Today, at an attempt to revolutionize the periodical, book, and mobile computing industry Apple finally launches its tablet computer, the iPad, starting at $499 for a 16 GB version.

Many people have criticized the iPad as nothing more than a large iPod Touch (Wifi only version) and an iPhone that cannot make calls (Wifi +3G version). Shockingly, the majority of reviews have been positive for what it does: A way to consume digital media (photos, music, videos, books, games) thanks to its nearly 10 inch screen. Apple has also opened up its own online book store to compete with the likes of the Amazon Kindle.

You can also be productive on the go, thanks to its Apple's suite of iWork applications specifically designed for the iPad. In addition, the iPad also gains access to the 150,000+ iPhone applications already in the app store, plus applications strictly for the iPad and its larger screen.

However, it does not have a camera for Skype calling, nor support multitasking. Me, personally, I am going to wait for the second generation model of the iPad, if I choose to buy it at all.

What about you, what are your thoughts about the iPad? For the people who went out and bought one, how are you liking it?

iPad? It's really nothing more then a huge iTouch with the possibility to add 3G and the feature of eBook Reader and a few more small details that aren't that huge. The first model won't be that much of an improvement. Maybe the second model will bring what true tech-geeks who know what they are talking about want.

Like the previous poster said, it's Apple's version of a Netbook. At least, that's what they were trying to pass it on as in their conference. It won't take over the Netbook. Even though I hate Netbooks.

Silly ipad. Not good enough to be a computer, not compact enough to be an ipod. However, it is a cheaper kindle.

Definatly wait. There will be upgrades ect that you will be angry over.

Yeah, right now it doesn't seem like it's worth the money when I already have products of equal or better portability that can serve the same functions. I don't really like the idea of it at all: it's not portable enough to fit in your pocket, so you have to lug around a bag to put it in or just carry it in your hands at all times. If you're going to do that, why not just carry around a small laptop? I dunno, it just doesn't seem like it's too great of an investment at this point.

I honestly don't see the appeal in the iPad. I'll stick to a computer that doesn't turn into a smudgy piece of shit after 5 minutes of use.

ProTip: To not appear like an Apple viral marketer, don't use buzz words like "Highly Anticipated" and "Revolutionary". Anyhoo, I have absolutely no need for an iPad. I have a desktop that I use at home, a laptop that I use at school, and a phone that I use during my commute. I absolutely despise my iPhone and can't wait to get rid of it so I can't say that I'm in a rush to buy a larger version of it running the same OS.

oh hey a touch screen paperweight

anyway i am not getting this, i already have a good ipod touch and i dont need a gigantic one that takes away from the only reason i got the ipod touch - portability

Must....get...one.

I was supposed to go to the Mac store today to buy mine, but all the crazy lunatics waiting outside (read:someone all the way from England came here to get one), means I have to wait till Monday. :(

piece of shit but i will be shocked if it isn't a success. The ipod has awful sound quality and look how well that did.

People who are getting it i would love to here your reasons for getting it outside of "its an apple product and it looks good"

Did you really need that title and opening line? I got the same wretching feeling I got when I read a high school newspaper article's attempt at "news". Ugh.

Anyway, I have an iPhone, so the iPad seems pretty redundant.

lol

the bottleneck for sound quality in an iPod is 99% of the time the compression rate. saying "iPods sound like shit" really just proves that you don't know enough about music to distinguish "shit" and "good".

Obviously a waste of money, but fanatics are bound to buy anything Apple produces and commericalizes. The only reason I see buying it is for a bigger screen for watching movies/playing games, but its so overpriced its not worth it. I'm much happier with an Ipod Touch.

Apple has the ability to release the same thing in different sizes and names and get hundreds if not thousands of dollars for it. Amazing marketing by their part.

I would say it is a waste of money, but then again it is all to the eye of the beholder. I am going to try be more open minded so if it makes the person happy to waste their money as long as it isn't harming anyone let them do it.

I think Apple is a good example of how much marketing is a part of a product. The Ipod (not including the Touch) had numerous other alternative MP3 players that did the same job equally or better for much of its lifetime, yet people chose to buy the Ipod for the name. It seems people are being sold an inferior tablet PC-thing that can't multitask because Apple has its name on it.

However, take a wait and see approach. We'll see how good it really is. I seriously doubted the IPhone when it came out and it actually was decent.

I have an iPod touch, a DSi and a HTC Touch HD.
10" screens aren't a luxury for me and my small pockets, they're a hindrance.

I have no doubts it will be a fun little luxury to have around the house for when you are bored. But $500... I could buy a new guitar for that much. And I know which one would be more useful and more entertaining in the long run.

I had an ipod and used lossless for all my music and it still sound considerably worse then similar products from sony and cowen. The sound quality with the right format is not bad but its not as good as similar products from Sony and Cowen and even Samsung, which are much less popular.

For something so popular it should sound considerably better then rivals on the basic settings and it doesn't

Fuck, I just ate my iPad, it tastes like banana.

In seriousness, anything that has a name ever so slightly related to the piece of shit that is iCarly that I am usually forced to listen to day in and day out as a form of mental torture against my will will suck, and from looking at it, the iPad is basically the reverse psychology of the old mobile phones: A huge-unwieldy brick that is probably a better weapon than what it was made for.

I didn't know Apple became the new Nintendo?

They just keep making new shit thats the same as the older stuff but different or has more space or like one new feature. (SEE: Everything Nintendo has ever made that was handheld.) Every once in a while there is one "new" product worth buying, but people are still going to buy this because "omg its Apple!!!" *fap fap fap*.

"The ipod has awful sound quality and look how well that did."

Exaggeration Fail. Its sound quality was mid-range. Maybe you've only grown up with top market Bose in your life but seriously, for audio quality you can do much worse than an iPod.

I mainly use my iPod for film anyway, it has the best combo of screen, memory and sound for a mobile films library.

In any case, the iPad is more than a big iPhone, in that its internet, iWork and iLife functionality is greatly improved. However its just not got enough raw cpu to justify its price, even if its touch screen tech is expensive it needs to have the content and right now I reckon its all flash and not much hidden substance.

The second iPad (or third) I can see being way better, having all the iPad's great display and interface options, with all the content it needs to compete fully in a tablet market.

What are you talking about man, iCarly is the best show on television right now.

it also invented the amazing "uncapitalized letter 'i'" fad, or should I say phenomenon

this thing seems okay but overpriced, which is, I mean, that's what always happens anyway, not sure why people are acting shocked about it
