The MMA/Boxing/Fighting Sports Thread

Yeah I agree with Trax. Fedor's never going to sign with the UFC and the guy's been in over 30 wars now. He's reaching his mid thirties and he's already made more than enough money than he'll ever need.

I guess his biggest challenge in the near future will be Overeem and I'm very excited about that.

Hopefully he retires (basically) undefeated and the hardcore mma fans will remember him as the G.O.A.T. of MMA. It's a shame that he'll be forgotten by most casual fans as most of them don't even know who he is anyhow.

EDIT: very excited about Strikeforce :))) Cheering for the Dreamcatcher

My theory is that he'll retire for the same reason as Vovchanchyn did; breaking his hands so many times he can't close them anymore..

Haha yeah I was thinking about that.

Fedor either breaks his hand in every fight or just goes in there and kills people with his broken hands.

Anyone else thinking Hendo is about to own Shields tonight? Only reason I'm even watching Strikeforce tonight lol...guess it couldn't hurt to check on the other matches as well.

I don't know about you but Mousasi's become one of my favorite fighters and Lawal makes a very interesting opponent for him. Not only that but you get to see Shinya Aoki fight and the undercard has some good matches too.

Incidentally, just thought I'd mention.. Shields looked the same fucking size as Hendo at the weigh in..

As I said like 5 pages ago; the size gap ain't all that big..

Mo just won..

That was like a 5 round Rashad vs Thiago, except Mo is about 50 times better than Rashad at wrestling. Mousasi looked fucking awful.

And what the fuck Yamasaki is doing in the Melendez/Aoki fight, I have no idea. Well, that was an ass kicking.. though it was pretty dodgy -- Yamasaki kept standing them back up for no logical reason.

Shields beat Hendo.. so much for that being a giant mismatch, eh Vin?

Sigh...how could Hendo lose...sigh...

Anyone else hate it when their favorite fighters get old? Hendo would have owned Shields for sure back in Pride...

Don't blame it on age; Ninja Rua and Bustamante were able to take Hendo down in PRIDE days.. Shields is just good, give him credit.

I was wrong and wasn't the only one that was. I guess you never are.

Also, it is interesting to see Shields on UFC tv during the TUF episodes. They haven't introduced him like they did some other trainers though.

Wow what the fuuuckk I went 0-3 on the main card!! Huge props to Shields and I was thinking GODDAMN when I saw them square up. Shields was just as big if not bigger than Henderson....

I've gained a lot of respect for Shields because I couldn't picture him outwrestling someone of Henderson's size and calibur. He worked Henderson and at this point Shields vs either GSP or Silva sounds great if you ask me. Aoki should take note that BJJ without wrestling ability is pretty worthless against a good opponent hehe. Big props to Shields. And yeah I also hate it when my favorite fighters get old but that's life for you.

Mousasi looked like shit and he could have finished that fight in the first or second if he become remotely active. The good news is that he's very young and will improve. Hopefully he learns to work on the most important skill in MMA, too.

MAyhem won. That's good. ;)

And Uncle Vinny don't feel bad. Trax is the guy that said Aoki was the best LW in the world. ;p I'm just kidding by the way because I thought Aoki would win too. Too much hype....I'm convinced that any good wrestler would rape Aoki.

Finally, I hate watching guys with good ground games and zero wrestling ability. They look fucking retarded crawling around the floor when the other guy wants them to stand up. Actually, I hate watching ANY fighters with no wrestling ability....there's a reason it's one of the oldest if not the oldest sport in existance......

I also had Gil Melendez in my top 5 :)

Under US rules Aoki gets hit by a few nasty things, stand ups for one (if you guys don't recall, he basically subbed Alvarez from the butt scoot after chasing him around), and the cage didn't help him either. He's much more suited to the Japanese rules and non-hyperactive referees. But yeah, Gil was the better fighter.

I want to see Alvarez vs Melendez and Kawajiri vs Aoki now..

You said something similar about Henderson as well.....

I wouldn't underestimate the guy, at least not anymore. He's one of the rare really good BJJ guys that can actually get people to the ground. Hendo did great against Silva in the first round when he actually used his wrestling and Shields' style would make him a similar match up. Except that he's actually very active on the ground.

