I'd welcome some advice on the Hariyama I'm building. I already know the general build I want,

adaman
tthick fat
448 HP
309 atk
201 def
-
219 sp.def
-

I haven't done the calculations for the exact EVs, but it's using all 107 points. I haven't decided upon the moveset yet. He is built for sp.def and a leftovers HP number. He is adamant for the 12 extra points it provides over careful. The general moveset I have in mind is,

-leftovers
revenge
payback
bulk up
rest

Close Combat does incredible damage without Revenge's limitation, but defeats the purpose of so much defensive investment.
Brick Break is I assume doing much less damage in the long run.

I'd like him to take physical hits a bit better than he currently does. Rest feels like a gamble until I can test it.

The underlying purpose of the build is soaking fire, ice, rock, dark, and bug attacks. And with these stats he can survive a max sp.atk modest Alakazam psychic.

Would Knock Off and Close Combat be better for my purposes? Counter? Rest talk?

I think you should pick either Revenge or Payback. I would try Revenge and Knock Off. Revenge and Payback are basically the same thing. Rest usually works pretty well. Are you goin to use him in singles or doubles?

Am I allowed to oppose your tier system in Stark Mountain?

If you mean oppose the way it is done, then you should probably post about it in Policy Review. If you are debating tiers, you should likely PM a Stark Mountain moderator regarding the Pokemon you are discussing for the go ahead to make a discussion thread.

I'm not going to debate, but I wish to oppose the very system of tiering Pokemons. I know that I'd be criticised badly, but I know that it'll be a good discussion.

What exactly is the problem with tiering Pokemon? They have different abilities, movesets, basestats... They fall naturally into tiers. Heck, even the game itself has tiers, more or less (restricted Pokemon in Battle Tower). I am not trying to criticise you, I just don't see any problems with it.

But what are the problems that you see? All you said is you want to argue, not why. I am sure you have a good reason, I just don't see it. There is no reason to not to tell us what you see wrong with it. All I was pointing out was that the tiers were a natural result of the way the game is played.

What's with the Gliscor spin-blocking joke thing? I don't get it :pirate:
Gliscor has Sand Veil, which boosts evasion in a sandstorm. With Brightpowder as well the evasion rate is 28%. Hence, switch it in on a predicted Rapid Spin and there's a decent chance of it missing.

If you intend to oppose the whole idea of tiering, or the way Smogon conducts tiering, you can. But unless you make your original post very very good I expect the mods would lock the thread. Even with a high quality post the thread still might get sent to Trou depending on the mood of the moderators. Bear in mind several people have put a lot of effort into tiering, and these people are generally among the best-regarded members - they are unlikely to be pleased if you post something that implicitly, even if not explicitly, attacks them or states their work is worthless.

In any case, provided you don't post something absolutely idiotic you're unlikely to get an infraction or ban.

NOTE: I am not a mod. You may wish to wait for the go-ahead from one.

I know it runs the same, sorry for the unclearness, i need to know the best spots for each stat ev training in hgss. i know how it works just not where the hotspots are

As far as I remember, the common pokemon of Mount Moon are Clefairy, Geodude, Zubat, and Paras [correct me if I'm wrong]. You may want to make your pokemon evolve into Pidgeotto and Ivysaur, but then that will be too much. At least level Pidgey to 15 and Bulbasaur to 16 (so it evolves) and go through Mount Moon with those 2. I'm pretty sure you can kill Clefairy and Geodude with Ivysaur and Paras and Zubat are killed by Pidgey.

Or better yet, see this.

Is it different for HG/SS? Unless I'm missing something, EV Training works the same. Here's a guide, anyway.

I won't post something meaningless and I won't directly attack anyone except one person, that too not all that badly. I want to know where it can be posted. I can't care less if it is sent to Trou because I wish to express my thoughts.

Well I Accidentally screwed up my Starmie when I was EV training it and didn't realize until now....
I need to figure out how much EVs I have spent on him, I know that his IVs in special attack and speed are 31 and I'm pretty sure that he has 31 in HP too (29 at least) but that won't matter if we find out his EVs in special attack and speed because that is all I trained him in aside from the HP. Its a modest Starmie but I looked on Marriland and it said his max special attack stat is 259 (I had to use to calculator because it didn't tell me the max with natures untrained). I did an IV battle and got the stats:
HP: 260
Atk: 167
Def: 202
Sp.A: 326
Sp.D: 197
Speed: 329

But when I take the max (untrained, 259) from his current 326 I get 67 points which is 268 EVs, obviously over the limit. This is where I'm confused....I'm guessing I'll have to berry him to 100 in special attack and speed, then just take him to 0 in HP and retrain from there but I want to check if its something stupid I overlooked or someone had this problem and can reply in a reasonable amount of time.

