Final Grades/GPA thread/School/University Discussion

Anyone can get A's without AP or IB classes. One AP/IB class? You should be ashamed to have less than a 4.0. Hell, I have 4 AP classes right now (US HIstory, Physics, Chemistry, Calculus BC), missed the whole semester (exchange), came for the finals to see where I'd be, and ACED THEM ALL (well, History was a 97% because of my essay-writing skills). But I worked my ass off for 5 months, doing double work (Slovene school and US school). Try THAT on for size.

Unfortunately I do not have a 4.0. My chemistry class was a bitch last year and I learned more than I ever have in a class, but the tests were insane and not curved (one test's average was 13%). Still 89.5% both semesters isn't bad for a teacher who doesn't give A's.
I'm sorry, but I can't be the only one who sees the irony in someone calling others out for not getting straight As in school based on anecdotal evidence and then lists the subjectivity of his teacher as the reason he didn't get straight As. Some of you are so damn high on yourself that this thread is going to make for some delicious reading when you hit university.

well for me 1st semester just ended here are grades ( im in 8th grade)

History-B+
Study Skills-B (makes you do all these long essays about good study habits lol)
PE-A
English-B
Advanced math (algebra)-B- (hate math:<)
Literature-A-
Science-B
Geo art-A (just have to complete the projects)
Discovery art-A- (Actually grades you on the art)

idk what my gpa is. I guess a 3. something. Im pretty much a B student and if I get anything less than a B my parents freak out...stupid algebra lol

Advanced Spanish Writing for Native Speakers (SPN 3343): C+
Advanced Spanish Oral Communication for Native Speakers (SPN 3310): A-
Introduction to Psychology: A-
Introduction to Education: A
Introduction to Sociology: A
Honor's Seminar: A

My native writer's class is incredibly difficult-- for example: when he does diction, he goes through entire paragraphs without breaks at a normal talking speed (try keeping up with a pen) and doesn't repeat them. He takes about 3% off of the final grade for every bleep you make. He's even taken 5% off my exam for not writing "al dorso" in the corner of the page despite the fact that it was obvious my paper continued.

And yea, I'm done with my UCC... so I'm free to explore possible careers.

Like others have said, fantastic grades can only get you so far man. You can have the best grades anyone has ever had but if you treat your peers/co-workers etc like that you probably won't get far in life :|

But anyway that's enough negativity ~_~;

Still no luck on scholarships. I applied for another small one that is based on merit and volunteering so I should get it, but I'd definitely like a larger one that is applicable.

@ chaos - that is fantastic! (that doesn't even begin to cover how cool that is imo ! Brown is so nice!)

English 12 IB HL - 90
English 12 - 90 (same course, GPA counts double)
Math IB SL -93
Chemistry IB SL - >93 (Teacher is scaling)
Physics IB HL >80 (Teacher is scaling). Jesus, that last test saved my ass for the semester. Thank God I actually studied for it (It was one of the bigger tests too).
History IB HL - 90 (And I'm only getting a 5... maybe a 6 though I doubt it)
CAS - either 85 or 100.
Peer Tutoring - 92
Band - >90 (Teacher said he would definitely give me above 90. How high, I don't)

Now for the sad part... Predicted Grades...

Chemistry - 6/7 (Depends on how badly the teacher wants to fuck me. I got the second highest mark on the midterm, but wasn't enough to push it to a percentage near 7. I'm hoping he won't be a dick, and see that I've been consistently getting in the top 3 for every test).
Math - 6/7 (My friend got a 60 on his midterm and got a 6. I don't know how that's going to affect me, but I'm giving myself a 6)
History - 5/6 (My essays have been 5 and one 5/6, but my document questions have been wayyy up there, near a 7, so I don't know. My percentage says 6, but my essays say a 5. I'm going with a 5 on this one)
Physics - 5 (I dicked around class. What do you expect me to get?)
English - 6 (I actually tried for english this semester. Awesome teacher, and I did a fairly good job on the english oral commentary)
French - 6 (Took the French SL test last year.)
Extra points -1 (EE probably a B, TOK I got absolutely raped on. I've improved my TOK essay substantially [up to a B] but I doubt they'll take that into consideration)

So it looks like around 35-38, which is kind of disappointing.

A friend of mine just accepted Brown's offer for his undergrad - he'll be playing football and track for them.

