i havnt played since before platinum came out, now theres all this RNG and SID everywhere, what are they and what do they do?

For those of you that play Ubers, could Giratina (altered forme) be used as a special wall? I see on it's analysis that it only really focuses on Defense over Special Defense, even though they have the same base stat. Just wondering because I'm about to abuse my Platinum one, and I was thinking about a Calm HP Fire one, and wanted to know before I caught it if it could have any use. Or is this just plain stupid w/ all the special attackers in Ubers?

Could be possible but generally if you need a special wall in ubers you jsut use blissy

Yeah, that's what I'd been thinking, but maybe for the suprise factor since it's usually a defensive wall theyy might switch in a special attacker. I still need to run some calculations first anyways. Plus it can stop spin blockers, something Blissey can't. If Foretress is the spinner, then it also gets a x4 Super effective hit w/ HP Fire.

RNG is Random Number Generator. SID is secret ID. Both are hidden components of the actual games, but are deducible. They are used to get very good, if not perfect IV spreads in-game.

To expand: RNG manipulation/abuse is a somewhat-complicated technique that if done correctly gets you (virtually) any IV spread you want, usually with an hour or so of effort. It works in Diamond and Pearl just as well as Platinum.

SID is Secret ID, like a second Trainer ID that is hidden. You need to know it to use RNG manipulation to get shinies; you can find it if you already have one random or a few chained shinies. You don't need to know your SID if you want to RNG manipulate for IV spreads.

Thank you.

so can you use RNG to get the hidden power you want as well?

Yes. This is a prime example of RNG abuse.

I've spent months making teams, EV training them, and then breaking them apart trying to get the best one. I've tried to make teams of Pokemon that would look good in contrast to each other, ones that used favorites, etc. Overall it's been annoying as shit. I have a Claydol for most of my leads, but it doesn't work entirely to well with some of the others I've made. The reason for this post is to ask for what would be the most useful leads in today's non-Uber, mixed, or standard tier metagame. I use mixed teams since most of my battling is done on 4chan's /v/ community rather than in tournaments.

Any help is appreciated.

I think Aerodactyl should work well on most teams. Fastest rocker so can taunt slower things. It also doesn't mind too much if it gets tricked a scarf; ideally you predict it, rock on the first turn, then switch out and Aero's now a not-bad revenge killer.
You wouldn't want it on a highly defensive team of course, but on most balanced or offensive teams it should fit well.

Cool, thanks. UU/NU doesn't really offer any great leads so Aero might be the one.

Can somebody please explain me the effect of Acupressure. I don't understand it that great... Thanks in advance

It increases a random stat x2. It could pick Attack (in which case it would be just like a Swords Dance), Defense (Iron Defense), Special Attack (Nasty Plot), Special Defense (Amnesia), Speed (Agility), or even Evasion or Accuracy.

Bulbapedia describes it like this: "Acupressure chooses one of the user's Stats at random and raises it by two stages. It can raise either the user's Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Attack, Special Defense, Accuracy or Evasion stat.
In a double battle, Acupressure may also be used on an ally to raise one if its stats chosen at random."

TY :)

EDIT: I have another question. If I play Doubles and start off with Regigigas and Shuckle. I use Gastro Acid on Regigigas. Does he have to wait several turns before he gets the boosts?

No problem!

"Gastro Acid cancels the target's in-battle ability. Therefore, the target's ability will be ignored until it is switched out, even if it Transforms. It does not affect abilities that only have an effect outside of battle, such as Pickup."

He won't have the boosts on the first turn, since even with half speed he'll go before Shuckle, but after that Slow Start is gone for good.

Question: is there any advantage of holding a Plate over holding a different type-boosting item? (I.E. Scizor with Iron Plate instead of Metal Coat).

There is no difference. According to Smogon's items page, type-specific items boost moves by 20%. Usually, there is a superior item choice, so they aren't used much. E.g, Scizor benefits more from Choice Band's power boost than it does from the surprise value of Iron Plate/Metal Coat.

Thanks MrIndigo for the previous answer :D.

Another question...does the smogon competitive scene play imported Japanese Heartgold/Soulsilver on their DSs with wifi? Because it seems like everybody plays Platinum here even though having played Heartgold already. I was contemplating buying an imported japanese HG/SS because I heard about the Mew Event happening on the 29th & being japan only.. is that a wise choice? Is there an option for the story text to be in english (some japanese characters don't bother me, like in blakblastoise's video)/is it possible to trade w/ english platinum games etc.. thanks in advance.

Can someone please explain me how the move Crush Grip goes? I don't understand the calculations...

The more HP an opponent has, the stronger the move is. If an opponent is at full HP, the move has 120 base power. If they're at half HP, it's 60 base power, etc.

its not letting me edit my last post, so is there any way i can get shaymin myself in platinum?

You have to hack the "Oak's Letter" key item, but don't worry: this doesn't affect the Pokémon in any way.
