(Little) Things that annoy you in Pokémon

I am shocked to hear this; I actually think X and Y have some of the best town themes of the entire series (granted, this is only about the towns and not routes or battles or w/e).
Shalour, Coumarine, Cyllage, Anistar and Laverre have very neat themes, and I know Snowbelle and Lumiose have their fans, though i don't count among them.

Nah. So many of them are just... there. They don't feel like part of the environments in a lot of cases - they just feel like incidental music, light and unobtrusive and pleasant but not actually strong or memorable like earlier games.

Route 1 is dire. It sounds like a Mario theme, it's so out of place. And if you traverse Route 1 without stopping you'll hear about a second of it. Kalos Route 1 in general is awful tbh, I don't know why it exists when it's a tiny short corridor with no Pokemon. Such a pointless waste of memory.

A lot of the town themes just... don't stick in my mind. Dendemille's theme isn't even great, it's just one of the few I can actually remember. Anistar's is... interesting and quite pleasant to listen to, from what I can recall of it, but again, it feels more incidental than part of the DNA of the town. When I think about locations like Lavender Town or Goldenrod or Slateport City, their themes feel intrinsically part of them - like they wouldn't be the same without them. For a lot of the Kalos locations their music just doesn't add much.

And the leader theme, as R_N already said, is diabolically bad. Honestly quite astounded anyone signed off on that.

Not saying there are no good tracks on the list. The Route 8-13 theme is my personal favourite Kalos theme; I love the vast, epic feel it brings to each of the routes it plays on, particularly Route 8, and the way it never quite settles down - it's thrilling. Route 15's theme is great, too, for similar reasons. The Skiddo-riding theme is lovely, the League music is phenomenal, and of course Diantha's battle music absolutely slaps. But in general, XY's soundtrack just fails to thrill and inspire me the way previous gens managed to.

quick we need a random popular Pokémon in this new animation / short / movie / gam-

LUCARIO

I’ll admit I haven’t watched much of the newer stuff they’ve done (Origins,Generations, Evolutions) but it’s honestly really weird how most of the time they treat Lucario as more or less the mascot of Sinnoh. I mean, sure in-game two big trainers used it in Maylene and Cynthia and they were well aware of its popularity by the time BW2 rolled around.

Yeah they did use Staraptor in that Bidoof short (great short btw, loved the “Additional Bidoof” credit) but it’s honestly kinda lazy how Lucario is marketed all the time. I wanna see someone in a new short using a friggin Mothim or Cherrim, or any of the other less popular Pokémon like Luvdisc (okay, maybe not that last one but still).

Edit: yes I am aware the Lucario movie exists, it was in Brawl and other Smash games too. Doesn’t make it stealing the spotlight any less egregious.

While I agree with this (I'm a big Cherrim guy), it's pretty clear that Lucario was always intended to be the mascot of Gen IV. Its movie released before the games itself (the only not-Baby Pokémon to be spotlighted pre-release), and it found its way into Super Smash Bros. Brawl over cut characters Plusle and Minun, who I guess were considered perfect Gen III reps due to the introduction of double battles. Game Freak was never made well aware of its popularity, because its popularity was manufactured through over-exposure in the first place.

It's the same as Zoroark in V, Greninja in VI, and purportedly Toxtricity in VIII but it didn't take off like the other two. Gen VII sort of gave this "one mon to steal the spotlight" strategy a miss, and it has on average more popular designs than other gens. We should definitely go back to that.

toxtricity was def made to be popular, but I don't mind it as much because it doesn't feel shoved into my face every other day like lucario does. Seriously, at this point I'll take another marketable mon over lucario: give me pachirisu or the starters!! idk buizel!!!!! fuck man i'll even take some legendaries over lucario. I'm at my limit

Still mad Toxtricity's preevo is a garbage design

I don't entirely hate Toxel's design but that artwork in particular does nothing for it. The sprites and artwork where it's sat in a more naturalistic babyish position make it look a lot cuter and aesthetically pleasing. Zeraora is another notable example of this issue - it's not a terrible design per se, but all of its sprites and official artwork make it look incredibly ugly.

See?

I'm also starting to get the same feeling with Gengar.

