Pokemon Of The Year: Your Picks and Predictions

Guess I could also explain the reasoning behind mine:

Gen 1:
Spr_1b_006.png
Charizard: Was my first Starter, funny enough Blue version was my first Pokemon game. However, while I knew the little blue turtle would evolve to have cannons on its back (which is why my brother picked it), my focus was on the lizard with the flaming tail that'll evolve into a winged dragon with a flaming tail.

Gen 2:
Spr_2s_214.png
Heracross: Was a bit of a tough pick but I always had a small interest with Heracross. I think it was probably thanks to the anime, especially its battle with Scizor and tossing Scizor with its horn (which I thought was it using Megahorn but according to Bulbapedia it was Horn Attack). Plus Bug/Fighting is a pretty neat combination and came with a signature move in Megahorn which was a powerful Bug-type move (something notable back then as one reason Psychic-types were so strong was because there was no strong Bug-type moves).

Gen 3:
Spr_3r_359.png
Absol: Similar with Heracross, another tough choice but had a small interest with Absol. It just looks cool, a predator that attacks via the scythe attached to its head or its blade tail. It also had nice color balance, while most other Pokemon were brightly colored, Absol has pure white fur which gave way in spots for pitch black skin or sharp blades/claws.

Gen 4:
Spr_4d_405_m.png
Luxray: Tough choice, small interest with Luxray (sensing a pattern?). Actually I was considering Lucario as I do like it too... but when looking through all the Gen IV options once I saw Luxray I felt more drawn to it then Lucario. It's an electric lion that has x-ray vision, awesome! It's ruffled hair also made it look wild, like its ready to pounce. If you can't tell by now I more like the cool and fiercer looking Pokemon.

Gen 5:
Spr_5b_628.png
Braviary: When they made a region based on the US one Pokemon I wanted was on based on the bald eagle, and I got it! And it looks great, a big bird of prey with Native American war bonnet. How more American can you get?

Gen 6:
715Noivern.png
Noivern: I like Noivern for the few subversions it does (and because it looks cool). First off it's definitely a bat Pokemon but it's also a dragon which is an interesting combination (we've had lizards, dinosaurs, and birds being dragons but I haven't heard of a bat dragon). Also it's first Type is Flying with its second Type being Dragon, a small novelty that doesn't really mean much in the long run but I like it cause it does explain why it looks more bat-like with dragon inspirations then the other way around.

Gen 7:
778Mimikyu.png
Mimikyu: I think I remember not liking Mimikyu the first time I saw it. "Really, GF? It looks like a two year old drew this Pokemon". Then I learned what it was about and my heart sank. However I think what finally really sold Mimikyu to me was Pokemon Company making a song just for it where it sings about it not being Pikachu but wants to be friends because it's lonely (then in the anime Jessie caught one which had a massive hatred toward Pikachu and it was by far one of their most competent fighters even if it let its hatred get the better of it).

Gen 8:
849Toxtricity.png
Toxtricity: I didn't really know what to think of it when I first saw it from the leak. I did think its Typing was pretty cool but wasn't sure if I would use one. Then I got a Toxel via the Daycare and, well, I guess I would use it afterall. Yamper wasn't really impressing me and Poison was a useful Type to have if you want to wear down the opponent so fit into my team. And I took it all the way to the League, it's still on my team now as its surprisingly versatile and hits hard with its Overdrive. I could take or leave the gimmick, it's cool at first but when I learned my Low Key Toxtricity didn't learn Venoshock so had to grind in the Wild Area until I got the Sludge Bomb TR irked me a bit. But hey, it did mean I taught my Toxtricity a more powerful move so worked out in the long run. Plus you gotta love it's animations where it's playing air guitar :). ROCK OUT!

My picks: Butterfree, Ampharos, Absol/Rayquaza, Lucario/Arceus, Zoroark, Greninja, Kartana, Duraludon.

