Sticky X/Y Sprite Project

Hey, real quick, I'm sorry I haven't been contributing lately, the computer I use for spriting is down, and we're trying to get it fixed. I'm going to see if I can use a friend's computer... What else is there for me to do, other than the recoloring of the fixed back of Mega Blaziken?
 
Something I'd like to share,

In context with PS! devs I've been re-evaluating the future use of the sprites on our official simulator. What this means is we are taking a serious look at implementing the 3D animated models into the simulator as we have recently explored options to make their implementation cause less lag. For now no changes are set in stone, static sprites that are 96 x 96 pixels are still a requirement due to some aspects of PS! such as the team-builder. When this project started two months before the launch of XY we were never sure if we'd be able to get complete front and back model captures, and without a doubt it is because of this project that we were able to make about 90% of every Pokemon graphically on the launch day of the games on our favourite simulator (and that other one).

Regardless of what happens this project will not be ending, I have seen many sites and games make great use of our work here, and all of us at work here have revived Pokemon style spriting in a way I thought not possible. We aren't done yet.

I think we need to talk about a few Mega Evolutions. My biggest concerns are with Garchomp and Lucario. Both are edited from the original sprite. Aerodactyl can easily pull the edited sprite off but not these two. Mega Garchomp is a bulkier tank of a Pokemon who needs a custom sprite. As for Lucario, it's clearly taller in it's mega evo and just needs a custom sprite. Editing the original to make it taller wouldn't work either. Also if you reference it, it has little bend to its legs. Lucario's sprite has extremely bent legs!

Also If I were to suggest something for Delphox. Its nose is much longer than the sprites.

Fixed the claws and the outside wing on the front sprite and hopefully made the red parts in question OK for the shiny.

Layell requested that Stumpy's eye be made bigger again.

And one more thing, sorry for all the nitpicks especially how this one's gone through a lot. But the arms especially bother me. Trevenant's idles and stance have its legs laying about horizontally to its sides. It never really puts its hands up. Its just supposed to have zombie arms (put your arms out and let your hands droop down naturally) That's Trevenant, not a "BOOOO" stance. Also, it's leaves and especially head bush should have more animation.

I plan to do this with Garchomp when I get the chance. The key phrase being "when I get the chance", meaning not for a long time. But it will happen. However, the differences are not drastic enough to warrant a custom sprite, they boast a suprising number of similarities, meaning that these issues can be fixed with some edits to the body structure of the current sprite. I'm not going to bother doing the whole linking to a bunch of images and writing essays scrutinizing the details to explain why this is the case.

Mega Lucario has been brought up before, and I could probably write a whole long post about why an original sprite would be detrimental as compared to an edit, but I'd rather spare everyone the walls of text that would ensue. Your perception of "clearly taller" is incorrect, they are in fact the same height. Also, unlike Garchomp, Lucario and its Mega forme have the exact same body structure in every possible aspect. Again, I'm just going to leave it at that rather than waste everyone's time by citing every scrap of evidence that exists on the matter.

Sorry if this was a bit too harsh. I had a long, busy day, and this is stuff I sincerely do not want to deal with anytime soon.
 
Mega Luc is 4 inches taller.

I might edit those legs someday, I could and I was looking into it. But not for a while. I do think an edit would 'serve it justice'.

If you'd like to edit each frame, as I was looking into, be my guest.

QC updates to this set, mainly making everything flow better and color correction and whatnot. Fixed their faces as well as proportions in addition to that. Comments and criticisms on these guys would be appreciated.

It's midnight as I type this post, and I have to read another two chapters of Frankenstein by tomorrow morning, so I'll update this with comments and criticisms on stuff I've missed in the past week sometime tomorrow. Should be getting back to scratching soon, probably Aurorus' back next, maybe Mega Charixard if I feel like working with black tomorrow, but yeah.

Alas, what cruel fate has befallen to us poor souls! We share the same horrific ordeal; a victim of Arceus's harsh, diabolical plot.

So unfortunately, my computer is down and was supposed to be on repair the past few days. Still, no progress yet to be made. Just as when all was set and done with school works and such, came this unexpected drama bomb here. For shame, with my computer dying on me just like that! So we have the good and the bad in this not-so-recent happening.

Good thing is I finished with my Mega Kangaskhan QC; even better, in that my paranoid self have proven to be a blessing in disguise. I've come prepared for this worst case scenario having uploaded most of my art works through Photobucket and other image hosting sites. Now the bad thing...I'm afraid I'll have to hold off the Mega Kangaskhan QC for now because I didn't manage to upload it. Worse, is that my files could potentially be lost; my music, my pictures, my "movies", oh the horror! Well anyways, the current sprite looks well and should suffice. Now, some suggested changes about it:

In one week, more or less, i will continue the aerodactyl animation that i started many weeks. Then, i would like to animate mega kangaskan. I download the baby from a page (i don't remember who has create, i cannot give credit to him :pirate: ). The image is this:

Do you like that kangaskan's baby?

