Smogon and Gamefreak...?

About us specifically? Who knows, but they definitely are snooping around some competitive battling sight. I mean think about this for a second.
1.Gamefreak does physical special split.
2.Salamence becomes dangerous.
3.Gamefreak releases the choice scarf and ice shard.
I mean really, the choice scarf is only useful in competitive battling. All ice shard is good for is powning cynthias garchomp outside of this. Also, they gave scizor potential. Most importantly look at the vgc rules, SOUL DEW IS BANNED.
Now I wonder why they decided to do that? Hmmmmmmm Maybe they found that we didn't exactly find the item fair. I swear next thing we know, we'll be seeing a scan of krillowatt, kitsunoh, argonaut, and the whole cap gang on a magazine scan. That would be disturbing, though I bet the kids would love krillowatt, as it is pretty cute.

I'd disagree with you, Quata, on your statement that Smogon essentially hooks players and causes them to go buy the game and a DS. My friends and I are very new to the competitive scene (as you can probably tell by my post count) and the case in everyone's situation has been that he/she bought the system and games first, played them for a few years, and then wanted more of a challenge than that of the vanilla game. I honestly don't believe that the Smogon community has a huge effect on overall sales of Pokémon; in fact, I think it's the exact opposite.

and the game would be better without stealth rock (a move that single handedly makes 10+ pokes unviable for ou)
Come to think of it, Vespiquen is one of them. She would make an excellent wall, with Defend Order/Heal Order, if not for her Stealth Rock weakness.

Vespiquen would still suck. She has a very very limited movepool, horrible speed(that put even the superpowered Rampardos to NU) and she shares her typing with heaps of other Pokemon, so she has quite a bit of competition. Things like Yanmega and even Masquerain would fare better than her.

I however, would love to see Stealth Rocks go away, or to see Rapid Spin widespread as a Tutor or something.

The best idea I've heard for nerfing Stealth Rock is to have them removed from the field in a manner similar to how poison types absorb Toxic Spikes. Send in a Pokemon with a supereffective type advantage over rock types (Fighting, Grass, Water, Ground, Steel), and the rocks are "broken" and removed from the field. Damage would still apply though, so sending in Abomasnow would chip off 25% of his health (because of his Ice typing), but Stealth Rock would be removed from play (because of his Grass typing).

Having five types being able to do that might be overkill though.

Moltres and Articuno would just rock w/o sr. Arcanine would be much more viable. Charizard would be more viable... probably. Ho-Oh would be insane in ubers.

I mean actually it would be a totally different metagame, but more pkm would be viable.

and hey if you are going to get rid of SR, getting rid of roost as well would i guess make it more balanced.

Oh good, just what I need. More damn Tyrannitars.

I think that a new type would be an interesting twist to competitive play
It could have strengths and weaknesses that help balance competitive play and the 8 year olds would piss their pants over it. If they put tons of thought and work into it and Pull it off, It would be a Win Win...Win situation! thats right 3 Wins!!

gamefreak know and care about the existence of competitive pokemon on japan, and know(but care less) about competitive outside. gamefreak actually appear to enjoy making stuff for the metagame ever since RBY, they had no idea pokemon would attract teenagers and even adults when they made the pokemon stats, so a lot of stuff was overpowered.

in GSC they started to notice pokemon was becoming competitive, and so they decided to fix stuff like the uber psychic type and even mewtwo, while adding a fair amount of new pokemons, the ability to hold items and creating the special defense stat.

in RSE, they took competitive to a entire new level, adding evs, boosting the max amount of ivs and creating natures what became one of the most important aspects in competitive pokemon while making pokemons like salamence, flygon and altaria(all who are dragon types, before RSE the amount of dragons was pathetic at best) and steel types like metagross(Who are suppose to wall those dragon types using they massive defensive stats).

in DPP, they made the split of physical and special moves, added the choice items, life orb and gave some special sweepers the ability to fight back against blissey and snorlax(Who used to be broken) with nasty plot, pokemons like togekiss were made and pokemons like rypherior were added to boost a old pokemon overall perfomance(they would not bother adding solid rock to a pokemon full of weakness if they didnt cared about competitive pokemon right?), creating more powerful starter pokemons(infernape is the most viable starter at the moment if that say something) and others like lucario(in they mind, lucario was a mxied sweeper with a priority move and massive movepool+awesome typing).

they are slowly making pokemon a entire competitive game, sure they are some weak pokemons, but they exist so that little kids continue to buy the games, cause no little girl would say no to something cute like pachirisu, they make cute pokemons for kids, cool pokemons for teenagers, and competitive for everyone.

edit:like other persons said, moves like SR, spikes and toxic spikes were added only for competitive value, sure some of then went the wrong way but gamefreak had no way to know the results, so they made poison types absorb t-spikes on the switch what kinda take care of this problem(more or less), and rapid spin is all around good anyway, though they got carried away with rotom and i am 100% sure that iron head jirachi was made ONLY to troll us.

