Pokémon Black/White in-game discussion

So I`ve started White and I currently am grinding for Lenora with

Pignite, Timburr, Pidove, Tympole, Roggenrola

witht the final slot going to Petilil after the gym.

You guys see any major flaws in the team?

I had Blitzle for a bit but then I got Timburr and Blitzle was too damn slow.

Pidove sucks. Really, really sucks. Replace it as soon as you can get a better Flying-type, such as Sigilyph or even Ducklett.

I know that it is generally bad but it has grown on me and Unfezant just looks so boss I can`t dump it. Besides I`m going to use Swanna in run three.

Just looked at Serebii. Well, Serperior doesnt learn any good moves but Leaf Blade and Coil. I now need two new guys :(

Yeah Serperior really sucks, I'm not sure what GF was thinking when they made the starters this gen. I'm using it bc I plan to do a run with all three, and I've got Leaf Blade / Dragon Tail / Coil / Leech Seed. I had Slam over Dragon Tail before, and Coil helps with the accuracy of Leech Seed and Slam / Tail.

If you want a physical grass attacker, look no further than Leavanny. It is actually deceptively bulky thanks to its resists (water, ground, fighting, electric, and grass? yes please), and learns Leaf Blade / X-Scissor / Swords Dance on its own pretty early. Teach it Shadow Claw or Aerial Ace for other bugs, and you are solid. It does decently against gyms 3 and shuts down gym 5, while doing well against 2 of the 4 Elites. Only issue is the happiness evo requirement.

They're encouraging you to use a team of 6 rather than 1. Just raising 1 to insane levels will obviously make the game easier but yes the game isn't too difficult after the first couple of gyms.

After the e4 the level spike makes things difficult again for awhile but there's no need to grind as beating pokes 10+ levels higher is perfectly possible.

Overall, no more easy or difficult than any other Pokemon game to be honest.

A team of six is too tedious. One never has to use that many for a main Pokemon game (and I somewhat wish you did). I have a rotation of Stoutland, Emboar, and Archeops that I keep at the exact same levels, and it's been doing me well. Everyone is saying that the gym leaders and such are the easy part, though, so that's very encouraging! I had always wanted Pokemon games to force me to invest more mental energy in terms of thinking through strategies for battles and teams than what we've seen in the past. As well as a Pokemon game with access to every single region and gym leader...

Indeed. Lv 36 Leaf Blade and Lv 39 X-Scissor are early enough to be reasonable, but late enough to allow enough time for the happiness to build. Until then, it has Razor Leaf and Bug Bite which are pretty good early-mid game.

It also has access to False Swipe if you need a decent catcher, which is a nice perk to have.

You're not using Pansage? From personal experience, I can tell you that Pansage isn't just good for the first gym. Wait out the bad period in Pinwheel Forest. Teach it Seed Bomb at level 22, and then use a Leaf Stone (obtainable in Castelia City; go to the easternmost pier, talk to the scientist, and when he gives you three choices, pick Pansage). Because Simisage is without doubt the best Grass-type that will ever happen to you. Mine OHKO'd Elesa's Zebstrika with Seed Bomb, single-handedly destroyed Clay, and even took down Burgh's Dwebble. The fact that it doesn't get Crunch for a while and even then only as a Pansage is not a problem. Bite will do just fine until you get the Shadow Claw TM, which has nearly identical coverage. Trust me on this, Simisage is worth it. I know from experience.

And yes, I do see a flaw. It's called Pidove. However, if it's grown on you, I understand completely.

I think it's just you. I had no problem maintaining a team of six all through this game. Aside from Striaton, my Pokemon outleveled pretty much everything. They already outleveled the Elite 4 when I was battling Drayden.

Yeah its EASY to maintain a team of 6. I was still higher level than any trainers with a team of 6. In D/P I used a team of 6 and regretted it though. I was wayyy underlevel for the Elite 4 and had to use the legendary and all my TMs just to beat em. (I assembled new move sets for each member of the elite 4!) XD

You used all your TMs? I had a team of six pretty well EV'd Level 58-60s in my Platinum and STILL lost to Cynthia twice! Grrr! On topic, can someone suggest a final two team members for my first White run?
SO FAR: Leavanny
Reuniclus (if you think it's ugly I hate you)
Samurott
Eelektross

Feel free to suggest replacements, these are just ones I like.

I'm currently running a team of Pignite, Bouldore, Pansage, Panpour, Sigilyph, and Sandile, and I've swept the first four Gyms without any grinding. I plan on replacing Pansage with Joltik eventually. I have to say that Pansage and Panpour have been less than stellar, Pansage even more so, but the rest of my team has been excellent.

I just have to share this with the rest of the world. I got legit Pokerus for the first time in all my Pokemon years! I'm so happy ^___^

Nice one. A month ago, I got legit Pokerus and a shiny pokemon on Heartgold all on the same day and for the first time in my pokemon years and I was really happy as well. I don't use AR or anything so this was my first exposure to them especially to pokerus. Now I know never to use repels! ^_^.

Anyways, I just beat the 5th gym and I'm sporting this team:

lv.34 Servine
lv.35 Conkeldurr
lv.34 Tirtouga
lv.30 Joltik
lv. 34 Zoroark

Despite what everyone else says, I love my grass starter and I haven't had any problems with it yet. This is probably because I don't stress out if one of my pokemons fails to OHKO the other pokemon. I like to take my time and enjoy the game.
Conkeldurr is just pure awesome and so is Zoroark. The game has been good to me with natures.
Tirtouga is pretty meh. He doesn't really hit hard and is slow despite getting Aqua jet which doesn't really do a lot. But I guess he will be better after he evolves.

