The Everything NHL Thread

Hmmm, something tells me you're willfully missing the point of the entire video, that being it doesn't matter how dirty the Canucks are, the Bruins CANNOT CLAIM THEY ARE CLEAN.

And don't rely on Sheriff Shanahan's lack of supplemental discipline as proof of a clean play when most polls done showed 70-80% of people thought the hit on Miller deserved more punishment.

I don't wanna waste any more posts on that hackjob video but I think you missed the point of my post, that neither the Bruins nor their fans care about being clean, so that isn't even an insult. I don't admire the Bruins because they are a team full of upstanding gentlemen, I admire them because they truly have a team-first mentality instead of just relying on one person/line to carry their scoring, and they don't stand for letting their teammates get pushed around by anyone.

And I would never trust a poll of fans on anything regarding buzzwords like "dirty", whether or not a Boston team was involved. There's a reason why the NHL made an authority figure to handle these situations...it might not be perfect every time but it's definitely more reliable than polling the fans.

The polls also included current players/GMs. Everyone but the Boston area thought Lucic deserved more.

Dat 3rd period goal differential. The Bruins have scored 2 goals in less than a minute 14 times already this season. Great way to end a road trip where they played 3 games in 4 days...they haven't lost 2 road games in a row all season. Even though Thomas looked way out of place at times (even moreso than usual) and Marchand looked really bad after the suspension.

On a side note, the Devils only have two wins this season when Kovalchuk has less than 2 points. They could do some damage in the playoffs if Brodeur gets hot but I don't really see them contending.

I haven't taken the Devils seriously in a while, probably since they traded for Kovy. But this year, they just seem to keep finding ways to win, it's hard to count out a team like that.

because it's not an injury you have to recover from? Look up what happened to Clint Malarchuk (and watch the youtube video if you're brave). He was back on the ice in 4 days IIRC and that's probably the most serious injury in the history of hockey.

it's a cut he's fine the helmet and visor cover it... hence the whole "he should have been wearing a helmet in warm ups" talk

in other news, Lupul and Lundqvist named ASG alt captains. Lupul on team Chara and Lundqvist on team Alfie.

don't have a problem with either

At least Boston is top of the eastern conference in dirty hits. Boston would be unstoppable if they were slightly less idiotic in terms of their physical play. Actually, they should be more like the Rangers.....just as physical but less dirty.

I like how its all East guys who are captains. Not sure why Alfie is an all-star though.

captain of city that ASG is being held in. Same reason Staal was last year pretty much.

There are two more alt captains to be named so there still could be some West captains.

Stupid and gutless hit by Ference. Expect a suspension.

In other news, Canucks manage to miss open nets. I don't even.

Stupid but not gutless. Ference played the body, McDonagh played the puck and tried boxing him out like it was a basketball rebound. He clearly tried to hold up before making contact. He was trying to get in from the side but he got beat and McDonagh pivoted. I don't think he should get suspended, there was clearly no intent to injure, there was no injury, it was a bang-bang play, and Ference has no previous suspensions in the past. If Ference was actually trying to make a malicious play he could have ended McDonagh's career from that position.

These games would be easily winnable if the Bruins would stop getting penalized. It almost killed them in the playoffs last year and it's fucking them over this reg. season. Their last two games against real cup contenders (Van/NYR) have slipped through their hands because of preventable major penalties (and I'm not counting wins v Florida and NJ as contenders). Games where they dominate at even strength being thrown away on the man advantage. Their penalty unit is not nearly good enough to rely on in those games. Hopefully they learn their lesson in time.

What was stupid was having Rask in net for a game that could have put them in first place in the conference after being in the basement of the league for so long. He did a great job as usual, but still...if I were coaching I would have wanted my best out there. Oh well, can't complain about giving up a power play in OT and losing because of it. At least it was an awesome game.

^Can you explain why, I'm genuinely curious. No injury, no intent, no history...but then again I don't know much about the NHL's history with these dealings.

I honestly don't see how he could get suspended for a longer period of time than Marchand did.

Even if there was no intent (which would be difficult for anyone to argue), no injury and no history (Ference was fined previously IIRC), the hit itself was straight up idiotic. Ference went full speed into a player who had his back turned and couldn't defend himself and drives him right into the boards. It's a dirty hit by any definition, and it was a stupid play.

Dirty hits don't need any intent or injury for there to be a suspension. Plus the league is cracking down hard on these hits so 5+ games should not be surprising.

Ference won't get anymore than 5 since he's only having a telephone hearing.

Also, can someone tell me why Vigneault is a dumbass and doesn't play Hodgson more?

Because it's on par with how the Kesler, Bieksa, Edler, Raymond, Burrows and Hansen developed? Seeing that they've developed pretty well, I'd say that Hodgson is right on course. I have plenty of issues with Vigneault myself, especially with his matchups, but he's developed many of our core and depth players phenomenally, and I see no reason as to why he should change his strategy now.

Plus, whose minutes are you going to take out? The Amex line (Higgins-Kesler-Booth) was terrific today. The Sedins were mediocre (meaning they had plenty of scoring chances today) and the fourth line already gets less than 10 minutes per game. I don't see how you can give Hodgson more minutes. Plus, his defensive face offs are terrible, so you need Malholtra's fourth line, and Kesler's 2nd line out for those.

But yeah, Hodgson has been amazing for us this year. Obviously he's not Nugent-Hopkins, but he gives the Canucks 3 offensive lines to roll out with. Off the top of my head, the bottom 6 has been scoring more goals so far compared to last year.

Also, as we're still chirping the Bruins, here's Hodgson's slapper on Thomas:

Edit: Also, LOL Hall. I quote "Why the fuck did we pull our goalie" after the Oilers got scored on the empty net.

As for Ference, McDonaugh (sp?) was in a defenseless position, Ference got him right on the numbers, shoving him right into the boards. Ference was going at a good speed without letting up, and I don't see how you can't call that a suspension. The refs fucked up though. Wasn't charging, but boarding. Saying 2-3 games for him.

A pity; the Bruins-Rangers game was pretty much a hard fought clean game until that hit.

Edit2: Right on the money. 3 games.

Yeah, calling that a Charge was retarded, made no sense at all.

You have two amazing goalies in Boston, basically a 1-A and 1-B, Rask could easily start for any other team. That's a great problem to have.

The Oilers just wanted to make Calgary feel like they were actually contenders so they could continue to dwell in mediocricy. ;) The battle of Alberta has been so one sided the past 5 years, oh well, at least Calgary is on the downslide and Edmonton has nowhere to go but up.
