I have a feeling the anime convinced GF to romanize it as Chillarmy so they could make stupid puns in their episode titles like "Chillarmy of One!" and "Broseph, Let's Just Be Chillarmy!"

Greetings smogon users! Guess this is the new area for for talk on 5th generation. OK, Here's some stuff to think about. I wonder what will be some of the new pokemon abilities in 5th generation, Apparently they are using 4th gen abilities(like motor drive and unaware) on the new pokemon, but also with some new ones like the war-eagle's new ability(brave heart) and the dark crocidile's new ability(sand swirl). But will they increase field effecting abilities like drought, drizzle.sand stream, and snow warning, and give them to some new pokemon, who knows, they might even introduce a new ability Distortion, when the pokemon comes out, it instantly starts trick room!(Probably be a good ability for Mr.mime evolutiion, but that ability might be to strong). Anyway, one more thing I want to hear everyone's opinion on is the new 3 vs. 3 battling. If you really think about it, how will this new feature effect battling, like how will blizzard, surf, or earthquakes damage be divided. they weaken it's power in 4th gen in double battle compared to 3rd gen. Or how will follow me teams work. ever since snow teams with Blizzard became 100% accuracy in hail, the value of follow me teams went down. with this 3 vs 3. it makes follow me strategy useless, even togekiss and clefable have their limits, neither can keep taking 3 direct hits every turn. Defensive battling in 3 vs 3 will also be hindered. Maybe they have a feature that only two pokemon can hit 1 pokemon for that turn and the third has to hit a different pokemon. Let's just hope that gamefreak sets this up right.

An auto-Trick Room/Gravity/Tail Wind would definitely be broken if it's permanent since nothing can stop them once they're up (except using Trick Room again). If they only last their normal amount of time, they would probably either be broken or useless since the Pokemon could utilize them rather easily when it's sent out or be a NU level Pokemon to balance out its ability.

Drizzle and Drought have already been tested and the conclusion was that they're overcentralizing even on something like a Lv. 1 Feebas, so any Pokemon that gets them would be sent to Ubers immediately.

Many of the 4th Gen abilities seem to be given to Pokemon to power up their "signature" moves (Technician, Iron Fist, Reckless, etc.), rather than specifically because of flavor like most of the 3rd Gen abilities, so I imagine that many of the 5th Gen abilities will do the same thing.

i still feel uneasy about playing the japanese version..but i cant hold out till spring of 2011. im assuming you have played one of the others in japanese? this is my 1st time doing so and im just curious if its really any different(being harder)
I played the HG in Japanese, but I didn't get to finish it, since it was only a ROM.. and it was quite hard, lemme tell you xD

I could see them slapping something like that on some New Uber legendary pokemon. may be broken yes but you know how GF is... -_-

Errr... Gamefreak tends to UNbroken things. At least, they do to specific Pokemon.

Actually, really, I'd bet money Chillarmy isn't from "army" but rather just a romanization that happens to spell out army. Chilla makes sense since it's a chinchilla, it's got an elongated "ah" sound" like a lot of Pokemon which they usually romanize as "ar" instead of "aa" because "ar" looks better and is more differentiated from the short "ah" sound. Finally, it's "-my" because of the double "ee" sound at the end of its name. It literally has nothing to do with "army" design wise, so I doubt it's actually derived from it and the romanization they chose just happened to spell out "army".

I actually like how Chillarmy sounds and I'm sort of surprised I had never thought to romanize the name like that, and I lost sleep trying to decide how to romanize Gearlu's name.

There's a good chance it'll be the American name.

Chiller-me is bad.
Chill-army is bad.
Chill-er-me still sounds bad.

I'm hoping it isn't... Munna's good, Victini will always be a stupid name for a stupid pokemon.

I actually like Victini, it fits with the other phantom Pokemon outside of Mew (all having a name that ends with an -e sound). Celebi, Jirachi, Manaphy.

And spoilers are a good thing kids. I remember going through RSE not having a clue on ANY of the new Pokemon, not even the cover legends (I choose Sapphire because Kyogre looked cooler). A good chunck of the game I was going "wtf is that ugly thing". When my Marshtomp evolved into Swampert I was horrified :( There were few Pokemon that I actually loved upon seeing. Only Gardevoir, Milotic, Latias/Latios, Metagross, Absol, Zangoose impressed me on first impression I believe.

I was very surprised going through Sapphire, however they weren't all good surprises. I can tell you now that if I didn't spoil B/W for myself and I ran into Hihidaruma, I would be VERY unimpressed. This way, the new Pokemon have a chance to sink in. And I learn to either like them or accept them.