My prediction:

Gen 1: Let’s talk reality. Butterfree will not win. Charizard seems like an obvious winner. And I like Charizard but I think it doesn’t need any more spotlight. So, I don’t want Charizard to win. Although it seems optimistic, I think there is a slight chance that Charizard will not win. And that’s because of the heavy competition in Kanto. Pikachu and Mewtwo are really strong competitors. Let’s hope Gengar, Gyarados, Dragonite and Snorlax can snatch away a few votes too so that some other Pokemon can come to the limelight.

Gen 2: Gen 2 has a low number of Pokemon but that actually increases the chance of the winner coming from this region. Ampharos, Steelix, Tyranitar, Lugia, Entei, Ho-oh all are good Pokemon. One of them might surprise everyone.

Gen 3: “Hoenn is my home”. Most of the best Pokemon come from this region. If The Pokemon Company let me vote for just 10 different Pokemon instead of one from every region, 8 of them will be from Hoenn. But unfortunately that’s not the case. And if I’m right, the votes of Hoenn will be distributed almost equally among Treecko, Grovyle, Sceptile, Blaziken, Mudkip, Swampert, Gardevoir, Slaking, Aggron, Flygon, Milotic, Salamence, Metagross and Absol (My personal favorite non-legendary). Plus, the Legendaries of this region are near perfect! Because of too many competitors, the Pokemon of this region have a low chance of winning. I’ll be very happy if I come out wrong.

Gen 4: Lucario seems like an obvious choice but Infernape, Darkrai, Luxray, Garchomp, Giratina and Arceus will give it a strong run for its money.

Gen 5: This is the most skip-able generation. The only “okay” Pokemon are Krookodile, Haxorus, Chandelure, Blitzle, Genesect and Kyurem. But none of these are that strong competitors as most people will just skip this region. If the winner miraculously comes from this region, it should be Zoroark.

Gen 6: Okay, here’s my bet. Greninja has the best chance to defeat Charizard (Yes, I know Ash’s Greninja also had a great chance to defeat Alain’s Charizard but it failed). Jokes aside, Greninja is a popular Pokemon. So very few people will skip this region. But on the other hand, it has almost no competition in Kalos. So, a large number of people will vote for Greninja. And that’s the reason I picked Greninja as the dark horse of this competition (It’s also a dark type).

Gen 7 and 8: These Pokemon are new. So they are not that popular. Lycanroc, Mimikyu, Golisopod, Corviknight, Dragapult and Alolan Marowak are good but I think not good enough.

Here are my choices. I'll go with three different categories for each region: Regular, Starter and Legendary/Mythical. I'll also go with a separate category for the Ultra Beasts under Alola. I know you can only vote for one, and the ones I have voted for so far are the "Regular" ones, but I might vote for all the others too on different days. I have my Regular and Legendary/Mythical choices dispayed in my signature so they might be obvious already.

I am not including the following: regional variants, Megas, Gigantamax forms, Meltan/Melmetal or new Pokémon that aren't in the games yet. I'll write a short explanation for all of my choices but not for my honorable mentions because that would take too much time (there are a lot of Pokémon that I like).

Kanto
Regular: Alakazam
Abra was always one of my childhood favorites. When I grew older and learned that the fully evolved form was pretty much always the best, I grew to like Alakazam. This was during Gen 3. I really like it's high Sp.att and Speed, it is really powerful. It also has a great design, it has even got a moustache which is awesome.
Starter: Venusaur
All three Kanto starters have been my favorites at various points, but Venusaur has been my current favorite since Gen 3. I like its concept, it manages to combine animal and plant really well. I have had great success with it when I have used it in the games too.
Legendary/Mythical: Moltres
Like the previous two, this one became my favorite during Gen 3. Now that I look back at it, I guess it is a bit weird that I started liking all of my current favorites from Kanto during Gen 3, but that's how it is. I like Moltres, it is a cool phoenix-bird.

