Retiring a Well-Used VGC 2012 Team

Hey there everyone, this is Cypher! You may have seen me on Skarmbliss PO server a lot, and that’s because I like to VGC a lot but, have you seen this team? Most likely not, unless you caught me using it on one of my many alts! Anyways, this team is one of my many teams, however, unlike them, it is very successful. Well, I have seen some bad teams and team stealing lately, so I want to show off my team as a way to show how an original yet great team can be formed without resorting to thieving.

Delibird (M) @ Ice Gem
Trait: Hustle
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Fake Out
- Ice Shard
- Aerial Ace
- Protect

The star of the show and the Pokemon that caused me to build this team, Delibird! Delibird is a great pokemon, having the unique Ice/Flying-typing, which allows him revolutionize the metagames by hitting mostly everything for super-effective damage! Hustle is a useful ability, increasing Delibird’s attack by 50% but decreases his accuracy. Because Hustle boosts Attack, Delibird is a physical sweeper. Adamant makes Delibird hit as hard as he can. Fake Out allows my Lunatone to set up Trick Room, or have my Ivysaur Sleep Powder a threatening pokemon. Ice Shard is great priority, hitting many of the fliers and ground-types in the game before they can hit Delibird. Combined with Ice Gem and Helping Hand, Delibird’s Ice Shard is everything to fear. Aerial Ace is a great STAB move for Delibird because it never misses, which is great to use in conjunction for Hustle. Protect is obvious, shielding Delibird from any threatening attacks while his partners can attack or support the team.

Lunatone @ Sitrus Berry
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef
Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk)
- Trick Room
- Psychic
- Helping Hand
- Protect

The Trick Room setter. This beast is underrated! Seriously, try using this over Cresselia! Unlike Cresselia, Lunatone, in sand, has its Sp.Def boosted, which is very useful. Even outside of Sand, Lunatone can survive a Dragon Gem Draco Meteor from Latios! Talk about impressive! Levitate is very useful, allowing Lunatone to avoid Ground-Type moves, which would otherwise threaten Lunatone who is Ground-type weak. Sitrus Berry allows for a way for Lunatone to restore health, as well as increase its bulk. A Calm nature and 252 hp and 252 sp.d EVs increases Lunatone’s already great Special Defense. Trick Room is obvious, setting up Trick Room so my Pokemon can outspeed faster pokemon. Psychic allows Lunatone to not be Taunt-bait. Helping Hand is a great move, boosting its partner’s attack and special attack stats, which is very useful. Protect, again, is obvious, protecting Lunatone from threatening teams

338.gif

Solrock @ Flight Gem
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Zen Headbutt
- Rock Slide
- Acrobatics
- Protect

Solrock compliments Lunatone, being a physical version of it. Solrock is my speedy bulky attacker. Levitate is awesome, allowing Solrock to avoid threatening Ground-type moves. Basic physical sweeper EVs to increase Solrock’s stats to threatening levels. An Adamant nature further boosts Solrock’s Attack. Zen Headbutt is STAB, and hits Amoonguss, which is very useful. Rock Slide is another STAB, hitting Flying-Types and threatening Ice-Types for super-effective. Flying Gem Acrobatics is very useful, allowing Solrock to hit Grass-types that threaten Solrock and Lunatone. Protect is fairly obvious again, protecting Solrock from threatening moves.

2.gif

Ivysaur (M) @ Eviolite
Trait: Overgrow
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SDef
Sassy Nature (+SDef, -Spd)
- Sleep Powder
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Giga Drain

Evolite Ivysaur is very bulky, especially since that Evolite boosts both of Ivysaur’s defenses by 50%. Yes, this means Ivysaur is quite the tank, taking hits like no other. However, with weakness to the common Ice and Fire attacks, which are usually Special Attacking moves, I have maxed out Ivysaur’s Special Defense so it can tank such moves. Sleep Powder is useful, allowing Ivysaur to take out a threat by putting it to sleep. Leech Seed is useful as it allows Ivysaur to siphon the hp of the opponent’s pokemon. In addition, Leech Seed steals 12.5% of the opponent’s pokemon, which is very useful to my team as it allows my team to take out the opponent more easily. Protect is once again obvious, protecting Ivysaur from threatening moves. Giga Drain, like Leech Seed, siphons the opponent’s hp, allowing Ivysaur to recover hp while not being Taunt-bait.