....and I apparantly missed the deadline for almost all of my schools for the CSS Profile. I had no idea this thing existed. The deadline was February first. I just called a school and they said it'll be late but I can fill it out tonight and submit it.

Ugh I'm so pissed right now, at myself for not seeing this and at my school for not telling _anyone_ about this thing :(

CSS profile?

The CSS profile is found on College Board. It apparantly goes hand in hand with the FAFSA, except it's due much earlier....

Admitted to Brown University CS PhD today, full funding

Schweet. If you want a quick slice of pizza on-campus that's legit right next to the computer labs/SciLi, go to Nice Slice.

Anyway, who else has been accepted to Early Action/Early Admission schools? At a quick glance, only Bam/Danyul have been. I got accepted EA to University of Rhode Island's PharmD program, with a presidential scholarship (essentially $10K), and I just got my letter from UNH's Honors Program with the equivalent scholarship.

Edit: just got my letter from WPI today!

ugh I'm trying to find scholarships but it's really difficult. Apart from ones offered through the schools I applied to (which I won't know if I will be eligible for), the only ones I've found are local ones that have a lot of competition. Finding scholarships is even more stressful than the admissions process for me because I can't go to college if I can't find some way to pay for it, since my parents make too much money for me to get financial aid but won't help me pay for my education :/. Hope you guys are having better luck than I am with this

I never understand why parents take this position, especially in the US where there's no government sponsored deferred loan program; at the very least, you can give them a family loan that they can pay you back for once they actually get a job.

I'm all for the principle of "You should make your own way in the world", but when not paying for your child's university tuition means they CAN'T make their way in the world and are locked into nonvocational low-paying casual jobs, is your parenting really achieving the outcome you want?

I actually did really poorly in high school because I was lazy and didn't give a shit. Come my senior year I cleaned up my act and did really well on my SATs and ACTs and my high school counselor was surprised. I think she thought I was dumb or something. =/

Now I'm at UVM and have greatly enjoyed the experience even though I double majored. After this semester I'll have my BS in equine science and BA in English. I kind of want to go for my masters but I'm still not sure. I don't think not having a masters would affect me at all since I took English for myself and a masters in equine science is actually an MS or PhD in animal science and I'm not going to a veterinary school. I'd be doing it for myself but I'm not sure I want to spend the money, since it could be put to better use at this point in time. =/ So many decisions...

Generally speaking, Masters degrees do not give you any more education or useful skills; they give you extra reputation. Masters degrees are for opening doors in your career, generally. That in mind, you probably don't need to do a Masters now (or at all) if there's no particular job you can gain access to by having one.

Ive actually found a ton of scholarships aside from the ones my school gives out, and the ones announced there. Freewebs.com has a ton, and i know there are more websites like it. Just be prepared to write a metric ton of specific essays, since ive found most scholarships of about 1k or more require them.

I don't know, I guess my parents either want me to not go to the best college I get accepted to or become buried in student loans for the next twenty years. And my dad always says he wants to buy all this expensive (unnecessary) stuff and I'm like.. ok but you can't spare a little money for my textbooks next year? I'm planning on getting a part-time job when I start college if I can find one, but still that won't be paying for a lot.

And yeah I know from my friends' experiences that I will need a lot of essays and recommendations and crap. I just hope I can fit it in my schedule with the 4 AP classes + extracurriculars I'm doing right now. Maybe I'll get lucky and I can just modify some of the other college essays I've written for some of them =P

Another thing to keep in mind re: postgraduate stuff, especially Masters, is that a lot of employers (particularly corporations) will pay for your postgraduate education as part of a deal to keep you working for them. It's more or less the norm in law firms and the like.

Don't worry bout it. Harvard's was Feb 1st, and I didn't submit it (then again, I had no chance of Harvard, so when I heard about it, I just shrugged and went back to homework).

Northwestern and Johns Hopkins are on the 15th thank God. Personally, I regret applying as an international applicant to American universities just because of the financial crap I have to go through.

I've found that if you write one about your intended major, one about community service, and one about extracurricular activities, you should have most of the bases covered. In addition, most teachers are willing to go back into the recommendation they gave you and edit it slightly to fit the scholarship (at least, mine are since they let me look at mine before I sent them off).

I'm not for sure going to Brown. They are the first university to give me notification. However, I'm pretty stoked regardless, they have a really nice program :)

tennisace - how do you know about the pizza?