Honorable mentions:
Regular: Pidgeotto, Raichu, Primeape, Slowbro, Farfetch'd, Dodrio, Gengar, Krabby, Hitmonlee, Starmie, Snorlax, Dragonite, Vaporeon, Jolteon
Starter: Blastoise, Charmeleon
Legendary/Mythical: Zapdos, Mewtwo

Johto
Regular: Ledian
While it isn't very good in battle (I know because I have actually used it), I have always loved its design. I also have a memory from when I played Silver as a kid and spent a whole day training a Ledyba to evolve into Ledian, which is another reason.
Starter: Typhlosion
I have always had great success with the Cyndaquil line when I used it in the Johto games. I like their design too, especially how they can make their flames appear without having them being visible at all times. Feraligatr was my favorite as a kid but it didn't work that well for me when I used it in SoulSilver, so it is not my favorite anymore.
Legendary/Mythical: Suicune
Such an elegant Pokémon, it has an amazing design. I have used it to great success in many teams and it is also the mascot of Crystal, which is my favorite Johto game.

Honorable mentions:
Regular: Lanturn, Ampharos, Bellossom, Azumarill, Politoed, Espeon, Misdreavus, Scizor, Sneasel, Corsola, Houndoom, Kingdra, Mantine, Donphan, Porygon2, Smeargle, Hitmontop, Tyranitar
Starter: Feraligatr
Legendary/Mythical: Raikou, Lugia, Ho-Oh

Hoenn
Regular: Manectric
Choosing a favorite from Hoenn isn't the easiest since I think there are many great ones but few that stand out above the rest. But in the end, I'm going with Manectric. It has always been one of my favorites. I used for the first time I used it in Ruby and then I have used it in several other games too.
Starter: Swampert
I have always liked it ever since I first used it in Ruby. The Mudkip line has always worked well for me on my in-game teams in R/S/E and Omega Ruby, and I have had success with it in other games too.
Legendary/Mythical: Latias
One of the cutest Pokémon ever, it has always been my favorite Hoenn legend ever since I first saw it. I remember that I thought it could be obtained in Ruby but that required an Eon Ticket which I never got... fortunately, it could be caught in Sapphire and Emerald instead.

Honorable mentions:
Regular: Ludicolo, Swellow, Pelipper, Breloom, Slaking, Ninjask, Exploud, Skitty, Mawile, Aggron, Medicham, Camerupt, Altaria, Zangoose, Claydol, Cradily, Milotic, Tropius, Absol, Walrein, Huntail, Gorebyss, Salamence, Metagross
Starter: Blaziken, Sceptile
Legendary/Mythical: Latios, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Groudon, Kyogre, Rayquaza

Sinnoh
Regular: Garchomp
The land shark. Garchomp has worked well for me on so many different teams, I like how it is strong, fast and has a great type combination. And I really dig its design too.
Starter: Infernape
Another fast and strong Pokémon. I used it for the first time in Pearl and it worked so well there, it has remained my favorite Sinnoh starter since then. It used to be one of my top favorite starters, but nowadays it faces fierce competition from other starters from the newer generations so I'm not sure about that anymore.
Legendary/Mythical: Shaymin.
A cute hedgehog with flowers, it creates flower fields, symbolizes gratitude and has an awesome alternate form. I love everything about it.

Honorable mentions:
Regular: Staraptor, Luxray, Roserade, Gastrodon, Ambipom, Drifblim, Lopunny, Mismagius, Honchkrow, Glameow, Happiny, Spiritomb, Lucario, Hippowdon, Mantyke, Weavile, Magnezone, Magmortar, Togekiss, Yanmega, Leafeon, Glaceon, Gliscor, Mamoswine, Porygon-Z, Gallade, Froslass, Rotom
Starter: Empoleon, Torterra
Legendary/Mythical: Palkia, Giratina, Mesprit, Cresselia, Manaphy

Unova
Regular: Haxorus
It has been my favorite ever since I first used it in Black. An awesome Pokémon overall with a great design, it is strong and powerful, it even has "Hax" in its name, what's not to love? I have used it on several teams over the years.
Starter: Serperior
A grass snake is a really cool idea, and it worked very well. I used it for the first time on Black too where it worked surprisingly well.
Legendary/Mythical: Reshiram
The mascot of Black which my first Unova game, and a really cool Pokémon. I like how it is strong and powerful with an amazing STAB combination, it has an epic design and it represents truth, which is awesome. That said, Keldeo is an extremely close second in this category.