Shaymin would like a word with you. I don't know why everyone assumes Manaphy was the primary "phantom" pokemon of Gen 4 - IMO, Shaymin has more in common with Mew, Celebi and Jirachi, so if anything it should be considered the primary one, though tbh I'd just count them as equal.

How does Shaymin have more in common with Mew, Celebi and Jirachi? None of the latter can change formes, Shaymin can. Shaymin has an in-game location, the others do not (except for Mew in Emerald, but that event was never released iirc). Of course, Manaphy can create Phione offspring, something the others cannot. Overall, Shaymin and Manaphy are quite equal. Shaymin certainly should not be considered the primary phantom Pokemon.

Nonetheless, 4/5 isn't bad. Shaymin is just an odd case.

Agreed, but we got that Mew event in September 2006.

Chillarmy just sounds weird.........I prefer the name Chiramii.

Technically, Shaymin does match - Serebii, Jirachi, Manafi, and Sheimi are the Japanese names, Mew is the only one that doesn't match. And I also consider Manaphy to be the main 4th gen phantom. Shaymin's form changing is unique, as is the fact that it has an in-game location. Manaphy's ability to produce phione eggs is rather irrelevant, as GF needed a way to prevent us from simply hatching multiple Manaphy since it itself hatches from an egg.

And Chillarmy is...strange. I'll wait and see what the English name ends up being.

wait wait wait wait a damn second, is there a new ability called Brave heart? just to make sure. cause if there is then its oficial: pokemon is ripping off digimon 100%.

also yeah, Chillarmy is fucking weird IMO.

Nope. The war eagle thing's abilities are Keen-Eye and Encourage. There is the pigeons thing's Pigeon Heart ability, though.

There's an ability called Pigeon Heart. It prevents the defense stat from being lowered and Mamepato is confirmed to have it.

There's a list of the new abilities revealed. I don't see Brave Heart on it, but maybe Serebii hasn't updated it yet.

Edit: Damn, Trent ninja'd me.

I meant in-game location as in set location (like Flower Paradise). Mew did have a location in Emerald, Faraway Island, but the Old Sea Map was never distributed so it could not be reached. That means every phantom Pokemon besides Shaymin cannot be "caught" without a glitch.

Chillarmy is indeed odd, but it's not worse than Pachirisu IMO. I couldn't pronounce that thing properly for a good while.

wow i was starting to get scared. guess a certain person did a small little miss-translation. thanks god there is no brave heart...for now....who knows? we might get some shit like that when BW come out. i hope not. pokemon is ripping off digimon enough for 1 generation.

Yes it was, just only in Japan. And Celebi could be caught in Ilex Forest if you had the GS Ball in Crystal. So 3/5 of the phantoms have ingame locations. That's a majority.

English names.

Chiramii -> Chillarmy. Epic fail.

Munna -> Munna. Yes.

I mean, really, Chillarmy? Epic fail, Nintendo.

Chillarmy rolls off the tongue. Chiramii does not, and is quite awkward to say unless you're used to speaking Japanese. it's a better English name.

also, why is it that you only show up to complain about shit that doesn't matter? it's quite annoying. I haven't seen one post from you that wasn't over exaggerated distaste towards random shit that isn't even a problem. cut that shit out.

I sorta wish it was "Chillamy" though. Like, without the r. That sounds a lot better imo. The r at the end of the name feels awkward to pronounce.

I suppose I should throw in my two cents about certain issues coming up.

Chillarmy sounds like a Romanization, but I half expect the American name to change to something like Chillamii or something like that. If it doesn't change, I'll just nickname the little guy Chiramii, might as well.

Auto Trickroom/Tailwind/Gravity? No, I'd rather not see that. Would be interesting for Ubers, but considering that even if it lasts 5 turns that nothing would be able to stop it from setting up, I'd rather not see it. But I would like to see extension items for those moves, definitely. HandFan/PocketWatch/HyperMagnet or something silly for the names would be nice. Would help those conditions see more use. Anything'd be better than more Sandstorm and Rain Dance teams.

Anyway, I'm rather excited for how the Triple Battles look when they played one out on Pokemon Sunday. I wonder if it would be more strategic to put a bulky or offensive Poke in the middle. And would multi-target moves still be subject to the targeting restrictions? For example,

ABC
DEF

Would Rock Slide (Just an example.) from Poke D hit both A B and C, or simply A and B? Would Surf hit the same targets, but both E and F, or just E? I'm rather interested in seeing how this might change several popular Doubles strategies.

Let's stay calm, people. Anyway, while Chillarmy does roll off the tongue, it just sounds bad, IMO. Chiramii sounds better, but I guess it's just a matter of preference.