I'm not saying he'd win but I am saying it'd make for an interesting match up unlike Sonnen who's going to get subbed. Only interesting match left for Silva at 185 in the UFC is Belfort and possibly GSP but that's unlikely.

Palhares has a better chance than Belfort imo.

Sonnen also has a better chance than Vitor (given he's a better wrestler than Hendo and he doesn't fuck around standing)..

Unless Vitor has grown some mental composure.

In unrelated news; Sergei Kharitonov is fighting Marcio Cruz at the Abu Dhabi fighting championship, should be a good fight -- I hope Sergeis legs have recovered from the beating he took on NYE though ><

I don't think anyone really has a chance against AS at 185 right now. When a guy is a legitimate threat, he stops fucking around and finishes the fight. Rich Franklin x2, Hendo, Forrest and Marquardt were all legit threats, and all of them were finished quickly and brutally. Leites and Maia showed right from the get go that they had nothing to offer Anderson...and I think those fights reflect that perfectly.

MAyhem won. That's good. ;)

He went 1-1 actually ;)

lol, that's because I like Henderson, but even he got owned by Silva eventually.

I dunno, Sonnen has the wrestling to at least engage Silva hopefully, but he could very well be subbed like you said. I dunno why everyone's saying Silva is the weakest on the ground, he has a black belt in bjj after all, so surely he can defend himself and slap a sub on someone unwise enough. Belfort, all I see Silva doing is treating him pretty much like Maia, throwing some punches his way, then just dancing about for the rest of the match; I doubt he'll want to play Silva's game as his punches would probably get him KOed somewhere. Against GSP, it really depends on which weight they're fighting at I think; at 185, I think Silva will probably flatten him, at 170 it would be a bit more in GSP's favor, but Silva still has the height and reach over him.

Back to Shields, I guess you're right about not underestimating him; wonder where he'll sign now that his Strikeforce contract is up? If he does choose to go to the UFC, he surely makes a better matchup right now I think than Sonnen or Belfort for Silva, or should he drop to ww, an eventual opponent for GSP as well.

The reason I mentioned Shields/Silva is beacuse stylistically, a wrestler with good BJJ gives Silva the most problems. No one's going to outstrike Silva and he's a lanky guy, so the one window of opportunity against Silva is to get him to the ground and go from there.

Silva never impressed me off his back all that much. He's Brazilian so obviously he has BJJ skills but getting mounted by Lutter showed where he can be beaten. If Lutter threw with power he would of finished Silva from the mount. Same thing with Shields/Hendo.

Well he did weigh way too much for that fight and it was obvious that he was drained from his unsuccessful cut.

I don't think Silvas unbeatable and the Lutter fight proved that, at least for me. Serra beating GSP made me belive that GSP can be beaten and it wasn't because he lost, it was because of the manner of which he lost in. Whenever a guy just holds his hand there before tapping or taps from strikes I have a hard time buying into their mental toughness.

GSP has the smartest gameplans but he doesn't have the mental toughness of someone like Fitch or Nog. It didn't stop him from wrecking Fitch but I think you get where I'm going with this lol

That's the same reason I'm having a hard time picturing Lesnar beating Fedor. Only way I can see it happening is with a flash KO followed by some unanswered shots on the ground, but otherwise I think Fedor is too composed to get beaten down and quit. Lesnar on the other hand is an extremely emotional fighter and would be a turtle on his back. Guys that are used to bullying people around fall apart whenever the same thing happens to them.

Thats the silva fight, he looked even worse against Franklin.

That 20 seconds was barely an exageration.

Jung just got robbed, badly.. he won that 30-27 ;/

And jesus christ, Mike Brown just got Serra'd by Manny.. I am fucking amazed.

Sonnen better lay off the trash talk (as much as I find it funny), otherwise he's gonna get the Maia/Leites treatment if he can't deliver against Silva.

Trax I watched some wec last night!!!
I got to the bar kinda late tho so I only managed to catch the co-main event and the main event. Saw some undercard fights too.

The Aldo/Faber fight was pretty badass... Faber's got heart but he was outclassed on the feet. Which makes me wonder why didn't he try using his wrestling at all.

Manny/Brown I didn't know what to expect honestly. I thought Brown was really good?

They can stop giving Faber title shots every 2 fights now. I know he's the face of the WEC but this is getting ridiculous.