Honorable mentions:
Regular: Stoutland, Simipour, Musharna, Unfezant, Zebstrika, Gigalith, Swoobat, Excadrill, Audino, Conkeldurr, Sawk, Seismitoad, Leavanny, Scolipede, Whimsicott, Lilligant, Krookodile, Darmanitan, Crustle, Scrafty, Sigilyph, Carracosta, Archeops, Zoroark, Cinccino, Gothitelle, Reuniclus, Swanna, Vanilluxe, Emolga, Sawsbuck, Escavalier, Amoonguss, Jellicent, Galvantula, Ferrothorn, Klinklang, Eelektross, Chandelure, Beartic, Cryogonal, Accelgor, Stunfisk, Mienshao, Druddigon, Golurk, Bisharp, Bouffalant, Braviary, Mandibuzz, Heatmor, Durant, Hydreigon, Volcarona
Starter: Emboar, Samurott
Legendary/Mythical: Keldeo, Cobalion, Terrakion, Virizion, Tornadus, Thundurus, Landorus, Zekrom, Kyurem, Victini, Meloetta, Genesect... wait, that's all of them!

Kalos
Regular: Sylveon
My favorite Eeveelution. A cute Fairy-type, that's all I need. I used it for the first time on X and I liked it a lot there, it is one of the things that made me fall in love with Fairy-types. I have used it on many other different teams too and it has pretty much always worked well for me.
Starter: Greninja
A strong and fast ninja-frog which is really cool. Like with Sylveon, I used it when I played through X. I have also used it on many different teams and it has pretty much always worked. I have never cared much for Ash-Greninja though.
Legendary/Mythical: Xerneas
The mascot of X, my first Kalos game. It is a Fairy-type, has a really cool design and it represents life, which I like.

Honorable mentions:
Regular: Diggersby, Talonflame, Pangoro, Meowstic, Doublade, Aegislash, Aromatisse, Slurpuff, Barbaracle, Dragalge, Clawitzer, Heliolisk, Tyrantrum, Aurorus, Hawlucha, Klefki, Trevenant, Gourgeist, Noivern
Starter: Delphox, Chesnaught
Legendary/Mythical: Yveltal, Zygarde, Diancie

Alola
Regular: Lycanroc
I love wolves, Lycanroc quickly became one of my favorites after I had used it in Sun. Midday form is my favorite, followed by Dusk, while Midnight is my least favorite (though it is also the only one I have never used).
Starter: Primarina
An elegant Fairy-type which is also really strong. It became my favorite after I first used the Popplio line in Moon.
Legendary/Mythical: Magearna
This is a weird case. I never cared for it when it was first revealed, but I fell in love with it after seeing it in the actual game. A Fairy-type robot maid, that's something I really needed in my life without knowing about it until I saw Magearna in the games.
Ultra Beast: Celesteela
The lazy bamboo-rocket princess from the Sanctuary Fortress. That's just awesome, and my favorite of the Ultra Beasts. It is also another thing I didn't know I needed in my life.