  • The ears could definitely be longer and and more defined.
  • Maybe making its snout a bit smaller and sharper, perhaps?
  • Don't know if it's just with the 3D rendering of M-Kangaskhan, but I think the body color should be between a pale blue or purple.
  • The back sprite in general should be more accurate. First, there are no protruding spikes on its shoulders. Second, it does have spikes but it lines M-Kangaskhan Baby's back vertically instead. There are three; the first is on its head, and the remaining two spikes are on the back of its body ending near the tail. And last, the tail should be adjusted higher, seeing its front sprite. Also, I noticed that its spiked ear on the right might be in the wrong position. It should be aligned tucking inside of its ear.
So yeah, that's about it. c:

Consider adding more dark outlines around femme cat's eyes, as they're somewhat unreadable right now. Other than that, stunning work.

Lightened the outline and fixed up the back sprite a bit:

If I wasn't so lazy busy I'd scratch the back sprite instead of editing the slightly wonky looking original sprite.

Lightened the outline and fixed up the back sprite a bit:

The right arm on the back sprite looks pretty long and weird looking. Also, can you try editing those "wing covers" to make them less odd looking? Think they are both on a wrong angle compared to the rest of the body. otherwise its good.

Today I have my third a snow day plus a long weekend so I'll try getting xerneas done some time before monday.

Edit: TeraVolt I meant the back sprite but now that I look at the front one, its not very noticeable but it could be edited as well. Just remember to edit the actual wings since the wing covers show through the wings.

Did you mean the wing covers on both or just the back sprite ?
 
Those are nice although they could use some work. Diancie's rock is a little small, Volcanion's head is too wide, Hoopa is nice although a different angle could be different. Just saying my opinions, those are still nice.

EDIT: Anyway, I made the shiny versions as shown in Smealum's Twitter. I haven't done Hoopa as the texture seems a little... idk, weird. Not sure about the shading either.

Here's my work-in-progress Diancie. The colour palette is shamelessly stolen from Quanyails's version. I was extremely suprised as to how small Diancie is, it's only as tall as Tyrogue. I used Excadrill as a size reference, as it was the tallest sprite of 0.7 meters, and I didn't want small size to ruin any of the details. I haven't found a good reference image for the backsprite yet, so I see no reason to rush into it, especially since I've got other spriting stuff to do. On that topic, Mega Scizor's animation looks REALLY good so far. I'll have that done in a while.

Also, about Mega Pinsir, I think the backsprite needs to be redone on that one too. Like with Blaziken, I think that having one with a matching silhouette would work a lot better. Too many parts of the backsprite seem too far rotated clockwise. You need to know what ANGEL to use... ........

So I heard you needed a Diancie back shot.

As for qc comments, there are a couple of things stick out at me currently. The central gem on its head looks a little oddly squished and has some high-intensity reflected light in the back that I feel could be toned down a few shades as well, as it makes it look separate from the rest of the gemstone. Aside from that, middle hair crystals behind the main gem could probably be showing a bit more, as currently they are kind of hidden. The shading on the rock half of its body may need to be moved as well, as it feels like its coming from a weird angle. Lastly, the main white of the body and the stony part of its face seems a little flat. Its coming along nicely though, and I feel this scale is probably more accurate to that of the other mythics that have been released, so that's also cool. Keep up the good work man, and I look forward to seeing the finished Mega Scizor animation. +)

princessofmusic this is super-late, I realize, but I think that the shading on Delphox could be improved in a few places. A lot of the sprite looks a little flat, such as the ear-fur and tail. The tail's shading (and maybe the ear hair too) could probably mimic the shading of Braixen and look less flat. The dress-coat-whatever could possibly benefit from a little extra shading as well, but those are my only real complaints. Proportions look pretty solid on Delphox, and I think Braixen looks just about perfect. Great work on these two.

TeraVolt Definitely looking much better. The only other thing that really bugs me about the sprite is the weird shading on a couple of areas that make it look either pillow-shaded or just a tad odd. Much of the backsprite does this by having a transition shade between two larger value differences, and the front sprite looks odd as the shading gets darker on the top of the head and several other parts of the body, making the light source feel like its coming from in front of Mega Pinsir rather than from the top-left. Aside from that, it's looking pretty good atm.

Now back to working on Aurorus's backsprite, various minor edits to other recent stuff and doing a form study on Mega Charixard.

imho none of the current Diancie sprites are working. LU's is pretty squished; we could maybe go up to around 70 pixels of height for this one. Commander F, I feel that your sprite is still too large.

TeraVolt I agree with aXl's comments, and I'll also add that the right wing on the back sprite isn't curved enough compared to the others. The sprite looks very crowded right now, so the details and proportions could probably use some work.
