Running

senior year in high school in track I was running the 100 Meter in 10.8 seconds.

That is awesome, man. I suck at 100m, but I really respect the people who can do it and that is some fucking time. Good job!
 
I'm a very competitive runner (as far as high school running goes). i recently set our high school's record with a 9:12 time for the 2-mile, which is my best event. i also compete in the mile run but it is secondary to me; my time is always generally between 4:20 and 4:30. in Junior year, hoping to get a scholarship off running to college.

yeah i know its hilarious, i typed 4:20.

Ahhhh... I have trouble with the mile. If I go all out, I can just make like 5:10. It's still an alright time, but I dunno... I get the feeling I could shave like... a lot of time of that if I wasn't smoking, but hey.

I was pretty inactive over the summer, so I'm running just over a mile every day now, in addition to wrestling and my weight training.

This promises to be a fun year blech.

Also, anyone have thoughts on Asafa Powell's recent accomplishment?
 
I'm running cross country. I am a sophmore and its my first year. I just love cross country. I like all of the girls at the races, my team(we are pretty small only like 15 people only 9 to 10 are good), and just running. Last Saturday I ran a 20:36 in the 5k but i am hoping to get at least in the 18s by the end of the year.
 
Lately I'm running about 3-5 miles per day and intend to build back up to the 7-8 range over the winter as age has caught up to me when I don't train as much.
 
I have trouble running if there's no music to run to. Without music, I get about a 8 minute mile, with music about 7 1/2.
 
my mile time is decent for someone who ran it once a year in gym class with out any training 5 mintues and 50 seconds but i cant sprint at all
 
I ran track for all 4 years in high school and did XC my sophmore and junior year. For the longest time, running used to be my life. It would be all that I thought about, all day everyday.

I started putting my plans into motion to get absolutely amazing my junior year. After a disappointing XC season, I started running 40-50 miles a week all winter long. By the time track season hit, I was running everyday and still averaging 40+ miles with track workouts and meets.

I got injured during that season from overtraining. I got all my PR's for life during the first couple of meets during my junior year. Nothing to wrtie home about; 0:55, 2:09, 4:43, 10:28 for 400/800/1600/3200. The mile was defitnetly my favorite (and best) event.

I never really took running seriously afterwards. I got my first job right after my last meet and have been struggling to become an active runner ever since. I try every 3 months to get back into running and it never really gets any easier. I wish I was still in high school sometimes just so I could still run track and XC all over again. Running sure doesn't get any easier the older you get.

Those are still great times as I never achieved those times even back in my prime days. Also back in my senior year of high school, I got injured during the XC season after finally making the varsity squad, was bitterly disappointed and can never go back and redo that again.

I have this perverse love for running/jogging respectable distances on the track, and I usually run 4-5 miles a day on it just to clear my head after class. Lately I've been getting persistent pain in the interior of my right knee that hurts when I walk and is excruciating if I try to run... and I'm not sure why. Is there anything I can do to alleviate this and prevent it from happening again? Right now it is preventing me from running at all, which I hate since that is the only time I can really let myself relax. I only do this recreationally... so I guess it wouldn't be a tragedy if I should stop altogether, but that would just really suck! Any advice would be appreciated.
 
Aeolus, I've been having the EXACT same problem in my right knee. It can feel fine all day, but as soon as I run/jump/hop, I'm in agony.

A common problem in younger runners is Osgood Schlatter - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood-Schlatter_disease. The wiki page says it's most common in 10-15 year olds, but I'm still suffering it at 19 and medically, it can last until you stop growing at 21. Which sucks. It's caused by over-exercising following a growth spurt. I don't know if that will sound right to you, but I'm just throwing it out as Young Man + Frequent Running + Knee Injury = Osgood Schlatter quite often.

If that doesn't sound right, it could just be a general stress exercise, and the best advice is to just rest it up.

Lee may be right, but I went to someone because of pain in my right foot. I'm 13 (yeah young) and the doc. said I had something in my foot that people can have while growing. But with this disease that... (ah fuck dunno english word) arises by a tendon pulling your bones or something. Well, he said it can take several months untill the pain goes away. In that period you shouldn't do much with the knee or foot, it'll just become more painfull. Especially jumping or running.