Honorable mentions:
Regular: Toucannon, Vikavolt, Oricorio, Ribombee, Wishiwashi, Mudsdale, Salazzle, Bewear, Tsareena, Comfey, Oranguru, Passimian, Palossand, Minior, Togedemaru, Mimikyu, Drampa, Kommo-o
Starter: Incineroar, Decidueye
Legendary/Mythical: Tapu Koko/Lele/Fini, Solgaleo, Lunala, Necrozma, Zeraora
Ultra Beast: Nihilego, Pheromosa, Kartana, Stakataka, Blacephalon, Naganadel

Galar
Regular: Copperajah
I have a hard time picking a favorite from Galar. These Pokémon are all so new, so I'm not really sure about my true favorite. But for now, I'm going with Copperajah. I like elephants and this one is really cool. I used a Copperajah as one of the 15 members of my team in Sword and it worked very well there, so I'm going with it.
Starter: Cinderace
This is the only Galar starter I have actually used, so that's why I'm going with it. Scorbunny was the one I picked in Sword since I liked it the best from the base forms, and I really like Cinderace too. It is strong and fast with a great signature move, it also has a great design and concept (and I have next to zero interest in football, so that says a lot).
Legendary/Mythical: Zacian
I mentioned that I love wolves. Well, how about a ridiculously strong epic blue wolf with a sword? That made this an easy decision. I recently got to use it on three different Battle Tower teams and it worked extremely well there. Everything about Zacian is awesome.

Honorable mentions:
Regular: Thievul, Eldegoss, Wooloo, Drednaw, Boltund, Applin, Arrokuda, Barraskewda, Toxtricity, Polteageist, Hatterene, Sirfetch'd, Runerigus, Alcremie, Frosmoth, Indedee, Morpeko, Dragapult
Starter: Inteleon
Legendary/Mythical: Zamazenta, Eternatus (they are both great, but I prefer Zacian)
I think that's it. I might have forgotten some Pokémon regarding the honorable mentions but it doesn't really matter. Also apologies for any potential spelling mistakes, especially for the Pokémon names.

As for who I think will win the poll:

Kanto: Charizard
Pikachu might have a small chance here, otherwise this is pretty much set in stone. Charizard is extremely popular, I don't see how anything else from Kanto can beat it.
Johto: Tyranitar
I am not sure here, but I think Tyranitar is one of the most popular Johto Pokémon so it probably has a good chance of winning.
Hoenn: Flygon
This is a very popular Pokémon from Hoenn, probably the most popular Hoenn Pokémon overall, so I think it will win.
Sinnoh: Lucario
It has always been one of the most popular Sinnoh Pokémon so I think it is going to win here.
Unova: Zekrom
I'm really unsure here but Zekrom has always seemed very popular and I think it won another poll a few years ago so I think it has a good chance of winning this one too. But again, I'm really unsure here.
Kalos: Greninja
Another one that should be the obvious winner, Greninja has always been very popular so I think it will win here. Being included in Smash probably helps it a lot as well. Sylveon is another good candidate though.
Alola: Incineroar
Probably the most popular starter and it got added to Smash Ultimate too so I think it will win. Lycanroc is also very popular and it might have a chance but I'm not sure.
Galar: No idea.
I don't know what could win from here since I really don't know which Galar Pokémon are the most popular. But I hope that the results of the poll will give us an idea of which the most popular Galar Pokémon are. Which is going to be very interesting, so I'm looking forward to the poll results!

Actually, after looking back at some posts from this thread, I feel as if I might as well say my own reasoning for why I chosen the mons I did for the best Pokemon of the generation in my opinion.

Charizard: I actually love this and blastoise about the same... Sometimes, I like Charizard more, and sometimes, I like Blastoise more. Don't care for the bulbusaur line though. I've had this conflict as to whether I truly like Charizard or Blastoise more for many years now... So I guess this will be 2 in one! You see, Charizard is this awesome looking fire breathing lizard that feels like a dragon but I know it's actually just a winged lizard or something. This isn't something I can explain all to well... As for Blastoise, It's this awesome looking turtle with cannons on it's shell and it feels like a big bad boss of some sort. Man, and it only gets better in it's mega form... But so does Zard.

