The First Internet War

5xppn6.jpg

[11:42pm] <drcossack>: I believe the phrase "SUCK IT" is appropriate here.

Sadly three of the congressman are from my home state. I won't be voting for them come next election!

Also alan, what do you think I was trying to tell PO yesterday? what I spent 2 hours on trying to explain that random on 4chan summed up in a paragraph lol.

I remember years back when people were calling the ebaums fiasco World Wide Web War 1.

Also one of my congresspeople is Michelle Bachmann, so I won't be voting for her in any case.

Very true. I bet some artists out don't even care if you someone illegally downloads their songs, only their record labels do.

To be honest, I'm sort of surprised megaupload has been still up this entire time. They didn't really try to hide behind a veil or anything, they did it out here in the open.

But this is what I didn't understand at first: If the DOJ can shut down a website already without SOPA, than why do they need it now, but I than read what alan posted. It's sickening that their using their own artists as leverage in this. It goes to show who really are the greedy ones....

How will boycotting sites like Amazon help sites like Megaupload? Why target a legitimate site that does its business legally?

If we want to get technical, Megaupload did business legally as well. They removed all copyright material when they spotted it or the copyright holders requested that they remove it from the site.

Now look at what happened.

I was planning on making this thread, but I'm far too biased against SOPA, or any bill that regulates online anything.

Edit: Also, what the American government did in regards to the staff of Megaupload and its creator was extremely retarded. Even more retarded was New Zealand's complacency in just bowing down and sucking the US's cock when they were ordered to extradite Megaupload's creator.

Why does the US have to pretend to be the World Police for everything? Why can't we just stop ordering everyone around like we own them?

Edit #2: "Instead, the indictment alleges that the conspirators manipulated the perception of content available on their servers by not providing a public search function on the Megaupload site and by not including popular infringing content on the publicly available lists of top content downloaded by its users."

So if they had added a search function, they would have probably got nailed for "aiding in the acquisition of illegal data goods" or some other bullshit. And since they didn't, they're still being hit for it. Don't list illegal content on your front page? That's a clear sign you're a criminal, apparently.

This is exactly what is fucking going down. If I'm an author what do I need a publisher for? I'll just release an ebook and promote it with Twitter. If I'm a music artist I'll sell mp3s and have a YouTube channel.

But you cant stop progress. Eventually these bastards will lose.

It is not the small guy (the bands, authors, etc) it is the big companies.

The big guy (corporations) wants to squash the little guy (you and I) but eventually there is going to be that one person that is not going to put up with it (Anon).

According to the indictment the government has private emails where the people arrested discussed the fact that they knew they had illegal content on their site and they were fine with it because it was making them money. That's why they were arrested. There were legal uses for the site, but the majority of users were using it for illegal purposes and the people who ran the site consciously did nothing about it.

Just saying that if the businesses restrict their products so much after they are bought, they shouldn't be surprised that people would buy them illegally for free. There's no way I'm going to pay for something that I don't even really "own". Everything you buy these days is equivalent to a timeshare. It's not really yours - you just get to pay for it. ebooks from iTunes are a tremendous example of this. You have to pay full price for them, yet you cannot even use them on any other system other than an iphone or ipad. It's just going to get worse and worse as more and more things become digital. The worst thing about digital property is that everything you buy loses its value right after you buy it. You can't sell iTunes mp3s at a garage sale for instance, while you can sell CDs.

Well, definitely, if you don't want to pay for something who am I to tell you otherwise. But if this is what the government says it is, I don't see how its a surprise.

They haven't been dropped. They've been "delayed indefinitely". So they could be back tomorrow for all we know

The author of SOPA said that the bill will be back in February, but it honestly looks like a pretty desperate attempt to pass it later. I doubt it'll get the support it had a few weeks ago.

Or attach it to an anti-child porn bill so that even if Obama has the balls to veto it'll still get 2/3rds override :/

I know I'm gonna get flamed to hell for saying this but, I think downloading movies off the Internet is ridiculous. You can't go out and buy it for 20 bucks? You don't know if those files could have viruses, or other crap that you don't want on your computer. Honestly, it's a damned if you do, damned if you don't. If you do pass the bill, you're affecting somebody that didn't do anything. (IDK how to put it) If you don't pass the law Internet piracy continues.

Supposing you aren't clinically retarded, you won't get viruses off of your downloads.

Downloaded hundreds of movies, not one virus.

You don't know if those files could have viruses, or other crap that you don't want on your computer.

Ie, this is why you use Megaupload or another reputable site. Most people are intelligent enough to look around different sources for what they want to download and, if there are any comments/safety warnings, heed them.

I realize you've been tremendously flamed for this before, in other topics, but you seriously have no idea what you're talking about.

If you don't pass the law Internet piracy continues.
Pirates are way more creative than that. This bill would do nothing to stop piracy. It would only be carried out in a new way.
And the American Internet industry would be kneeling. A bill like this wouldn't make the world sob "Oh, please America give us the Internet back!", it would just shift Internet activity away from the US. I can picture megacorporations like Google packing up, leaving the US and relocating the entire business to Canada, Europe or possibly even Asia to avoid the US laws.

An update on the current state of many file-sharing websites:

VideoBB - Closed! Will disappear soon.
Uploaded - Banned in the U.S. and the FBI went after the owners who are gone.
FilePost - Deleting all material (will leave executables, pdfs, txts)
Videoz - Closed and locked in the countries affiliated with the USA.
4shared - Deleting files with copyright and waits in line at the FBI.
MediaFire - Called to testify in the next 90 days and it will open doors. Pro FBI

Shienko Box - 100% working China / Korea will not join the SOPA / PIPA
ShareX BR - group UOL / BOL / iG say they will join the SOPA / PIPA
As a response to the shutting down of NUMEROUS websites, including many of the above, Anonymous hacked into Sony's website today and posted discographies of every Sony artist listed on their site as well as dozens upon dozens of movie torrent links.

Why does this sound like something that was severely misinterpreted and/or taken out of context? I'm reminded of the "Nature Trick"...

THIS. COMPLETELY THIS. As Doug once put it, SOPA and PIPA are basically the death spasms of special interests that are getting less and less relevant. And so is whatever is happening with Megaupload, probably...

Can you post an actual source on this? I've seen this list posted three times already on different sites and no one actually has a source other than "well I saw it on that other site, so I guess it's true".

Of course Japan/China/Korea will not join SOPA/PIPA. Those are American bills. They will affect us outside the US, yes, but the laws themselves are only valid in the United States.

Localized versions, on the other hand, along with ACTA...