Well, this really sucks because I play badminton and I jump ALOT. Well good luck with it.
 
Aeolus, few things: oftentimes its more problematic with the shoes as the less shock absorb will stress more your knees, and definitely get your knees checked. I had arthroscopic knee surgery 6 years ago to remove a tear in the meniscus and have been pain-free since then so you may want to get an MRI if it persists. Best to check your footing pattern when running: pronation, supination, etc...
 
It's probably my damn shoes... I left my running shoes at home when I moved back to school and have been substituting my regular tennis shoes so I wouldn't have to give it up. Blah, I guess I'll just stop running until I go home next weekend to get them.
 
Wow, I didn't know so many runners hang out here.
Anyways, I'm currently a sophmore in high school, doing cross-country. So far my times have been far from impressive (18:15 5k), but it's early in the season. We've got 2 other smogoners on the team, xcpetro5678 and Sparta, both are doing very well.

Indoor track wasn't really my cup of tea (11 laps to the mile fun fun) freshman year, but I'm taking another shot at it when winter rolls around. I did a bit better in outdoor (10:59 2 mile, 4:59 1 mile), but I'm still far from the top in my teams.

Tennis shoes is a definite no-no for running, well maybe on a tennis court but not designed for distance running. Best to get shoes designed for running, and whether you need more cushion or support depending on your foot structure.

Anyways for those of you interested in getting a glimpse of how I look, There are proof photos from the recent Labor Day 5K road race in New Haven so just follow this link and select "New Haven Road Race" as the event and "4063" as the bib number. Ok so my time sucked as I attribute that to old age and poor eating habits.
 
Damn right it sucks, Roy. The wiki page says that sufferers struggle to kneel down for the rest of their life. I tested that theory. It freaking hurt. Don't kneel down.

I raced on varsity the last two times, but both were pretty bad courses (basically running loops around schools), so no new best for me, but now my one teammate is back from injury and I get to run JV on saturday. According to my coach, we have the only 3 kids capable of going under 19 minutes and he says I should win by 30 seconds over my teammates. Should be fun.

Update: the one teammate decided to set a 40 second lifetime best and leave me in the dust. Holy crap, that sucked. At least it was one of my teammates, though. I got second, and the other teammate got third. On varsity, our top guy won and the next ones were 3, 9, 11, 12, and 19. We won both team titles fairly easily. Varsity won 35ish to 70ish, and we won 27 to 120.

Yeah, since I'm really good at pacing, I pace our team's 400s around the track. Last week, we did 10 at about 90% effort, running them in 74 seconds. Between each 400, we jogged 400 so we ended up running 5 miles in total on the track (20 laps).

I ran a time trial 5k on a flat fast course on my own to try to get some confidence back after 2 weeks of just okay times. I ran the first mile in 6 minutes (way too slow) and managed to keep the pace, finishing in 18:40, without much of a kick.

Today it was hot out but on a much faster course than what we've been running. I took 17th (top 25 medal) with a time of 17:50, only 2 seconds off of a PR. I'm thinking that I might be able to dip below 17:20 by the end of the season. Our team took the 3rd place trophy with a score of 89. It was a very solid performance with everyone running very well.
 
I ran cross and track in high school, nothing special tho, I didn't love it at the time, so I took a few years off. 3 and some change years ago I started a streak of consecutive days, and have been running every day since. Also I run barefoot. I usually compete in road races all summer and finish up with a marathon toward the end of the year. I've won 2 10k's and 1 5k with times around 35-36 for 10k's and 16:50 for the 5k.

I was going to run the Chicago marathon again this year but I crashed my bicycle 2 months ago breaking my rib, so I'm just back to running more than a mile here recently.

Also I think running and Pokemon just go together.
 
Well I got a 5k race I plan to participate in this Sunday as I'll need something to get me motivated. The course is flat so hopefully that shall be great for producing a faster time.
