Essential PS3 Games

I own a PS3, though not for too long. I don't have too many games (Black Ops, MGS4, inFamous, LBP), and I'm looking for some new ones to play. I've been looking into BioShock, Borderlands, GTA IV, Uncharted 2 and Red Dead Redemption, and all seem pretty good games. I am, however, looking for more good games. Any suggestions on your part, or games I just need to own?

Uncharted 2. Period. It's an incredible game to play. Definitely go for it. Portal 2 is really good too, but you'd probably have to try out Portal 1 before you get most of the jokes. I'm also a huge fan of the Ratchet and Clank series, though people's mileages do seem to vary when it comes to those games.

Red Dead Redemption is easily the best game for the PS3. You should also look into Dead Rising 2, Bayonetta, God of War 3, and Uncharted 2. inFamous 2 just came out so if you like the first one, it's also very good. Assassin's Creed 2, Demon's Souls, and Arkham Asylum are worth looking at once you get the first 5 games I listed out of the way.

Uncharted & Uncharted 2
BioShock
Mirror's Edge
Batman Arkham Asylum

Those four games should cost you about $100 combined if that. Amazing games that are must-plays this generation. All have pretty different styles of gameplay too so should keep you from getting burnt out.

GTAIV was a boring chore and I wouldn't recommend Borderlands if you're going to be playing single-player.

Ratchet & Clank has always been a favorite series of mine, I don't own a PS3 (or any next-gen console, sadly), so I haven't played those games in the series, but I feel it's safe to assume they're worth your time.

There's also some more situational ones. If you don't have a bug up your ass about quick time events, Heavy Rain is a very engaging game. If you like fighting games, Mortal Kombat and Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 (no, seriously this game is amazing) are worth getting. If you want a unique multiplayer shooter, MAG is really fun. If you liked Resident Evil 4, Dead Space is a pretty good clone.

Current-gen. Current-gen. It has been 6 years. Don't make me shoot you. It's current-gen!

I can get the 5 games I listed for a combined €87 at a local gamestore, which sounds quite alright. Borderlands looked fun, but I'm not sure. And GTA IV has got a 96 on Metacritic, so that sounds good...

I also checked out Mirror's Edge, it looks like a pretty fun game. Thanks for all the suggestions guys :)

Just a warning Mirrors edge may look good visually, but its absolutely terrible. Repetitive, horrible camera, and very short you could finish it in a day, doesn't really have replay value either.

borderlands IS fun. dont let multiplayer molly (aka firestorm) to discourage you. although if you can id get it for the pc.

Heavy Rain is great if you want to play the video game version of those books where you picked what you wanted to do then turned to page 53 to find out if you were dead or not (no, really, I quite enjoyed it and the graphics are stunning in HD).

Tiger Woods 12 is pretty amazing, you could sink a lot of hours into it. Wipeout HD is a blast too.. I seem to remember quite enjoying God of War III too. Red Dead Redemption absolutely sucked ass.

echoing rdr, rockstar at their finest. the multiplayer is also excellent, so's all the dlc (undead nightmare especially -- it's like a whole new game)

i'd also recommend checking out the assassin's creed series. really high production values, great gameplay, story, etc etc. the multiplayer in brotherhood is also amazing, probably the best/most innovative and interesting multiplayer i've seen in a long time. start from the start though!

demon's souls is an incredible title, but prepare to have to stick with it. it is very unforgiving, and you will die, a lot. brilliant, though. rally atmospheric, interesting multiplayer (both co-op and pvp, if you can consider there to be a separation). sequel also looks promising!

most everything out there on gtaiv speaks for itself, i think. another great title, rockstar again, etc etc

with that in mind, pick up la noire!

i hear really good things about bayonetta, and i had the first god of war which was the greatest action game in a long time, so no doubt god of war 3 is great, though you may have to do some backtracking. uncharted looks promising, but i hear the first one's not so hot?