Tyranitar: Other than Steelix, Tysploshion, and Feraligatr, this is the only gen 2 Mon I actually care for. I don't really care all too much for most of the gen 2 mons. Tyranitar is my favorite gen 2 mon, and my 2nd favorite pseudo legendary overall, only behind Hydregion. Anyways, it has this Godzilla vibe, generally looks awesome, and stuff. Don't have too much to say about it.

Metagross: Big fan of this thing, just barely beats Salamence as my 3rd favorite pseudo legendary. It's like this supercomputer robot spider thing, generally looks awesome, and stuff. Also, it has one of the best shinies too. Not a reason why I love it so much, but it's something I guess.

Darkrai: Not only is it my favorite gen 4 Pokemon, but my favorite of all Pokemon. Gen 4 and gen 5 have some of my all time favorites. This gen has plenty of Pokemon I love, like Weavile, Lucario, Infernape, Luxray, all of the three creation trio, and I could go on and on... But none beat Darkrai. Darkrai is just the best thing ever. It's lore is awesome, the whole Darkrai causing nightmares and cresselia balancing them is super neat, it looks awesome AND it's design fits it's lore, it was an awesome villain in Mystery Dungeon explorers of sky (which I don't need to go into depth of as you may already know... But if you want to know there is online resources and YouTube videos) which only made me like it even more, and... God if I tried explaining it much farther you'd be reading for the next 1000 years.

Bisharp: Like I said earlier, gen 5 has some really good Pokemon (although it does have some... Ehh ones in the mix) like Hydregion, Cofagrigus, Haxorus, Zekrom and Reshiram, Krookodile, and Golurk, but my favorite of all gen 5 Pokemon is Bisharp. It gives off this sinister knight vibe... But that's all I can really put into words. This thing in my opinion is one of the best Pokemon period, but I have a hard time explaining why I love it so much.

Aegislash: This thing has an awesome concept, great overall design, the ability is the best ability of all times (fits the concept + allows for a unique battle style most Pokemon cannot have), and the idea of a possessed weapon was always cool to me. I don't really care too much for the gen 6 Mons.

Golisopod: This thing just rules. It has this pseudo mask, it looks like a big bad boss, the whole concept of it being big and tough yet cowardly (as seen from emergency exit) is a great concept, and yeah. Don't really care too much for gen 7 mons either.

Corviknight: I swear, I knew this would be my favorite gen 8 Pokemon since I've crossed paths with it in it's reveal. The whole taxi bird concept is great, it has a design that makes most other birds jealous, and... Yeah like with Bisharp I have a hard time putting the feelings into words.

Well that was fun. I hope this thread lives on, because this is the best thread I've seen in a long time.

I think people are underestimating people's love of Legendary pokemon. They're strong, they're on the box, they generally have the most emphasis placed on them, they often have cool designs, they're rare; Mythicals in particular will probabyl be very popular. The only ones I'd say would match them would be Starters, "mascots" (either in main series or anime), and memes.

Like let's remember the old General Election from gen 6. The context is a little different since it was only up to Hoopa, you only got to vote for one pokemon at a time and it was Japan only, but it's a decent rule of thumb.

There ARE some "normal" pokemon all over but it leans very hard towards legendary Pokemon especially in the top spots. STarters & Mascots are their only real companions until you start getting to the 30s. And then you have things like Magnemite getting up there because of memes, similar to how the Dream World poll had Mudkip & Rattata fairly high up.

The fact everyone gets to vote by generation will probably help out normal pokemon way more but I'd be pretty (nicely!) surprised if the winners of each generation was someone who breaks these molds. I think Arceus will have a deathgrip on gen 4, for example.

Don't forget that they stated ahead of time that the winner would get an event distribution. I don't remember if one is also happening this time around or not.
They've not said as much but I guarantee that even if it doesn't* happen most people's assumption is oh, of course, this worldwide poll done to celebrate Pokemon Day (which is coming alongside a new mythic, assorted Go festivities, the mewtwo remake coming to netflix, a masters update, etc) and choose the most popular pokemon will result in getting said Pokemon as a gift.

