The Everything NHL Thread

Man, fuck the owners. Instead of trying to make more money they just want to give themselves a bigger cut because they're all a bunch of conceited fucks who think they're more important than the people actually playing the game.

I hate this planet.

The players are at fault just as much as the owners.

heel naw, Marlies all the way. Made to the finals last year until we ran into a juggernaut and I can only imagine we'd be better with a couple younger guys down from the nonexistant Leafs.

Hey maybe I can work with this lockout thing, at least the Capitals AHL affiliate can avoid playoff chokes

also their mascot is a bears

Seems legit.

Isn't that a huge ripoff considering they were getting 57% before? Why would the players accept that deal when they are clearly getting screwed *again* by the owners? Honest question.

Hopefully they're being altruistic and just want to play hockey.
That said the players aren't accepting the deal at face value from what I understand. They see it as an excellent starting point and so are probably going to be pushing for closer to 52-53% in the coming days.

IIRC, the players are at 54% (they started the CBA with 57%, and gradually lowered it to 54%). Honestly, 50/50 is going to happen sooner or later (I mean the other sports have that, and that's "fair"). I can see the PA counter-offering with it being grandfathered in, but this is also a pretty smart move by Bettman. If the players are still asking for something "outrageous", the fans (or at least the ones who are easily swayed by the media) may start turning on the players.

Its not a ripoff considering they dont deserve 57%. 50% is generous. I dont see how the players are getting screwed when they are the ones mostly to blame for the lockout.

Facts please. I personally believe the owners are to blame but I dont go around spouting that because i dont have anything to back that up besides opinion. I would encourage you to present facts or do the same.

The owners are definitely to blame for the lockout initially (mostly Bettman), but now the tides have turned. Bettman has played this past week masterfully, and he has exposed Fehr as being completely fucking retarded and only out for himself.

When former players like Guerin and Roenick and Modano are telling the players to stop being assholes and play ball, and are calling them "brainwashed" by Fehr, you know there's a problem.

I don't understand how anyone thinks the players don't deserve more than the old white guys in suits.

It depends on what you're referring to when you say "deserves."

Legislatively and economically, the "old white guys in suits" definitely deserve it more because that's literally how capitalism works: owners run the shit and make the profits. The lockout, from the beginning, has been how the players mitigate losses, not how they make them up, pretty much entirely because the players know in our economic system, they're at a severe disadvantage (and I'm not even referring to how in tons of state level legislatures unions are actually losing power).

Morally, yes, I'd tend to agree with you that in a workers-based (players) profits league that the workers deserve more, but again, the moral issue is pretty difficult to argue in a court of law in this country. And by pretty difficult I mean mostly irrelevant.

I don't actually think anyone should bring up any references to "deserve" in this debate solely because deserving barely matters; this lockout is purely about the players putting up an offensive facade (note hiring pitbull Fehr in the first place) to first pretend like they aren't going to take it up the ass anymore (hint: they will) and second to mitigate their losses, because they will lose.

As a fan the only thing I can comment on is that I wish Fehr's strategy to do both was less reliant on wasting time / dragging it on so that I can see a full season whenever the players buckle and decide however they lose is decent enough.

So, some good news—that's not pertaining to the lockout—is the Columbus Blue Jackets will announce they've hired John Davidson as head of hockey operations. He did wonders with the St. Louis Blues, and hopefully he'll turn this franchise around. However, this worries me:
Every indication is that Scott Howson, Chris MacFarland and Craig Patrick will be retained, but Davidson has domain over all of hockey ops.
Now for some bad news:
