Anonymous is invading Wall Street

Acklow

I am always tired. Don't bother me.
I'm not sure if anybody heard about this yet, and I haven't seen anybody make any threads about this, but Anonymous has announced that they plan on erasing the New York Stock Exchange from the internet next week. BASICALLY, they claim that they want to do this because they feel that the government is enforcing laws too much.

The Video

This video is the one they posted up announcing that they plan on doing this.

So basically:
What are your thoughts about this?
Do you think they are actually going to do this?
What consequences will come of this (i.e. what are the possible effects, outcomes)?

I sort of am looking forward to this. It'll be something fun to watch/read in the news.

Anonymous does not have the resources to invade Wall Street. They can't even invade Facebook right. They are honestly a complete joke.

This was my first thought:

At best they take down the website for a few hours.

Even if they are successful, what do they think that they're going to do? Hold the new york stock exchange hostage? Don't they realize that, if successful, they wil just cause the stock market (and thus everyone who invests in the market) to lose a lot of money? It never seems like Anonymous thinks through their ideals very well...

They can't hold the New York Stock exchange hostage. They are just amateur programmers. They do not have the ability shut down Wall Street. Even if they did, they should spend less time advertising it and just do it. They are just egotistic hippie nerds. They are from 4chan - that should be enough indication of their credibility.

Tell me I'm wrong, but that's what I got from listening to that video.

according to the video they weren't expressly worried about 99% of the population having laws enforced upon them too stringently--the fact that this protest is directed at wall street + big corporation implies that their main worry is of corporations and those involved with big money escaping said laws

I didn't know you could DoS attack the new york stock exchange

...this.

That being said, can anyone reality check the possibility of a Stuxnet-derived worm tearing down at least part of Wall Street's computer infrastructure? Seems a heck of a lot more practical for them.

But yeah, they aren't exactly a highly dangerous organization. While I admire the idea of making sure companies are forced to obey the law, I also know that Anonymous's tendency to boldly announce its attacks makes it about as dangerous as a ninja who jumps down from a tree, screams "WAYAYAYAYAYA!" for 10 seconds while performing flashy martial arts poses, then shouts a declaration of his name, profession, and how you're his target, and generally gives you ample time to get out a gun and shoot him.

oh right that anon vs facebook lark is tomorrow isnt it

I think it's November 5th as detailed here:

Wikipedia said:
According to the links on the post, Anonymous will take down Facebook on the fifth of November 2011.[176] The date "November 5" is believed to be attributed to the comics V for Vendetta, where the character "V" conducts his major plans every fifth of November

I just wanted to do this so I could point out how Dungeons-and-Dragons-Nerd-from-the-80s-esque these people are.

You can DoS/DDoS basically anything with an IP address, fairly safe to assume at least some parts of the NYSE can be hit. Hell if you had a fridge with an IP address you could DDoS it.

Actually, I don't think you could DDoS a "fridge" or a specific computer included in a bigger network, because the message are first sent to the router (dunno if it's the correct english word), which is a gateway between your domestic network and DA INTERNETZ, and then redirect the message to the proper computer.

Basically, you could DDoS the router but not what is after the router, feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

Turns out this is a false-flag operation by somebody (COUGHciaCOUGH) in order to make Anonymous look bad.

And people wonder why everyone hates the government

if this is actually true i'm a bit disappointed, seeing as the wall street protests have been the first real gathering of teenage and college-age kids with a cause that doesn't have anything to do with anonymous that i can think of in recent years
:/

Well, even if this is a joke, this kind of makes sense when you remember that Anonymous has just been hacking into shit to promote anarchy for the last year or so.

The problem with Anonymous is anyone can just pretend to be them, and no one will know the difference, because they're anonymous.

you could definitely ddos a fridge if this was mega man battle network

in mmbn you don't ddos anything, at most you had to walk to the fridge, jack in your little internet man, and have him go through a series of puzzles (possibly involving food and/or cold weather)

Or maybe it's simply the result of an "organization" based on anonymity and lack of leadership: anyone can claim that they are a part of the group and that the group plans to do something, whether or not that is true.

And people wonder why everyone thinks anonymous is full of morons