Throh (M) @ Flame Orb
Trait: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 120 Def / 136 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Storm Throw
- Stone Edge Rock Slide
- Earthquake
- Protect

The one that threatens all, Throh! Guts Throh is very powerful, especially under Trick Room and with Helping Hand. Flame Orb burns Throh, which is useful becausae it allows Throh to activate Guts, increasing his Attack by 50%. Adamant with 252 Atk EVs increases Throh’s attack to very threatening levels. Due to his already great HP stat compared to his defenses, the remaining EVs is placed in the defenses, with more EVs placed in Special Defense in order to pretend Download Pokemon to get the needed Sp. Attack Boost. Storm Throw is a good move because it always does a critical hit, which is good because it allows Throh to bypass Pokemons who decides to boost their defenses. Stone Edge is chosen over Rock Slide because a Guts Stone Edge hurts more than a Guts Rock Slide. However, Stone Edge has risky accuracy and only hits one Pokemon when compared to Rock Slide Stone Edge is stupid, Rock Slide superior. Earthquake compliments Stone Edge, performing the QuakeEdge combo, which is resisted by few Pokemon. In addition, most of my teammates isn’t by Earthquake, which is useful already. Protect is obvious.

Beautifly (M) @ Focus Sash
Trait: Swarm
EVs: 8 HP / 248 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Tailwind
- Bug Buzz
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Protect

Beautifly is the Special Attacker of the team, as well as the Tailwind user on this team! “Hey Cypher, you already have Trick Room, why do you have Tailwind?” That’s an easy question. Tailwind allows my team to outspeed Pokemon that are close to the same speed tier as my pokemon. Other Delibirds will be unable to outspeed my Delibird when my Delibird is in Tailwind. Anyways, Focus Sash is to ensure that Beautifly is able to get Tailwind up. Timid Nature is to boost his speed to as fast as possible so Tailwind get up. The EVs is set up like in order to accommodate Hidden Power Flying. Like I said before, Tailwind doubles the Speed of my team, which is helpful. Bug Buzz and Hidden Power Flying are great STABs, hitting the annoying Dark-, Psychic-, Grass-, and Fighting-Types. Protect is obvious.

Anyways, that’s my team! It’s pretty awesome, if you couldn’t tell! Please leave comments, rates, and suggestions below!

This is how a RMT should look like :p

brillant team cypher mate i have only lost a couple of games with this team and i think its good enough to win the vgc 2012 tournment with

I don't see how you deal with Metagross. He 0HKOes half of your team with Meteor Mash while Bullet Punch can make Trick Room almost pointless. Zen Headbutt variants can probably beat Throh while Explosion is just dangerous in its own right. You could probably beat an Earthquake variant, but wouldn't Conkeldurr be more useful than Conkeldurr since he gets the same moves and abilities, but has more power, or are you just trying to prove that someone can win even with pokemon that are underpowered/underrated?

No. And what's a zero-hit KO?

ohh this team is a pain in the bum!!! that ivysaur makes me eff and jeff like buggery

but i think i worked out one of your alts lol!! does it begin with a

Great team, and congrats on getting to #1. This team is seriously a pain in the ass to face, I only managed to beat it for the first time yesterday against you.

Speaking of which, you are a little weak to Scizor. Perhaps stick HP Fire on something (Lunatone or Beautifly?). This is really me just nitpicking since there basically is nothing wrong with this team but...!_!

Holy BLEEP what a team! Some great inspirational ideas there, and I can see straight away what a pain this team is to face. However, you never really explained why you use Throh over other Guts fighting-types like Hariyama and Conkeldurr, presumably due to the higher defense, but it would be nice to know. Thanks again for posting this, I have to try more underrated pokemon!

Thank you for all your support!

this team looks good but did you copy it from pokemon world?

Yes

Thank you, it has won many Skarmbliss tours before, so it can beat the world

Sleep Powder, Sleep Powder my friend. Does wonderful magical things. Also, it is possible to prove that underrated pokemon can win. Look at Huy and Alphabet123, doing wonders!

Epic team Cypher!!
I haven't tried it myself, but it looks like it might work xD

It does work! All you have to do is have great prediction and mindgame your opponents.

Thanks, I worked hard making it painful to battle! Yes, my alt does begin with an A!

hmm, HP Fire does sound like a good idea, but I usually sleep Scizor to death and kill it off... Thanks for the input!

I believe Throh has superior Special Bulk, which I prefer on my team (unless it's not, can someone confirm?). Thanks, underrated pokemon rule!

Best team ever

Thank you!

I completely agree with this. The only problem is that now that you posted this rmt, everybody at spring regionals, foreign nationals, american nationals, and worlds will had this team because everybody knows it's the best. So yes, in the end it will win, yet we don't know who shall guide it to victory :)
this is the best team ever, this is the only team i will use this year

This team is great, I can't believe you didn't win one of the regionals with this. Such a good team, the Focus Sash easily allows Beautifly to set up Tailwind so you can outspeed everything and sweep.

Nice team! Btw, im not totally sure about this but wouldn't the eviolite's 50% extra defense be more effective if you moved some of the hp evs to defense?