I'm aware I have a huge Dark/Fighting weakness and it doesn't help the fact that I'm planning on training a Monozu once I reach Victory road. But I really don't care.

Anyways, I'm really enjoying the game so far. This might be my favorite gen yet.

About to take on 4th Gym with the following...

Lv22 Yamask
Lv22 Scraggy
Lv23 Blitzle (Replacing before long)
Lv23 Servine
Lv24 Roggenrola (Replacing before long)
Lv25 Tirtouga

Eventually, I'll be getting a Joltik & Vanillite when I get to that stage. This is a really good game, thoroughly enjoying it. Good luck me for Elesa. Any flaws that should be addressed? Should I use the event Victini That I just got an hour ago?

I've got two badges, and skipped Castelia to go straight up to route four to catch a Sandile.

So far, I've been training LIKE CRAZY, and I have;
Hasty Sandile (Moxie!) Lv.31
Naughty Pignite Lv. 32
Adamant Blitzle Lv. 33

Yup... I need a Frillish!!!

I just beat the 6th gym, here's my team.

Lv. 37 Duosion
Lv. 37 Sawsbuck
Lv. 38 Excadrill
Lv. 39 Scrafty
Lv. 41 Galvantula
Lv. 38 Samurott

I love my team. I haven't abused the Lucky Egg too much, but I must say I've been abusing the Audinos a lot more this play-through =X.

I raised a few Pokemon until I got the ones I wanted for my final team. I raised a Lillipup to a Stoutland before getting Deerling, and I raised a Blitzle to a Zebstrika before getting Joltik. Lillipup is a complete monster, lol.

Oh, I've been abusing the Lucky Egg like a bad husband...

I must say that I haven't run into any interesting water types or Special-based Pokemon. Everything I have is a physical attacker. I'm also picky with what I choose design-wise, so something ridiculously tacky (in my opinion) like Duosion wouldn't make the cut. The lack of a rod for fishing also seems strange to me.

I'm at Pokemon League with Emboar, Simisage, Krookodile, Carracosta, Sigiliyph, and Cobalion, all Lv. 45. Was everyone this underlevelled when they cleared Victory Road? I mean, I haven't visited all the Surfing places, but how much Exp. is there in those places?

That's similar to where I was, though my team was a bit unbalanced (had a 50, a 48, and 2 40's).

Kinda funny, I too run with a primarily physical team, the sole exception being my electric spider. But yeah, I mean it's kinda odd, I know they're out there, yet I didn't pick them up for this playthrough for whatever reason...honestly since they're all new, you kinda want to make a team with everyone lol.

As for water, if Samurott isn't your thing, there's always the jellyfish ghost, simipour, water/ground toad...probably a few more out there that I'm forgetting too.

Yeah, it takes me forever to play through because I always switch out my Pokemon for whoever needs the most Exp. to level up. Seriously, I have a play time of 27:00.

Tirtouga.

Seriously, give the turtle more love. It is beast.

I had no problems using Serperior in my first playthrough. It's pretty bulky especially with leech seed (one of my favourite moves) and can setup on most things with coil/sd to ko with leaf blade and filler (I used strength for utility purposes).
Also for anyone who skipped using Lillipup. I advise you to try him at some point. He's surprisingly awesome with intimidate...

My final playtime was 47 hours on my first playthrough by the way.

The only viable move I see him getting in the future is Coil. Seriously, Servine is crap. What on earth do you guys teach him to make him viable?

The Serperior line as many others have said is outclassed by a number of different grass types. But if you're like me and just think it's one of the most badass Pokemon available in game, not all hope is lost. My Serperior was by far my most reliable Pokemon (keeping everyone on the team about 1-3 levels behind it) and sweeped the Dark, Fighting, and Psychic Elite 4 members singlehandedly while Excadrill was complete dead weight (again, about 1-3 levels behind Serperior at all times). Team was Serperior/Simipour/Zebstrika/Excadrill/Unfezant/Reshiram (yes didn't use a 6th until I got Reshiram).

The set I used was Growth/Giga Drain/Leech Seed/Return. Leech seed on the first Pokemon and use Growth anywhere from 2-4 times (if you can get away with more, do it! Serperior needs all the power he can get). Usually you'll be at pretty low health, but a Giga Drain (most likely + powered by Overgrow) should put you back at decent stats. Serperior should then be able to outrun most Pokemon in game and just keep Giga Draining itself back to full health, hitting everything that resists it with Return instead.

Obviously this isn't a perfect set up, but I ended most battles with Serperior only a little worse for wear than he started (but needing an Ether for Giga Drain). The little sucker even managed to power through Bisharp with Giga Drain since Return was also NVE - an occasion which won't be foreign to you. I was thinking maybe I should've replaced Leech Seed with Sunny Day, started with that and spam Growth 2-3 times instead, but without Leftovers until post-game and grass being the abysmal defensive typing it is, I was afraid Serp wouldn't be able to get enough Growths out before it fainted.

Shame Calm Mind isn't available till post-game and that Serp didn't have a non-grass, non-Hidden Power special move available to it (and that Leftovers is post-game too).

But you can take the easier option of just getting Simisage or Leavanny ;).

What have you been doing all that time? I barely got to 25 on my first playthrough, and that included catching mons with acceptable natures and abilities.