*I have a feeling that they are doing it, but they're holding off on talking about it until they see the winner because depending on the Pokemon it could be a SWSH give away if its one of the 436 in the game or a Home giveaway which will have to wait until the DLC hits OR just never leaves Home. Just a weird marketing thing to presumably influence stuff in the future is possible but I dunno; it would be odd if there was just like...nothing to go with this at all, you know?

this was cool, appreciate that they divided it up by generation

my picks:
:sm/mewtwo:
a lot of the mons in gen 1 feel more like generic monsters rather than truly expressive creatures to me. i ultimately don't think there's anything wrong with this, but it makes mewtwo stand out so much in comparison. the idea and message of mewtwo is one of the strongest things in gen 1, and i think it's really stood the test of time.

:sm/celebi:
celebi feels a bit more neutral than the other mythicals to me but its representation of nature feels less forced than other mythicals like mew and jirachi. don't really know how to explain it but celebi pulls off the idea of a mythical pokemon incredibly well in my opinion through lore, design, and even battling capabilities.

:sm/mawile:
not much i can say here, mawile is just a really awesome design. i've even started to appreciate the base form a bit more after the mega form spelled out what they were trying to go for with it.

:sm/cherrim-sunshine:
lots of gen 4 designs i like (all 3 starter lines are in my top 10 starters probably) but cherrim is one of the more overlooked ones. even if the concept wasn't executed well from an in-battle perspective, cherrim's design is still incredibly cute. it gives me some gen 8 vibes (alcremie/gossifleur?) but the color scheme is what really gives it that special charm.

:sm/cryogonal:
this pokemon design makes absolutely no sense and i love it. who came up with this? why are the eyes glowing? what's with the weird rope mouth? cryogonal's extreme rarity in-game amplifies how ambiguous and utterly bizarre it is imo.

:sm/dragalge:
this mon is (probably unintentionally) actually designed incredibly well for competitive singles. by this i dont mean that its good, i mean that it fills a new niche really well. it faces competition from almost nothing else because of its really cool typing and adaptability with decent special bulk. also, algae is cool, and dragons are cool, so dragalge just gets double the cool from that

:sm/pheromosa:
my favorite of the ultra beasts because of how well it falls in the pokemon uncanny valley. with the ultra beasts, theres stuff like nihilego and xurkitree where you can say "these arent natural pokemon", and buzzwole and naganadel where you can say "yeah, i could see these being pokemon". but phero falls right in the middle. it's hard to pinpoint exactly what feels off about it, but you know it's definitely unnatural and unlike any other pokemon youve seen so far.

:sm/centiskorch:
im not super sold on the gen 8 designs cause theyre all super new, but centiskorch is a neat take on bug types and you can tell they put more effort into it than just "centipede but with fire". the design fits together pretty well imo.

idk whos gonna win probably like zard typhlosion swampert staraptor volcarona gren rowlet snom or something lol

This isn't so much about picks/predictions, and I dunno about anyone else but if/when they release the detailed stats on every Pokemon's placement in the popularity rankings I'd LOVE if they did breakdowns for individual regions of the world. It'd be fun to compare how the most popular Pokemon differ/stay the same between Japan and South America for instance

Gyarados
Suicune
Flygon
Infernape
Volcarona
Greninja
Poiple
Toxitricity

Am a basic bitch. Honorable mentions to Sceptile, Staraptor, Garchomp, Azelf, Darkrai and Lycanroc.

my votes:
Gen 1: Onix
Gen 2: Stantler?/Slowking
Gen 3: Metagross
Gen 4: Magnezone
Gen 5: Volcarona/Cryogonal
Gen 6: Clawizer
Gen 7: Stakataka
Gen 8: Melmetal/Orbeetle

my predictions
Gen 1: Charizard (duh)
Gen 2:STAAAANTLER/Umbreon
Gen 3: Rayquaza
Gen 4: Arceus/Lucario
Gen 5: Volcarona
Gen 6: Greninja
Gen 7: Necrozma/Naganadel
Gen 8: Eternatus

If Infernape wins gen 4, I’ll delete that entire soliloquy-sized rant I just posted on the unpopular opinion thread

Can someone please explain to me what this Stantler meme is?