Smogon and Gamefreak are NOTHING alike. Gamefreak cares about the catridge games and directs it towards children, while the Smogon community recognize the real mechanics of the game and is consisted of mainly teens. Gamefreak hates competitive battling btw, and do the best to troll competitive battlers.

if that was true then why they did stuff like life orb and choice items? why did they made pokemons like lucario or infernape who are actually viable and used quite a lot? why they did evs and ivs for competitive players? why natures? why everything? they could have just sticked with the RBY training system right? they actually try to make pokemon competitive these days, chomp was MADE to be competitive, they went a little overboard with that one though.

Gamefreak know and care about us competitive players, even if its only alittle bit. Why else would they create the power items or the HGSS breeding mechanic for making iv breeding easier?

Yeah, they care about the cartridge games, but seriously, what kid is going to put a choice scarf on one of his pokemon? I mean they do put in competitive use only stuff.

Gamefreak gave Luvdisc its stats and movepool in Generation III, and didn't give it any sort of improvements in Generation IV. I think that answers that right there.

Pidgeot still sucks, along with Beedrill and a bunch of other pokes. Doesn't say anything.

Good points raised... but yea they could have known the results. if they had playtested better, lol.

Sidebar: why does it automatically call the person fat when you quote them? I think its really funny, but what is this all about.

It's like first, you sir, are fat. Second, this is what you said. Third, this is my response.

its actually something they put on quoting for the lolz, fat people feel offended, not fat people get mad, womans feel old and pokemons feel like snorlax.

edit:now that i mentioned snorlax i would like to add some other stuff, it look like gamefreak tried to make snorlax to be easy to deal with this generation, not only they didnt gave him slack off(make total sense, but would make him the hell of a tank) but also added focus blast and close combat, the first normaly 2hko while the second ohko, surely the moves were not added only because of him, but it look like gamefreak noticed how broken he was(blissey too, focus blast from +1 zam for example 2hko blissey, they probably though giving special sweepers a powerful special fighting move would help solving the blissey and snorlax problem).

I'm surprised noone has brought up the Battle Factory. Sure most of those Pokemon have much better sets available to them but alot of those sets are inviable in-game. Why would they promote such sets if they knew nothing about competeitive Pokemon that doesn't make sense.
Now I'm not saying that they purposely check sites like this one but it is a possibility. I would be surprised if they didn't know about it but actually having someone come and check on it is a different story.

In generation 2, skarmbliss ruled with an iron fist. So in generation 3, nintendo gave us blaziken with the perfect anti-stall stabs and stats. That didn't work, so they gave us infernape.
But you also have to remember, they don't have time to watch us. They probably don't browse through the usage stats, but they can probably look at the thousands of emails they probably got everyday that was all skarmbliss sucks do something about it!!!111!!!
Of course, these are the same people that think dragonite > tyranitar > metagross > salamence > garchomp. Thats right, nintendo thinks garchomp is the worst pseudo-legendary. cause it has the lowest attack of them all

While they may not be familiar with Smogon in particular, GameFreak is extremely aware of the competitive battling community. Head designer Takeshi Kawachimaru did an interview with G4 TV where he was quoted as saying:

The reason why we put things like IVs and EVs into the game is because we wanted to give players that are really into Pokemon battles much more to work with and much more to enjoy. We have a team that's dedicated to constantly enhancing and evolving the battle system. They have so many ideas and such a willingness to enhance the game. They're always thinking of ways to make battles more interesting. One example from this generation is that they separated moves into physical attacks and special attacks, which adds more versatility and strategy to both offense and defense. They always listen to player feedback and they battle a lot themselves. This team is the reason why Pokemon has such a rich battle system that's always evolving.
