Foobar2000 (Windows, Free)
Great music player, doesn't hog a ton of memory like iTunes, and it's also very easy to use. -Noobster

VLC Media Player (Windows, Free)
A great media player that accepts practicly any file format, is easy to use, and receives great critics. -Norulz

Media player classic generally lets you get a larger view than WMP. It is like a zoom in that doesn't suck as much.

Media Player Classic

Media Player Classic (Windows, Free)
Media Player Classic is the only way to go. This is not Windows Media Player 11 or whatever. This is the classic one (WMP 6 in the past I think), but with extras.

These are codec packs which both include MPC. Get both of them, and you will have access to play any audio/video file type. Supports translations, has the extra DivX/XviD plug-ins, .flv support (For those who like to save YouTube! files to your computer) and more. Streams too. There are the Realtime & Quicktime ALT packs that support .mov/.rm files (also streaming qualities) without having to deal with super lag issues, spyware crap, system resources, etc.

For some reason, the first download pack forgot QTA in its installation. It include it. Guess it was forgotten.

Well, I'm really sorry if I shouldn't be posting in these threads, it didn't say anything about it in the rules for the forum...

Do foobar and VLC media player work with stuff that you buy on iTunes?

I'm not sure how stuff you buy on iTunes is stored but if I assume if you can find the files in your computer then foobar will work with them, be them mp3 or m4a.

Also can we post foobar plugins here?

iTunes saves files as m4ps, which are, as far as I know, only playable by iTunes, since you have to log on with your apple ID to play them. It won't let anything else that I tried play them, so I'm nervous about getting something different.

Anything you buy from iTunes/The internet are most likely to have a stupid license which makes you can't play them in any Media Player except iTunes/Windows Media Player 10 and makes you feel like an idiot that you actually bought them instead of downloading from some p2p.

If you want to both support the musicians and be able to play the files, buy the music and play the files you p2p.

Ok question. What exactly does foobar have over winamp?
They seem to use more or less the same memory and have pretty much the same features. The only different thing I can see is that foobar probably supports more formats.

Okay first off, foobar and Winamp don't have the same memory footprint, foobar consumes a decent amount of lesser memory as compared to Winamp. That is also evident if one compares their loading times.

Secondly, foobar2000 has native support for a decent number of music formats and can also interconvert formats with minimalistic plugin downloads.

Thirdly, it has a built in tagger, which is something that I'm not sure Winamp has.

Then, foobar can extract files off zip and rar archives while playing, without user involvement for manual extraction. While this point might not be worth much for most listeners, there are people who find this handy.

Another, less important, point is that foobar2000 can handle large playlists of around 60000 items effortlessly.

Lastly, huge community support means there will be a large number of improvements, enhancements and plugins you can find for foobar2000.

iTunes Plus offers DRM-free tracks that will play on anything but it's a little more per track but you can upgrade them. Downloading them again works too, obviously.

It's not media playing software but if you use Quicktime on a Mac, get Perian which is the ultimate codec pack for it. This also affects Front Row.

Question: What's a good media player for linux? I liked using winamp in windows because of it's good media library, so I'm looking for something similar to that. Any recommendations?

I'll check it out, but from what I'm reading it looks like XMMS is becoming deprecated, and is being removed from a lot of distros, which doesn't seem like a good sign. Thanks for the recommendation though.

Does anyone know how you can change around the look of Foobar so that it is more interesting than just the basic one, like cloud's picture.

The only thing that's complicated about foobar is that it's so complete, that you'll probably take months before you get used to the settings.

This is mine, believe it or not it took me about two weeks to complete the preferences modifications.

The preferences list, you'll probably want to save a backup of the standard foobar look, because you'll most likely mess up at your first tries, like I did.

Anyway I don't know what kind of look you're looking for, but you might want to have fun modifying foobar's look, because the standard one really does suck. If you want, though, PM me and I'll give you my option file that saves this look, if you like it.
