOM' which is pretty much guaranteed to ruin the experience for anybody who's watching the video.

So if you're recording and somebody's being a dick, just tell a mod. Hopefully it won't be too much of a problem though.

I agree. There's probably a lot of people that will do that, especially on the Smogon Server. Anyways, here's what I got for the video. I still have to edit it, but for now you guys can tell me what you think.
 
I'm sure this is what you meant by edit- but please make sure you're editing out the time between moves. A second is okay. But the wait in that video between moves was killing me.

Yeah, I know what you're saying. I was actually thinking of doing this myself too. But I think we should also have something else in the background. It would be cool to have music, but even cooler if one of the battlers (like EW or someone else) could comment, it would sort of be like a live warstory.
 
What we need is some sort of log reader that translates them into vids. Not that I have any idea of how easy/hard that would be to make :/

Wouldn't something like SmogonVideos be a better name? Smogondotcom just seems messy and the Smogon name doesn't really stand out. May be a nitpick but thought I may as well suggest it if this is going to be a long term thing.

But yeah I like the idea and look foward to seeing how it pans out, so gl.

If there is commentary, i would actually prefer to have the wait so long as its not like 50 seconds+. A highly speeded up battle would give you little time to think the moves through.

Sadly, yes, I had the same idea yesterday (and exact same name) it gives "This account is closed. " when you try to go the the userpage, and does not allow you to register it. You also can't use Smogon_University or Smogon-University or anything like that thanks to youtube blocking odd characters in usernames.

However... *tries a few* SmogonU is still available, its not perfect but I like it a lot more than smogondotcom, which just sounds like it was chosen becaue nothing else was available. I registered to avoid someone seeing this and grabbing it, and am sending matty the password in case he wants it and asking him to change the pass if he does. Also got SmogonU@gmail to go with it. Sadly it did not let me give Smogon's real age of about 5 when signing up...