Only the OP’s mentioned it but the only Gen 2 shitmon / mememon that should garner enough votes (not to win, of course) should be Stantler due to it being the icon for the Nat Dexers / Dexit movement...

Stantler is the representative shitmon that people are using to voice the disapproval of culling Pokémon by GF. It being a symbol of mediocrity, being forgettable, and being bland makes it the mememon of choice to vote for.

My Picks
1- Venusaur (My first starter)
2- Chikorita (My first Pokemon in Silver. Plus, it gets hated a lot)
3- Swampert (GG Game)
4- Garchomp (The amount of effort to find it makes me attached to it)
5- Volcarona (Memorable encounter in BW postgame)
6- Xerneas (GG Game)
7- Wishiwashi (The Water Trial leaves an impression on me)
8- Hatterene (fun to use)

My Winner Predictions
1- Charizard (lol)
2- Umbreon or Scizor
3- Gardevoir or Blaziken
4- Lucario or Garchomp
5- Zoroark or Hydreigon
6- Greninja
7- Incineroar or Decidueye
8- ?????

The results were just livestreamed. We only have the top 10 overall, sadly.
10. Gengar
9. Gardevoir
8. Rayquaza
7. Garchomp
6. Sylveon
5. Umbreon
4. Charizard
3. Mimikyu
2. Lucario
1. Greninja

Sigh... very disappointed at number 1 not being a reptile, and a canid being in this list.

Got to say that while I kind of expected Mimikyu to be here, I didn't expect it being in third.

I am honestly hugely surprised by some of this! I seriously thought Charizard was a lock for top 3, and to its credit it is the most popular Gen 1 mon, but I was not expecting there to be others that surpass it! Greninja still at #1... not bad. Below that there's also some surprises. I honestly didn't think Garchomp would make top 10.

Also intrigued that not a single Gen 8 mon made top 10. Maybe the designs just haven't had the time to marinate?

I think I just about lost it when I saw Gardevoir; and then there were two eeveelutions in a row; and then Mimikyu beats out Charizard, and then not only is Greninja at the top but Pikachu isn't in at all! This is just... so amazing in so many ways. I love this.

Couple interesting things to note:
- Every generation except 5 and 8 are represented here.
- All of these Pokémon except Greninja itself are Pokémon that are either currently available in Sword and Shield, or in the case of Garchomp and Rayquaza; are Pokémon we know are coming in the Crown Tundra DLC.
- Of the top 5 Pokémon, three of them are playable in Smash Ultimate; including Greninja itself. Everything else on the list except Sylveon and Umbreon are also in the game either as spirits or as Poké Balls.

Lemme go over my predictions real quick:

My Winner Predictions
1- Charizard (duh)
2- Umbreon or Furret or Stantler
3- Gardevoir
4- Lucario or Garchomp
5- honestly idk, there aren't any gen 5 mons with massive fanbases. Perhaps Snivy or Haxorus?
6- Greninja or Sylveon
7- Incineroar or Decidueye
8- This'll be the most fascinating to see: I don't have any main idea, but any of the starters, Sirfetch'd, Toxtricity, Dragapult or Snom are all likely candidates

Gen 5 and 8 didn't get top 10 placements, so we don't know those at least for now. But wow, I was right on the mark with a lot of these! Only ones I got outright wrong were Gens 3 and 7, seriously shocked I didn't think of Mimikyu as a top candidate.

Yeah thats what I figure. More recognition and no one lit the world on fire like Mimikyu did.

I still hope we see the full results. Or at least top 10 for each gen.
