Gen VII: Pokémon Sun and Moon (New info Post #5834)

New legal threat in Anything Goes: Gen 1 ported Fissure Machoke @ Eviolite - use Ability Capsule to change ability to No Guard -> Win. Also all Eevees get Reflect now and Blissey can run a competent CM set with Tri-Attack. There's a few other random things (mostly revolving around Gen 1 Reflect's distribution). If Submission gets a buff it might be worthwhile but otherwise Brick Break or Drain Punch is better.

I do have much hype for this. The fact Magearna wasn't in ORAS' data but Volcanion was - as well as the Pokebank eligibility for VC Pokemon - leads me to believe this is going to be a new Gen rather than a third take on Gen 6.

Blissey generally runs Shadow Ball/Thunderbolt on CM sets to cover Gengar and Manaphy, respectively, and already has STAB Hyper Voice (although such huge odds of inflicting status is neat). And yes, the official website has confirmed this will be Generation VII.

If there is really going to be a new pokemon game (which there is) the competitive aspects of pokemon will change quite a bit, so I wouldn't worry...

Oh god please no. Ginjika are fucking ugly.

Am I really the only one who is not against it? Do you want me to show you my infinite collection of pretty gijinka art?
Ash's Greninja looks cool to me as well. I can certainly see GF pull off the "Friendship & Bonds" theme on it, like they always do.

Well to be honest, Gijinka is very popular in Japan.
But Pokemon ReBurst isn't though.

Hmm, I'm not familiar with ReBurst. At all. This is my first time hearing about it. I love gijinka though. And for anyone with a Pixiv account, I really recommend checking out this artist. They're my favourite gijinka artist and their work is like WOW amazing. I wish I could just go ahead and post the Greninja, Chesnaught and Delphox gijinkas, but I'm afraid that would stray a bit too far off topic. Also their Jirachi is just dksghfkugahkj <3 love it. Merging with Pokemon could have a lot of potential, far beyond the obvious Gardevoir.

Edit: (OMG I just checked their newest submission and their Noivern gijnka is awesome and the Mawile and and Talonflame so cute and awesome akjfkuwghhkwsh *w* please forgive me for fangasming but I cannot contain my enthusiasm)

The whole placement thing just added that one final level of complication that makes it less fun than Singles or Doubles.
I was stuck on the placement thing too.
I just don't know what to do if I don't like the current placing.

Ah, I see. That never really confused me, I think if planned better it could be better:

1. Placement Distinction: As of right now I think how it works which Pokemon is sent out if that your first is on your left, second in middle, third on right. Not only that, it changes on perspective. So I think they should mark the zones with colors (we'll use red, purple, blue). Red will be on the left, purple in middle, and blue on right, however when you need to make a decision in terms of placement the game will refer to the zones by color.
2. Position Swapping: As of right now the ONLY way to swap your Pokemon's position (without constant switching in and out) is with a move called Ally Swap and that only exchanges the Pokemon on the left with the one on the right. That should change. I think an option for your turn should be being able to have (1.) adjacent Pokemon switch positions but not lose their turn or (2.) the Pokemon on the right and left switch but they lose their turn due to the distance they needed to travel (that way Ally Switch has some purpose, it allows the Pokemon that didn't use the move to still attack despite switching).
Also, if someone only has one Pokemon remaining they're placed in the middle automatically. The battle will also revert into a double battle if both opponents only have two Pokemon remaining (mechanic-wise they'd just get rid of the middle field and the restrictions preventing Pokemon attacking opponents on the far other side of the field normally).
3. Move Restriction: As of right now only a few moves can hit a Pokemon on the far other side of the field. While this makes sense for most moves, I would still say it should be expanded upon to not limit a Pokemon. First moves like Earthquake, Magnitude, Surf, Muddy Water, etc. (moves that would theoretically effect the whole field) should hit everyone regardless of position. Next I think they should expand on moves which can hit a target on the far other side of the field (for example I think it makes sense for the semi-invulnerable turn moves except for Sky Drop. If my Pokemon is flying high or digging underground, they shouldn't be limited in who they can hit). Finally if you really want your non-middle Pokemon to attack an opponent on the far other side of the field I think it should be allowed BUT it gets negative priority for distance the attack needs to travel.

I like the idea of Triple Battles, but right now its a bit too limited which adds complications. I know everything I said sounds like it adds in more complication but I think it would simplify things as it'll give you more freedom and able to position the Pokemon the way you want them.

But I personally feel that if your whole team is on the field at once, it's kinda funny.

You know if they did Double Rotation Battles that would be possible. :P

Pokemon Sun and Moon will NOT be distributed in China.

Despite the inclusion of Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, Nintendo has no plans of distributing the games in China.
The Chinese version is merely for Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.

I suppose it's because China's laws are still too fiddly for Nintendo to handle.

Well at least GF is trying as best they can for their Chinese fans. Hmm, I wonder if this means we won't be getting a region based on China any time soon.

Masuda made a Vine and posted it on his Twitter. It's tagged for Sun and Moon.

Shh, I think he's in a trance.

Makes game based on Chinese region.

Finds out that Chinese laws does not allow to sell the games.

No one else liked China.

To be fair... China is a very controversial country in Asia, including Japan.
There's a lot of political tension among Asian countries.
China is heavily disliked by Japanese, Koreans, Taiwanese and Hongkongers, and even has issues in Indonesia.
It would be really stupid to make a region based on China.

