Anonymous vs Scientology

Firestorm

I did my best, I have no regrets!

I didn't know whether to post this here of Firebot considering it's freakin' 4chan, but decided that there is some potential discussion to be had among the laughter.

Anyway, Anonymous has decided that Scientology should be taken down. They released a YouTube video as a declaration of war and DDoS'd pretty much every Scientology website.

Details: http://partyvan.info/index.php/Project_Chanology

Original Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCbKv9yiLiQ

They've been reported on in multiple mainstream news reports. Hell, Fox News even reported on it saying they were calling themselves an Internet Hate Machine XD

Quite possibly the most entertaining thing 4chan has done.

This was the Orlando raid/protest they did: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfKQ75F0XsA

Interesting. I don't have much to add aside from the fact that Operation Clambake, an anti-Scientology website, generally has an appropriate message about situations regarding Scientology.

A link to Operation Clambake's point of view.

EDIT: Oh wow, I just found this. So I might as well post it up... (thanks to Operation Clambake)

A picture of a protest in Canada apparently.

So there is a video of tom cruise rambling on youtube that gets taken down because of copyright violations so now they are gonna throw crayons at scientologists?

Have a nice day.

Read about it a couple of days ago. I don't approve of either side at all, but if I were to pick sides I would take Anonymous either way because outside of the internet they are generally harmless, plus they're good for keeping the lame internet fads out of other forums (then again you could argue that if it weren't for 4chan, many of them wouldn't exist).

I disagree with the methods of Anonymous, but I certainly disagree with the methods of Scientology. They make every effort to suppress free speech and violently block any criticisms of their group. There is enough evidence of their misdeeds that I really do feel like someone needs to do something about it. At the very least, I hope Anonymous sheds light onto the practices of this evil group and brings about a full government investigation. They can't hide behind the veil of religion forever. Eventually they have to answer for what they are doing.

resorting to "internet violence" like DDoS attacks is never acceptable. e-terrorism like that should be punished. oh, and while scientology isn't my thing, it doesn't deserve to be attacked as much as it is. can't we all just get along?

Why does it not deserved to be attacked?
It's not as if they're some quiet little cult keeping to themselves.

No one deserves to be attacked. Internet Vigilantes are some of the most dangerous mobs of the internet and also need to be stopped IMO. They can cause thousands of dollars in damages.

Scientology deserves harsh criticism, they deserve open protest. But no one deserves DDoS, really. And further, it doesn't help the anti-Scientology cause at all to be associated with this kind of trash.

Fuck that.

Scientology sucks, and their websites are corrupting the minds of many. They must be stopped. I wouldn't mind if they were some quiet llittle cult keeping to themselves but they aren't. Scientolgy hurts people. It's a stupid, fucked up religion and if DDoSing works then I'll do it.

Besides, it's fun.

While the Scientology crowd is possibly even more obnoxious than the group attacking them I have a really hard time see this as anything more than a group of testosterone fueled teenagers trying to take justice into their own hands over the internet.

Foolish, but given the target I'm not really overly sympathetic either. It's this sort of thing that is going to get use burned by stricter internet laws regardless of how unnecessary they should be, unfortunately.

Because they are a legitimate religion. They may be peopled by douchebags, yes, but that's not an excuse to attack them.

if they're gonna attack a stupid religion at least attack the westboro baptist church or something ;/ (google them if you don't know what that is)

either way I don't support any of 4chan's stupid bullshit (nor do I really support scientology but this is really ridiculous now)

The Westboro Baptist Church isn't a religion. It's a bunch of misguided individuals who think they're doing the word of God.

Maybe we can hope that they take each other out.

But eitherway, we all get to see the potential of Internet e-Mobbing (Basically, based on number of people that shows up on 2/10, and see if they can accomplish their goal of taking away CoS's Tax Exemption.), so it's an interesting event for me to keep a track of.

it's not a religion because you pay to learn about it.

xenu is a monster.

People keep saying "Scientology hurts people". I'd like to hear some more about this, could anyone enlighten me?

I'd read up on Operation Clambake.

As for a personal anecdote... a Scientologist got in a debate on another forum I was on. Overall, the discussion was going well, but as soon as one guy posted something about Scientology, the Scientologist then threatened to sue him for copyright infringement. When he didn't comply to editing the post, he threatened the moderators to copyright infringement. Finally, the bastard was banned and I never seen a Scientologist since.

As for stuff on Operation Clambake... it seems like a reliable source but really, he gives some pretty harsh accusations. Obviously, take them with a grain of salt.

Q. "I've read some nasty stuff about you, is it true?"
A. I can prove that the cult hires private investigators to dig up dirt on me. They call people in my past (personal and professional) claiming they are journalists etc to find out if they reveal anything. They post anonymous accusations and insinuations on the Internet suggesting I am a sexual pervert and a terrorist. They send letters and call managers and directors in the company I work for to try to ruin me professionally. To me all this only confirms every reason why I protest this cult. I was prepared for this when I got involved as a critic.
The cult has made a page about me filled with lies. Their site about me is made by the Scientologist Joel Phillip. Phillips interviewed me twice on the street when I was in Los Angeles and you can watch it here on XenuTV. You believe what you want, I can only ask you to check both sides before you decide to believe them or me.
Here is a a letter they sent to his employers (I can only assume to get him fired). (this is his first link)

i find it pretty hilarious that the "documented proof" is on a link to their own website...

i also find it funny that scientology's most used threat is copyright infringement. ....its as if they don't want us to know about their religion!!...

as for the topic i don't agree with DDoSing a website even if i find its message to be wrong. its freedom of speech and people have every right to be as stupid as they like. i do, however, think that this is another good example of why stupid should be painful.

on a side note those letters they send out to various employers are horrifically vicious with their unfounded claims and should be met with some kind of retaliatory strike to discredit the cult of scientology.
