Smeargle's Studio General Thread: Spriting and Banners go here!

So, I've decided to try my hand at animation, since I want to try to make my own pokemon fighting game, featuring fighting pokemon (of course).

This is my first attempt, only three frames so it's a bit jerky, I'll smooth it out later. Anybody that has animation know how have any C+C or advice for me?

Did you scratch that? IMO if you're just mucking around using other sprites is easier as you can play around with the fighting engine

Two practice devamps following the process MrBlack posted in the WSC. If anyone is having trouble figuring out how to revamp well I recommend using that as a guide.

I would really like an avatar of an Arcanine, with the word 'Nightrain' on it somewhere. Everything else is up to you, as long as it looks cool :)
Thanks.

Yes they were scratched, there are no good pokemon sprites out there that I can work with for what I want to do, so it's easier for me to scratch them. After all Nintendo hasn't been smart enough to make a 2D fighting game using pokemon.

I haven't decided if I'm going to use Mugen or Fighter Maker yet, I'm going to have to make the sprites first.

Canti, the pose itself looks awkward and off balance. If Hitmonlee was in a real battle, he would be easily knocked off his feet and left wide open for attack.

Since he fights primarily using his feet, perhaps a stance that showcases this would be better. (and more natural looking)

Regal Bryant from Tales of Phantasia is a good example, being a warrior who only uses his legs.

After youwork out a base pose, we can continue with more fluid animations.

Do you mind me asking what program you use for the animation?

It's called Graphics Gale.

I really appreciate your input KOA, I'm gonna work on the next character, and then I'll come back to Hitmonlee. I don't wanna get stuck on one sprite for too long. Also, would you happen to have an animation of that character? Because that pose also looks very awkward for just an idle stance.

K, so I decided to go with smaller sprites. This should be a lot more manageable for me and my inexperienced one-man team.

I want to practice more on the animation, so I'll flesh this out after I got some critique. This animation has 6 unique frames instead of 3, and is 8 frames long instead of 4.

Edit: Okay, here's the new Hitmonlee pose, what do you guys think (in addition to the other animation).

Glad I could help :) Also, those and the Raikou look very nice indeed (especially the Raikou, that is one of my favourite Pokemon sprites and you've done it perfectly)

My only suggestion is choose a paler blue scheme for Swampert because he looks like an ice sculpture atm :)

TVboy, those look good to me, although the Blaziken looks more like it's pulling back a punch rather than a basic stance (which is something you'd want anyway!) I like the more aggressive, ready-to-roll Hitmonlee.

Canti, the new Hitmonlee looks good, but I reckon it would look better with the leg higher up, and at the knee, bend at close to a right angle. the animation link is broken so no comment there. Blaziken's left hand (from our side) is a bit weird looking, and could do with some clearing up.

Good news, all! I am free for a whole day because my school has a PTA conference today! Gotta love the PTA; for our school, PTA conference= Freetime. So expect my WSC entry shortly and the Bronze Koffing later today (hopefully).

@Canti: Lee looks pretty good, IMO, but I think the Blaziken's arms could still use some work. (our) Left arm looks too bulky for Blaziken, and the other arm seems to curve down without an elbow joint, making it look kindof rubbery. Also, the (head feathers/ hair/ whatever you call those things coming down from its head) don't round off at the end like that; they normally end in points.

Still, I like the concept for a Pokemon Fighting Game. Closest thing to that is Pokemon Scramble, which I desperately hope is coming to America. Looking good so far, though. Keep up the good work!

Hey Xand if you're free why not do that 3rd gen. Slaking/Hariyama revamp that you've been procrastinating against for over a month ;)

And would you mind putting step-by-step instructions aswell? I'd love to do that sort of thing myself.

EDIT:

Wichu I've been using this sprite:

(Plat). Unfortunately I really don't have the time to redo the shading/ make it completely perfect. Sorry. And did you actually read my suggestions on tackling this project?

It's improving, although the shading still doesn't look smooth. I smoothed up some of the shading on its body for reference:
wobb2.png

Zoomed in (top is yours, bottom is mine):
tempg.png

I hope you understand what I mean. Yours just used 2 gradients (1 pixel left for each pixel up, and 2 pixels left for each one up); varying the gradient towards the ends of the curve makes it look a lot smoother. I didn't do anything else to the sprite, if you want to improve it further.

Also, use the official Wobbuffet sprites for reference to shading/outlining style:
wobb1.png

Basically, try and get yours similar, but scaled up. For example, notice how Wobbuffet's eyes in the official sprite use the darkest shade of blue as well as black to make them bolder and stand out. Also, it uses an extra highlighrt shade on the head.

I thought I passed that particular potato to Canti, honestly. I might get around to it eventually, depends on whether I can finish my current Projects.

As for the step-by-step instructions, do you mean scratching? I can prob. do that, but before I post my method, I would like to make sure that's what you mean.

@Wichu: I don't know if I've posted this yet, but I'll help with the Amethyst Dex whenever I can. I call Gallade! (obviously)

I'm sure Canti passed it back to you... I'll check.

I mean revamping a 3rd gen sprite, size and outline and stuff. But of course I'd enjoy scratching input aswell ;)

EDIT:
Alchemator, I'll do the revamp for you as soon as I finish my avy. A lot of people think that "revamp" just equals recolor, so 3rd gen revamps aren't popular.

I take some amount of offense to that. I reshade mine, fix the outline, etc. I just don't resize them like you do. I don't do 3rd gen revamps because of this and the fact that their actual sprite doesn't need repair like 1st and 2nd gen sprites. Trust me, I do a LOT more than recoloring them, thank you very much. :|

By the way, if you're not directing that at me, ignore the above text. I just assume you're talking about me since I've done one recently.

I wasn't talking about you XandZero2, your revamps come out nice. I don't always resize my revamps either, if you've seen my Espeon revamp, though that's because DPP Espeon sprites are the same size as the G/S sprites.
You can do the Slaking revamp if you want.

EDIT2: The plot thickens!
Oh, and you can take Slaking. I have to study for a test this week (If I don't make an A, I'm going to die a horrible, horrible death), and I've also been wanting to add some entries to the GDN for a while now. So, it's all yours.
But he never actually confirmed that.

And Wichu needs to read my edit to the post above, for reference here is the post I wanted him to look at.

Well, I see your point. I'll try to get to that soon then.

In the meantime, here's my WSC entry post, up for C+C.
HERE'S REGI(gigas)!

WSCWeek8.png

Whoot, first devamp, and fully scratched! Credits to (R/B)Magneton for (un)willngly... um... Donating (yeah... that's the word...) his colors.

The main problem I have with most of the entries here is the lack of both dappling and dots. I think mine made up for this, though, and looks great while doing this!

Btw, I didn't trans it since it has dots, and dots make it look terrible on dark backgrounds. That's the glory of RBYGSC sprites, though: They only look good on WHITE. Not gray, not anything else. Just White.

After I take a break, I'll work on a Scratching guide of my own method.

Can someone make me a Header for my forum?

- 733px x 192px
- Renders: Artworks of Azelf, Arcanine, Salamence, Alakazam, Shaymin-L, Gengar, Gyarados, all with effect like in my avatar (that glow around the Render)
- Font: Pokemon Competitive-Battling Federation
- Background: Some black-colors, mixed with dark blue-colors

I only can offer Pokésav'd Pokémon as price. I hope, someone make this. Thanks forwards!