"Hey, we need a Ghost-type Pokemon for this part"
"Gengar"
"But we've given a Gengar to Ash in the main anime, there were episodes focusing on it Gigantamaxing, had a PokeToon starring a Gengar that turns a girl into a Gengar, it's in Unite; Don't you think we should give another Ghost-type the spotlight?"
"... Just use Gengar"

Eh, it's still looks unappealing, mainly because I don't get WHY its designed to look like a baby wearing a diaper. What's the connection with it being a Poison- and Electric-type? What's the connection with Toxtricity who are based after punk rock guitarists (with a gimmick that one is an electric guitar and the other a bass guitar based on their nature)?

Like, were they going for a "wild child" concept (which is a name of a rock band and of several rock songs)? When I think of a "wild child" I don't think of a baby in diapers, I think of this:
300px-Black_2_White_2_Benga.png

Give it similar proportions (though smaller obviously), messy electric "hair", look like its wearing torn clothes, and instead of the "strings" on its chest it can have a singular volume dial it can "crank up".

I had the same thought (and agree that'd probably be a superior design). Given that Toxel is the first baby Pokemon in several generations, I think that the designers got way too into the baby angle. Part of me wonders if they just wanted a baby Pokemon, made a generic design, and then just tweaked it a little to match Toxtricity once that was created.

I think this is less and less true as generations go on. Gengar IS a very iconic Gen I Pokémon and accordingly receives a lot of spotlight, but it's far from the only Ghost-Type to receive a lot of exposure. Most notably, while Rowlet isn't a Ghost-Type Pokémon itself, it does evolve into Decidueye, and Rowlet has received huge amounts of exposure (also being in Unite as of a couple months ago too). Around Halloween, of course, lots of Ghost-Type Pokémon get spotlighted, similar to how many Ice-Type Pokémon get spotlighted around Christmas time. Mimikyu is a breakout Ghost-Type star too, who has received a lot of attention.

Ghost-Type has a lot more of an endemic issue, which is that there just aren't that many of them. The only type rarer than it is Ice-Type, but at least the Ice-Type often gets its own compulsory route. The Ghost-Type is almost always reduced to an optional side area or swift route -- an excuse to put the two or three new Ghost-Type Pokémon introduced that gen. Most bafflingly, Gens VI and VII combined Ghost- and Grass-Type way too much, at around half of the non-mythical or -legendary new Ghost-Type Pokémon across both gens.

It feels like Ghost-Type Pokémon should feel way more individually special due to their scarcity, and for the first few gens that was pretty true. In Gen II Misdreavus was post-game exclusive and thus inherently rare; Shedinja was a total secret that players only ever stumbled across if they still didn't have 6 Pokémon once their Nincada hit level 20 -- its existence isn't mentioned anywhere in the game; Spiritomb is locked behind the underground and used by Cynthia, while Rotom is in the TV only after midnight, Drifloon can only be found on Fridays and Froslass is a trade evo... there's an intentional scarcity and mystery to Ghost-Type Pokémon that was supposed to make them feel special. During this stage, Gastly was the "common" Ghost-Type Pokémon that could be thrown into spooky areas to add atmosphere (granted in Hoenn Shuppet/Duskull do the same, Gastly is unavailable). That's just due to it being iconic and how it was in the original games; if Phantump were a Gen I design, it would have taken that spot and been Gengar levels of popular.

Since the soft reboot of Gen V, they've never returned to this sense of mystery behind the Ghost-Type, and I really think that's a shame. Now Ghost-Type Pokémon tend to just be random encounters, outside of Dhelmise' absurdly hidden nature in Alola, which honestly doesn't feel special so much as frustrating. There's intentional scarcity and mystery, and then there's forcing players to grind.

I'm pretty sure Toxtricity was a regular 3-stage design before they decided to push it as the Gen VIII mascot. They cut a middle evo that probably would be similar to this. Lucario and Zoroark are both 2-stage lines, and there's a case to be made that part of their appeal is that they don't have that awkward teenage phase that many other Pokémon do. But punk is something that is directly associated with teenagers, or at least people in their young 20s, so cutting the teenager for the baby design was 100% a mistake. On the other hand, if they had kept it a 3-stage line, I think Toxel's existence becomes more reasonable. It sorta shows a development into becoming a punk rocker that would be cool.

>Smallest new Pokemon selection ever without something like regional forms or (more than 1) cross-gen evo to supplement it, resulting in them being overshadowed in their own region the worst of any roster not counting Johto or DP Sinnoh
This is just me nitpicking but if you take away cross-gen evos/prevos and legendaries/mythicals, Kalos actually ekes out a win numerically over Sinnoh (65 to 64 lol), meaning it has a bigger selection of new Pokémon for regular gameplay (ostensibly, anyway).