The whole reason I was screwing up is because I had just re-started EV training and without thinking I made Pokemon that gave 2 EVs give me 20 instead of 12 (Pokerus and item), probably a common mistake because Pokemon yielding 1 EV is 10, double 10....you get it. Anyways good luck and thanks.

Now that I learned more about this... can Nintendo spot the difference between an RNG'd Pokemon with IV=31 across the board versus someone who just used PokeSav to make their own IV=31 Pokemon?

Quite possibly. It depends how the hacking is done. In principle it's always possible to make a hack indistinguishable from a legitimate Pokemon, but there are many ways hacks can 'fail' in that respect. For obvious reasons, a degree of secrecy surrounds hacks and hack checks.

One common, though not foolproof, sign a Pokemon is a legitimate RNG is being caught in a silly year, like 2070 sort of things. This is because when RNG manipulating there is a "trade-off" between the capture year and the delay. OTOH, some RNG'ed Pokemon have sensible capture dates, and a hack could easily be given any date.

Also, bear in mind that AIUI the organisers of VGC reserve the right to disqualify you if they believe you've done ANY cheating, even if the Pokemon you are using are entirely legitimate. (Of course, the fine print probably says they can refuse entry at their sole discrection for any or no reason anyway). And with a trip to Hawaii involved, cheating in the VGC could be considered fraud - though very unlikely (not least because proof would be impossible) you could in principle be sued or even prosecuted criminally.

ok im new to this..... I still remember the days of using one lv 100 charizard for everything.... i read the intro pages and ive got to ask whats the best d/p OU wall?

Seeing as how I was an idiot and failed to RNG certain legends in the past I was considering using rebattle codes to reobtain them, the question is would they be considered legit? Especially a wondercard legendary like Deoxys from way back.

Still wondering about this issue, since they can sort of be legit, though I am very unsure if people will let me get away with this.

Special wall: Blissey, hands down.

Physical wall: It's more open. Skarmory is still popular. I believe people sometimes use Swampert too. Hippowdon can be tough to take out as well.

Mixed wall: Again, pretty open. Bronzong's pretty good.

You can check the usage stats to see what's popular, but of course that doesn't tell the whole story.

@Taruta: Generally the term "semi-legit" is used for Pokemon obtained by a cheat, but otherwise in the normal way (so IVs and Nature random or RNGed for). For battling I expect most people, even "no legal hacks" people, will accept them. But for trading people will be less keen - a fully-legit Deoxys has rarity value (despite the ease of cloning).

There is no such thing as the best wall. Okay, there is Skarmory is who is a great physical wall and Blissey counter almost any special attacker. But there isn't 1 pokemon who can counter all hits.

How 'bout this then; say you caught a regular, "off the shelf" Pokemon in any game, threw it into PokeSav and upped its IVs to like 30/31/29/28/31/28 and gave it a good nature in PokeSav.

Basically, I'm wondering if information about the IVs and nature that a Pokemon was caught at are stored somewhere else where PokeSav can't access (or something), such that a simple check by Nintendo will reveal an obvious discrepancy... of if information about what a Pokemon's IV and Nature used to be disappears when it's changed in PokeSav?

I guess I'm just conserned with someone coming along with a Pokemon they claimed to have RNG'd (now that I know it exists) but in reality hacked with PokeSav. Cuz like, I thought a 31/31/31/31/31/31 Pokemon could not exist outside of PokeSav'd games, but now I know that's not the case. Thus, I'm wondering if the fact that a 31^6 Pokemon was caught "legitly" can be maintained while a 31^6'd Pokemon via PokeSav can be discovered by Nintendo.

If you get what I mean. :D

That will be caught, due to the fixed relationship between PID and IVs. But of course there's nothing to stop PokeSav changing the PID as well (though whether it has the feature I don't know). Pokesav has access to the entire save file, there's nowhere for any other data to 'hide'.
There is I believe some data about Pokemon with an unknown purpose, which may be to help Nintendo's hack checks. But were its purpose and calculation discovered, the check would be defeated. It's like DRM - always going to be cracked, the question is when not if. From Nintendo's point of view, they only need reliable hack checks for a game until the next one comes out. It's possible the newer 4th gen games contain anti-hacking code the older ones don't, and that might be one reason VGC requires the latest games. (The others being the overt new features, and cynically to make people buy the new games).

We can also throw into the mix the theoretical possibility - I don't know if anyone's actually done it - of using an Action Replay to "lock" the RNG. Provided the cheat takes a modicum of care regarding the capture date, such a Pokemon is almost certainly indistinguishable from one obtained by legitimate RNG manipulation.
