I TRIED TO TELL THOSE FOOLS
I TOLD THEM POKEMON Z WOULDN'T HAPPEN
THEY NEVER LISTENED
TAKE THAT LOSERS!

So yeah, the cover legends are impressive. Especially the lion, who for now we'll call Solgaleo according to the leaked Japanese name. I could argue Entei is already a lion, and Pyroar's technically a lion, but Solgaleo is amazing. I'm definitely getting sun. Too bad Solgaleo will probably just be on par with Reshiram and Arceus-Fire as outclassed Ubers Fire types.

Lunaala is a bit hard to get used to. It looks like a cross between a goth Mega Salamence and a trampoline net. Maybe they were going for a dream catcher look. Whatever it's supposed to be, it doesn't hold a candle to Solgaleo. People speculate Dark/Fairy. That'd be interesting. My theory is that the legendary trio is based on constellations and are designed with lore behind said constellations in mind.

And about those starters

reposting here b/c I'm actually dead serious, an owlbear evo chain would be dope

Well if they do they'll have to tread carefully, Owlbear is a D&D copyrighted creature. While other games series have had Owlbear-like monsters it's just as an enemy creature or side character. One thing to keep in mind that if made into a Pokemon there might be merchandise with it (for sale) and that's where things start getting murky.

'copyrighted'

yo this ain't no beholder, buddy. the owlbear is an OGL (open game license) concept. if Paizo can do it with Pathfinder (they have), then Game Freak can do it with this. There are a few monsters that aren't OGL (such as the aforementioned beholder), but those are minimal

It'd be funny but I doubt it'll ever actually happen. Most starters tend not to throw a curveball like that, barring a few exceptions like Samurott.

Anyone else think the dog will be the regional rodent replacement? It looks like it'd be normal type.

I figured it out. We are looking at it entirely the wrong way. Using the arcane arts of, uh, art, and resizing and enhancing the image using legitimate proprietary software tools, I have determined that the following is an entirely accurate and totally infallible view of the mystery Pokemon.

Definitely bug/poison.
this reminds me how everyone thought pre-release screenshot haxorus was some sort of giant bug

I wouldn't mind a regional dog instead of regional rodent.

I doubt we won't be getting a regional rodent, same as I bet Rowlet won't replace the regional bird (still betting on that Woodpecker from trailer one) or that I bet we'll have another pika clone.

I instead see this being more along the lines of Lillipup, an early dog pokemon that's another normal type, probably with 3 evolutions (where the rodents usually have 2).

So New Doge pokemon is possibly an actual Doge or is a White-Tailed Fawn (Them running with their tails up is a commonly known distress signal.)
Part of me hopes the former, but that's probably just 'cus the Memes.

Hilariously: Corocoro kinda DID deliver on some new news in a manner of speaking. Does make me curious as to how likely the average Japanese fan of Pokemon has seen the International trailer though, if odds are low, then I reckon the footage qualifies as a big scoop to them since the Japanese trailer didn't show the starters and names as clearly as the International one.

If this is Hawaii, that could be a young Chital deer. It looks like it could be a young deer to me and Chitals were introduced in Hawaii 40ish years ago with populations still going strong. Just some speculation.

I could definitely see it being a dog too. We'll see when better images come around.

Looks like a Normal type. Hopefully it gets something interesting as a secondary typing if it is, like Fairy or even Fighting. Plain Normal is so overdone and boring at this point. Actually any single type is tbh. We need more combinations overall and less monotyped Pokemon.

What about a mono flying that isn't an event or requires trades that can be used ingame and not in the post-game or with trades/mods to be used on an ingame team.

Wanting a mono flying for ingame teams isn't a tall order honestly.

I honestly don't care too much about typing. I think Fire/Fighting is amazing in-game. You can plow through the NPCs with just a Fire/Fighting type; they're really powerful and have ridiculously strong STAB moves. Besides, Blaziken, Infernape, and Emboar are all different in certain ways. Especially the slow but tanky Emboar.

So on the subject of Normal/Flying...

I don't care. I do appreciate when they can make the Normal/Flying type bird a bit more interesting though. Talonflame has wowed everybody just by its different typing alone, but then there's also Gale Wings (which I despise facing competitively). Staraptor for the longest time managed to stick out as the cooler Normal/Flying type. It never had much going for it than an interesting design and a good movepool, as well as a decent Intimidate ability.

With the way they have been spicing up previous Normal/Flying Pokemon by giving the likes of Swellow Guts and Boomburst and Mega Evolving Pidgeot, I expect something at least cool. I don't want this one being forgotten like Noctowl and Unfezant.

Swellow always had guts tho.
Noctowl... imo has always been one of the coolest. It was one of the only two-stages, it was defensively orientated with psychic moves as opposed to every other bird, it could only be found at night for the most part, and it was an Owl which sticks out more than the other birds. It just kinda sucked in terms of stats unfortunately.
Unfezant is crap though. It's two claims to fame are gender differences and wish as an egg move. Whoop.

Also, yeah, fire/fighting is an amazing typing. I don't think anyone's gonna dispute that; Blaziken and Infernape are incredible in-game and arguably Infernape is the best in-game starter there's ever been. But as much as I like something I'd eventually like to have something different. If it's the same and it works? Cool... but if it's new and interesting, that's something I'd prefer.