That doesn't mean anything. The megastones in ORAS can't be found or transferred into X&Y.

There is a difference between new Mega Stones and new Pokémon. You couldn't trade over a Griseous Orb to Diamond and Pearl. Or a Rotom form. You couldn't trade the Kyurem forms over to Black and White.
There is a difference between new forms being incompatable with the previous games in a generation (and let's face it, Mega Evolutions are forms) and a brand new Pokémon (which, since it has a unique name, Magearna is).

Then again, forme incompatibility has been a thing since Gen IV even by stretches of the definition (strictly speaking, you couldn't obtain the Deoxys formes in R/S either, but trading was not a problem). Entirely new Pokémon have never been fully implemented in mid-generation before, however.

Anyway, as stated previously, SuMo represent a new generation. We probably should put that in a thread title somewhere.

I am really digging the idea that actual vehicles will be more integrated into the games.
As someone whose most recent game is White 2, I loved flying to the nature preserve and standing on the deck of the Royal Unova because it provided that interaction with things that most Pokemon games didn't have (ik ships are always a thing but you could never stand on deck and watch the landscape before.)

Well, Fissure is a ground move and doesn't effect Flying Types/levitate. And No Guard doesn't ignore type immunities. And since Anything Goes was created specifically for the great magical dragon Shenron Mega-Rayquaza...

Still, it is a major threat that shouldn't be underestimated. Plus, you simply do what you do with most sweepers: kill what counters and checks it before you wipe all your threats.

For all the people hyping Fissure Machamp: Honestly I'm holding off a bit on the hype train, only because I have a feeling gamefreak is going to find a way around it. Since Sun and Moon is a new gen, they could easily change how no guard works with Fissure. Alternately, they could hypothetically assign all RBY transfers dream world abilities. Hell, for all we know, they could wipe moves. I'm not saying "let's not get hyped for Fissure Machamp" or anything, I'm just personally cautious since I think there's a lot of ways for gamefreak to weasel themselves out of it.

Speaking of that though, funny thing about RBY: RBY is so glitched up, it has a glitch where you can basically use glitched items to modify the game (most people call it the arbitrary code glitch)! In fact, you can use this to get Pokemon with perfect DVs!

So basically, if for any reason, Pokebank converts DVs to IVs, we should be able to easily get perfect RBY Pokemon! Of course, It's possible that Natures and DVs will be randomized, or god please, maybe we can choose them. But still, considering RBY's glitchyness with stuff like being able to catch hordes of Mewtwo on Cinnabar, I think its possible we could get some good mons from RBY to Sun and Moon!

Another thing to note on the pseudo-competitive front is that we have no idea what the SuMo metagame is going to be like. Competitive discussion across generations has always been proven pointless, since even if we do get confirmation about a Pokémon's moves and stats, all we can theorize about is how it would fare in the current metagame. The metagame will shake up like crazy over the generation shift anyway, some currently awesome Pokémon will fade into obscurity, and new threats we couldn't even imagine will define what a team needs to be prepared for. Just imagine telling a last-gen player that Mawile and Kangaskhan would be among the premier threats of this generation, or Politoed/Ninetales in the generation before that. Speaking of the latter two, this gen they're suddenly obscure again. Very few of today's conventions will even be relevant any more when Fissure Machamp hits the scene. For all we know, some new mechanic or metagame shift will render it all but useless.

So please, even if something seems like it's going to have a huge obvious impact on the metagame, refrain from discussing it here. Actually, this isn't even the place to discuss such things, but also keep in mind that today's metagame will be null and void, the slate will be wiped clean, come SuMo.

In-game probably isn't going to change much, though. That largely abides by the same rules as it always has, and Pokémon that were good for in-game runs back in Gen III-IV still do the job pretty well today. Heck, look at the RBY in-game tiers. Most of the 'mons in the "high" or "top" categories for these 20 year old games still pull their weight in a current-gen playthrough (although some of them are a little below the ideal power curve nowadays). So I wager Fissure Machamp probably will do well against, say, most Gym Leaders. The lack of PP really hurts against random route trainers, though.

And it is banned in virtually all Smogon formats and will likely be banned from VGC if the Pentagon returns and it isn't applicable to the Generation I Pokémon. Really, it is just a fun thing to have that won't be used in most serious matches.

I still like to think that "Rainbow" was a hint. Rainbows are combinations of every visible color in the spectrum. I think it would make sense for it to be a combo of past gens.

That, or it just refers to the assumed tropical setting. *shrug*

I would love another tropical region. Hoenn was always my favorite region. ORAS just improved it for me.

I really don't think it will be another tropical setting… People (myself included) would think that's really boring and redundant for a main series game right after oRaS. MAYBE, Volcanion's existence hints at it?

I do hope that if this is another tropical game the characters have darker skin. Like most people who live in tropical areas tend to have. Seriously, that was one of the weirdest things they changed about ORAS.

Well, with what we have been shown (very little), there seem to be hints of a tropical setting. I have a feeling many others would enjoy it, too. For myself and others, Hoenn's Pokémon designs are unique among the others. I would enjoy more designs that are colorful and a little more exotic.

Hoenn also felt very different from any other main series games.
