2012/2013 Soccer/Football thread

Suarez is a more versatile player as compared to RVP imo;he's a better dribbler,he has the vision and intelligence to drop deep into midfield so Gerrard can score goals and he is very good at bringing others into play. However,a striker's job is to score goals and RVP is a better goalscorer than him.I'd even go as far as saying that he is as good a finisher as Messi and the only reason he doesn't score as many goals as the Ballon D'or winner is due to his lack of pace and inferior dribbling ability.I agree with Nos though;if Suarez can improve his finishing he can be a better striker than RVP ever was by the time he's 29.

Suarez is a really exciting player to watch because he's fast, got amazing close control and has good vision and awareness to bring team-mates into play. He's strong as well and can hold the ball up, and the best part is probably his tricks and nutmegs to get past people. I can't remember who but some commentator likened it to watching someone playing street football with tight control and skills.

Van Persie is quite different, he doesn't take extra touches, his priority is to move unexpectedly into space to take defenders out of the game. If he can't get past someone with movement alone (ie the play is congested) then he goes to take one touch to get past the defender or buy himself space. Rarely does he ever take more than two touches. That's why scoring goals looks so easy for Van Persie, his positioning, technique and close control lets him play one touch football and as a consequence most of the time defenders just haven't got a clue where he is. Wenger was always talking about efficiency and I think that was the type of striker that Wenger was trying to train.

Suarez plays with the style of a street footballer, skillz and all, while Van Persie has been trained to be a professional goal scoring machine. Why go to the trouble of nutmegging someone when you could have taken them out with one touch or, even better, one movement. As much as I like Suarez (as a footballer) I can't agree with the arguments that he is a better player than RVP. In open play, RVP and Suarez both have vision and awareness and can hold the ball up and create space for team-mates. Suarez is faster but remember RVP played as left wing for half his career, he is not slow. I think his long gangly legs make him look slow cos he's taking less strides than stockier players like Aguero and Suarez. When they're in the box however, Van Persie is practically unstoppable. He almost has a telepathic vision of how the play is going to unfold and he gets himself free of defenders time and again. His finishing technique is much better than Suarez, in fact his technique can be counted among the best in the world, he can hit or curl or chip a ball from almost any position with either foot.

At the end of the day if you asked professional managers which player they would rather have, I suspect the vast majority would say Van Persie because he is ruthlessly efficient in his play, in a way that Suarez hasn't achieved yet. I suspect if Suarez was to become ruthless in front of goal, he would lose much of what makes him exciting now. If instead of tricking his way past 3 defenders, he took one touch to get clear and then lash a ball into the bottom corner, would he be less exciting to watch? For me both are great demonstrations of skill but Van Persie is the better player because the way he plays, with one touch, is almost impossible to defend against.

You make it sound as if Suarez's only option is to dribble his way past opponents. He has scored plenty of simple or "ugly" goals. In fact, most of them are not spectacular. His modest assist total compared to RVP might make it seem like all he does is try to dribble his way past the goal line but it's really misleading actually. Having watched almost all Liverpool matches, I can confidently say Suarez is AMAZING at playing the killer ball. The reason why he doesn't get as many assists as Van Persie is because Liverpool play without a number 10 and with lower quality attackers alongside him. Remember for RVP plays for Man utd and the gap with liverpool is (embarrassingly) big.

What I'm saying is that the whole "one touch" thing about RVP, Suarez can do it as well whereas Van Persie can't do what Suarez does. The only part lacking Suarez's game is the ruthlessness in front of goal, which I have no doubt will come by the time he is 29/30.

that one? lol it's my favourite emote of all time...!

no idea how cole gets into any toty over leighton baines

anyway massive goings on at valley parade, bradford looking like getting an unlikely win over villa!

A lot of the Barca squad are overated but Jordi Alba for the last year is the best lb and only Lahm(when he gets to play there) is close.

imo RVP is better but Suarez has a lot more potential, as in top 3 in the world. Would not be surprised if next season he hit another level and did something similar to Ronaldo in 07-08 season.

Heard that Ince deal is done. Expect official announcement soon.

i swear we've learned nothing from the dalglish british signings

18 million for sturridge and ince... I can't hide my dissapointment. These players are not good enough to be playing with Luis Suarez upfront.

isco has a 16.5m buyout clause for example. this is the kind of player we should try to sign for a club of this stature.

Rafa started Torres instead of Ba vs Swansea and paid the price.Torres is finished and if he was playing for any other club he wouldn't start a single game atfer Ba was signed. The sooner Benitez realizes that the better.

Chelsea fans

When Torres scores: Wow he's back in form maybe we don't need a new striker!

When Torres doesn't score: Omg Torres sucks just get rid of him already.

hes clearly been thinking of a move back for a while now. his performances have dropped and he had that bust-up with pardew who described it as "an argument between winners", which was pretty amusing and sad. hes been a good servant to the club so i have no qualms letting him leave (provided we re-invest) although i think the only compromise would be to form a pre-contract agreement that allows him to leave at the end of the season. nufc would be stupid to sell him for the peanuts that will be offered considering the current situation.
