The 1v1 Metagame

Trick is gambling in this metagame. If you trick a pokemon into setting up, you can essentially tackle them to death... on the other hand, if you trick a choiced pokemon you lose instantly. This makes it kind of similar to OHKO moves in which there is a huge reliance on luck.

Do you think Trick should be banned?

Machamp? I think it would be devastating, with a great movepool, namely Dynamic Punch/Stone Edge/Bullet Punch/Payback, it can get through sooo many pokemon, especially since Psychic/Flying moves are so rare. Although it would be great with Substitute, to beat those Counter users, and some Sleep inducers [although he is probably too slow].

No not really. Its luck of the draw really.

Trick shouldn't be banned - it's simply a good option to hit defensive setup pokes. Many Choiced pokes (Jirachi, for example) massively lose out on coverage by having Trick. At the end of the day, bulky things are going to be able to take hits from your Tricker so they can afford to attack first-turn to scout for it.

It was banned in the Close Combat Tournament, which gave rise to this thread. I've been trying to stimulate discussion but...

that's stupid. there was a battle frontier tourney in which one round was 1v1 and focus sash wasn't that great.

Lol Strong poke + strong move + no priority= Ragequit, with Sash

I am glad Focus Sash is banned, it would be easily abused, such as a Ninjask sweep, yeah just SD while they break your Sash, then you killthem wit STAB X-Scissor
Yeah real weak ._.

Actually, I'd think that strategy wouldn't be very good at all. Bug is kind of a bad offensive option, and it's not like Ninjask hits like a truck. Even at +2, I bet it misses a lot of OHKO's.

I know that I am giving an example of how Focus Sash is broken, it is. And everyone knows it, this is the Garchomp controversy all over again

I'm not very experienced in this type of metagame (is anyone really?), and I think Focus Sash could be pretty difficult to play against. Whats to stop endeavor and priority? Just to beat that you'd have to:

A) Run Substitute on everything.
B) Have a Ghost, and even then, something can always Suker Punch you or something.
C) Have a Priority move of your own.
D) Have a Scarfer and Trick while you hope they endeavor.

I could be wrong, but that seems to leave fewer options and take away from coverage potential.

On another note, Specs Rotom-a seems like it could be very good here. Beats a lot of things in this thread, and most of the things that are faster than it cannot OHKO and will be subsequently OHKOed.

Rotom-h @ Choice Specs
Timid/Modest (but Timid is probably the better choice)
4 Hp/ 252 Sp Atk/ 252 Spe
-Thunderbolt
-Shadow Ball
-Overheat
-Trick

Machamp @ Lum Berry
Nature: Adamant
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 248 HP, 252 Attack, 8 Speed
~DynamicPunch
~Bullet Punch
~Payback
~Ice Punch/Stone Edge

I like the look of that Specs Rotom set, having access to good coverage and Trick (which is really good in this meta to nail defensive pokes) as well as resisting Flying and Steel (so beating ScarfFlinchers). However, fast attackers beat it.

Machamp isn't as good as it seems. Togekiss beats it, Kingdra beats it...

Honckrow seems pretty good inthis meta. Insomnia to block sleepers, the ridiculous power of Brave Bird and strong priority with Sucker Punch.

Just thinking out loud, even with that much power, Brave Bird probably misses the OHKO on a lot of stuff. More importantly, Honchkrow is frail and not very fast, probably getting OHKO'd before it gets a chance to Brave Bird (and Sucker Punch has even less of a chance of an OHKO than Brave Bird). I suppose you might force draws against very frail things that hit you first, but I just am not feeling Honchkrow.

I must say that I find Honchkrow to be very effective. I was testing it awhile back and found it able to deal with a good amount of pokemon. However, there were several problems with ties because of BB and LO recoil adding up.

In my playing against Krow it seems as if it either:
1) Comes up against something faster, can't KO with Sucker, and dies or
2) Comes up against something slower, can't KO with BB, and dies.

IMPORTANT INFO! THIS IS ALSO IN THE ORIGINAL POST!

Weekly #1v1 Tournaments

  • Description: Weekly WiFi 1v1 Tournaments will be held on the #1v1 IRC channel. Depending on how many people enter, we will switch from Round Robin to Single Elimination. These tournaments will also sometimes be used to test the banning or unbanning of pokemon or items. And also there will be prizes!
  • Time: Mondays at 8 PM (US Eastern Time)
  • How to Join: Use anyone of these, in browser on firefox, download for Windows, download for Windows and Linux, download for Mac, to get onto IRC. Then type "/join #1v1" to get to the channel. Sign-ups for the tournaments will start at 15 minutes prior to the tournament.

We should hold 1v1 tournaments on PO, in my opinion. A lot of people don't use Wifi and it's much easier to create and test concepts over there.

I don't think that Sash is broken. It's good, yes, but...
1) Priority beats it.
2) Sleep beats it.
3) 60% of the time, flinch beats it.
4) Bulky stuff that can't be 2HKOd with unboosted attacks will often beat it.
5) Ghosts beat FEAR.
6) Taunt beats FEAR.
7) Trick beats FEAR.

It seems like TrickScarf Porygon-Z would be so good. It can Outspeed and OHKO most Pokemon, and it can trick the scarf onto anything that walls it.