Granted, while I'm not a fan of how many legendaries/mythicals Gen 4 has, I do think they were implemented well and actually integrated with the world (at least from unreleased events), so they do add a lot to Sinnoh's worldbuilding and make it feel like a land with a storied history with places to explore long after you've beaten the champion. Kalos does have the "storied history" part, but the one special Pokémon for it remains unreleased and it doesn't give you places to go after you beat Diantha.

>2/3 of its most successful mons competitively have gotten direct nerfs, one of which (Gale Wings) totally killed any viability
Off-hand you must be referring to:

- Aegislash (I think the King's Shield nerf is valid; the stat nerf is slightly baffling because it means it has less Defense than Doublade, even without Eviolite)

- Prankster? (Meaning Klefki. I see the intention behind this nerf but it bothers me when a faster Prankster Pokémon can't use its status moves on a Dark-type even when it would still go first if it didn't have prankster. Wouldn't mind seeing this be refined a bit)

Not sure of any others. IMO Gale Wings deserved the nerf but I suppose that's just my opinion.

Pretty sure Mega Kangaskhan is in that list, since it dominated VGC in its debut year and had the second attack from Parental Bond reduced in strength

I honestly think Thundurus was the culprit for Prankster Nerf than Klefki considering it dominated VGC 12, 13, 15, and 16 when it was allowed; I know how cancerous Thundurus was from bitter experience.

Nah the third I was referring to is Greninja, who even got a buff with Battle Bond. As I discussed tho that and being the most popular Pokemon of the 21st century apparently still couldn't save it from the dexit sledgehammer

Honestly a lot of baby mons are "meh" for both design and existence, so :psygrump:

^ Gen 2 also is pretty bad. 19 cross evos, with only 100 mons to begin with

Though it gets me how Gen 6 was mostly new mons bar Sylveon Eeveelution and megas, and then Gen 7 just drops the ball with regionals. At least it still was healthier for new mon count (88 mons despite the many regionals) than 4 and 2

and Froslass is a trade evo...

Sorry ? Dawn Stone is considered as trade ? I've never found Ghost type not common ... Regarding their number. The problem is the number of Ghost Pokemon not the scarcity ... Every region has a "ghost" nest ... More than Ice i guess !

And every region has a ghost specialist to showcase them ... Agatha in Gen I, Morty in Gen II, Phoebe in Gen III, Fantina in Gen IV, Shauntal in Gen V, Acerola in Gen VII (+ Mimikyu totem), Allister in Gen VIII (Shield only). Ah no Ghost specialist in Gen VI !

Tbf Battle Bond was added in Gen 7 and pretty much only existed as an anime tie-in. I don't follow all of the official comp scenes very closely but IIRC you weren't allowed to use Battle Bond Greninja in competitive online, right? So sure, it was nerfed, but you couldn't use it to begin with.

(If I'm wrong I apologize)

Why is Spikemuth a beat'em up stage?

Because it's PUNK.

Real answer, honestly I never made the connection before but you're right, lol. Now I'm imagining it as a Double Dragon stage with the Player and Hop walking down it beating up Team Yell members with Piers as the boss at the end, lol.

But I suppose that does fit with the Dark-type aesthetic. What would a Dark-type Gym Leader puzzle be? F*** IT, just make it a gauntlet battles of nearly a dozen trainers to either whittle them down or annoy them they'll turn away.

Here’s the thing. I love Spikemuth in SwSh.

We’ve all had those experiences where we’re visiting a new town or city that looks pretty rough, and so are following Google Maps religiously to just get to our destination as quickly as possible, preferably via as many main roads as possible. Spikemuth IS that city. Of course you’re not gonna walk into random people’s houses if they have overloaded trash cans outside their front door, or walk into a run down off-license to try and buy PokéBalls that are probably illegally imported. You’re there to beat the leader and that’s all you’re there for, and even then you’re getting ambushed just trying to walk directly to him.

It’s pretty much the most realistic atmosphere of exploring a new location Pokémon has ever done. Whether you think it was through cutting costs of developing a proper new city or not, the end product we received is pretty damn good. One of SwSh’s better looking areas too, owing to the lack of vegetation.