borderlands is pretty cool, but i found the environments very samey after a while. i'd also recommend it on the pc over a console, if that's an option

lbp2 is excellent, though you probably figured if you own lbp

ico and shadow of the colossus on ps2 were two 10/10 hands down games, and i think they were remade for ps3 at some point, so pick those up if you've never played them. trico/the last guardian, the next in the series, also looks to be amazing!

haha, uhh, if you're slamming mirror's edge's camera, you're kinda slamming all fps games. how can the camera in a solely first person game be bad? it's a solid title. beaautiful visually, great music and ambience, solid atmosphere. it is pretty short, i'll give you that, but the atmosphere alone gives it replay value. as with borderlands, though, i'd pick it up on pc

I love the Ratchet and Clank series, and the two PS3 games in the series are both solid (the last one is, while not my favorite, imo the best in the series). Uncharted 1 and 2 are musts. God of War 3 is awesome (you can get the GoW collection too if you don't have those games, the whole series is fantastic).

But actually the PS3 has no games so just sell it and get a real system like the Wii

Damn, you guys are making this hard. Person 1 says a game rocks, person 2 says it doesn't. Aaaaah Well I'll have to trust Metacritic on it then :P I'll definitely look into every single suggestion you guys suggested, thanks a lot everyone :)

Well frankly Person 2 is right, though I wasn't gonna say anything. There are much better games than Mirror's Edge, I wouldn't even entertain the idea of buying it except for the fact that it's so cheap.

FIFA!

The best sports sim on any platform ever. Unless you hate soccer, you should almost definitely get it. Apart from that, ppl have stated what you should get so yeh

Most of my recommendations have been mentioned but I'll just go ahead and give +1s to Uncharted 2, God of War 1-3, Batman Arkham Asylum, Fallout 3, Super Street Fighter IV, Bioshock, Red Dead Redemption, The Orange Box + Portal 2 and Guns of the Patriots. You'll not go wrong with any of those games.

I've never actually played Mirror's Edge but a friend of mine speaks very highly of it in spite of it's average scores (79% on gamerankings) and apparently, do does Firestorm so I might just have to give it a go. And, I know it should never really influence a decision to buy a game but the theme song is awesome!

Sensible World of Soccer. Blows any iteration of FIFA totally out of the water.

My PS3 library is admittedly fairly small, but out of my limited assortment of games, I'd highly recommend Little Big Planet and Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in time. Little Big Planet is an all around charming and fun platformer with excellent replay value. To get the fullest experience however, I would recommend playing it with a friend or family member. A Crack in Time is amazingly fun, looks absolutely gorgeous, and packs along some excellent writing.

just to clarify i wasn't calling mirror's edge a ps3 essential, i just felt the need to weigh in on the title because that horribly negative and unrepresentative panning it got was way off!!

Demon's Souls, Batman AA, and Bioshock are all strong choices. Surprised to see nobody mentioning Valkyria Chronicles, which is also quite good.

I would definitely recommend Killzone 2 above any other FPS on the PS3. Killzone 3 is inessential, at least personally. I'll also back up the recommendations for LittleBigPlanet 2, Uncharted 2, Bioshock, Mirror's Edge, and the God of War Collection. Fallout 3 as well.

As far as Mirror's Edge goes, it's a good game. The gameplay is just shy of greatness, and the story does its job. It's not necessarily a game you have to try because of how good it is. It's a game you have to try because there really isn't one like it. I don't think many games can justify the title "next-gen," but Mirror's Edge is one of them. You might not think it's that great of a game, but you'll enjoy it for sure. Certainly one of my favorites.

It's very much a game that some people enjoy and some don't. The same could be said about the situational games I listed, but it's really hard to know if you'll like Mirror's Edge because it's so different. I thought is was ok. There is a demo on the PSN though, so you should check that out.

Yeah, give Mirror's Edge's demo a playthrough or two. It does take a bit of getting used to as it can be disorienting at first but it's one of my top 5 experiences this generation and if you don't like the game you are a baby-eater.
