FINAL STANDINGS

We finally made it to playoffs! I want to take the time to thank our incredible hosts. Mubs, PA, Arai, zio, Stable, you guys all did a fantastic job, and I appreciate the time you guys put in to make this tournament run smoothly. I also want to thank kjdaas and Perry for creating the original sheet that I modified, along with helping me bug fix the sheet. Finally, congratulations to the individual cup winners!

Tournament Rules
  • General tournament rules and regulations can be found here.
  • 1v1 Classic Rules can be read here.
  • Battles will be a Bo3 of Bo5s, Single Elimination
  • Tiers played must be figured out during scheduling.
  • Battles must take place on the Smogtours or Main server. I highly recommend playing on Smogtours, because these games take a very long time without automatic timer.
  • Speaking of timer, it's absolutely mandatory. You cannot gentleman to play without timer. If I see a series happening without timer, I'm going to turn it on myself.
  • Do not make baseless activity posts -- get in contact with your opponent and report missed times / scheduling issues only. Please also do not activity call on the first day.
  • Learn how to schedule. Specify a number of days and time frames that you'll be available at, and always mention your Time Zone. Don't use vague statements like "Sunday Evening". Tournament Scheduling Guidelines can be found here.
  • Replays are strictly required for the development of the metagame.

James155 predicts
eblurb vs smely socks, smely u have no chance vs eblurb, eblurb always wins
Close vs toad, I think close will try harder and prep more than toad, both great players but I think close takes it
Mubs vs maki usually I would bold mubs cuz east coast gang but maki is a tryhard
Ggopw vs waylaid, I think waylaid will try harder and prep more but still lose

eblurb vs smely socks Adaptation is the name of the game here, to which I feel eblurb's style is more capable of being picked up on, especially with a greater number of games with the bo3o5 format. I only hate making this predict post because I know no matter who I predict, eblurb will vigorously message me.
Close vs toadandhishaxx This matchup could honestly go either way. I'm thinking knowledge of each meta will be key here, with the most informed picks having the edge. It'll be a very tight series, with Close's proficiency in SM and Toad's proficiency in BW. Whatever the third gen is, it will very likely be the deciding factor in this matchup.
Mubs vs Maki After that catastrophic conclusion to the ADV Cup, Maki's RNG-bending powers will be loaded up to their full capacity. In all seriousness, I'm thinking whoever gets the greatest team support will be the winner here, to which I'm thinking Maki has the edge. I'm also thinking whoever has control over BW and earlier will be at a major advantage here.
ggopw vs Waylaid This series is either going to be incredibly jank or incredibly boring. Waylaid's definitely got a major uphill battle cut out for him with SM and ORAS being two of ggopw's strengths.

Eblurb (49) vs (51) smely socks
Very tight series and probably an entertaining one too. Both have pretty obvious first picks in bw and oras and eblurb has a more obvious strike in sm while smely will likely have to pick his poison between dpp and adv. Eblurb performed well in both of those gens but as also demonstrated a habit of making misplays which may even the playing field. The fact they know each other so well makes this pretty difficult to call but I'm giving smely the edge because lower seed upsets are a staple of these tournaments. (Edit: Eblurb has struck adv and smely struck dpp, giving smely the edge based on sm)

Close (55) vs (45) toadandhishaxx
Close's excellent performance in dpp gives him a pretty easy first pick but toad's best performance was sm, a tier where Close has historically thrived. As such he'll likely have to pick oras (where Close is no slouch) or bw (where Close will presumably have stable supporting him) unless he wants to risk adv. I am underselling toad somewhat here and he's more than capable of winning this but I'm giving Close a small edge here.

Mubs (51) vs (49) Maki
Maki changed his name and lost all his luck in the process, easy dub for mubs. Seriously though, this series is also very much in the balance. Mubs won oras cup but Maki can hold his own there and Mubs can do likewise in adv which Maki would have won if he was still a fox. Bolding Mubs because not bolding someone is boring and I'm going with my gut.

ggopw (60) vs (40) Waylaid
As much as I want him to win it's pretty hard to bold Waylaid here. Ggopw is very good at sm, oras and bw and Waylaid is gonna have to face him in one of those at the very minimum, probably two. To make matters worse they had literally the exact same records in dpp and adv, the tiers ggopw is supposed to be less proficient at. I think an upset is definitely possible if Waylaid unleashes catgirl form if Waylaid has good support and preps well but I obviously have to give the edge to ggopw here.

STABLE PREDICTS WERE REQUESTED SO HERE THEY COME
eblurb (1) vs smely socks (8) (ORAS, BW, SM) all the metas eblurb did well in can easily get struck down by Stable teams so realistically smely just needs to win ORAS which doesn't seem hard looking at how eblurb did in oras cup
Close (2) vs toadandhishaxx (7) (ORAS, DPP, SM) Closeoat is gonna win this for sure, SM goes to him, ORAS goes to toad and then it comes down to DPP which Cup Close won while toad got 0 points. Crushing victory for close
Mubs (3) vs Maki (6) (ADV, ORAS, SM) Maki has a great edge in both ADV and SM. ORAS Maki should still not be underestimated. Rough battle for Mubs imo
ggopw (4) vs Waylaid (5) (ADV ORAS SM) very weird to see ADV picked seeing how they both got 0 points. Realistically it's almost impossible to beat ggopw in ADV which is an almost purely pick based, gimmickless metagame. ORAS is a tier which requires a lot of expertise to be played correctly and Waylaid just doesn't have that. SM is easily a toss up and usually a good pick when you're the one needing to pull an upset, as it's the one where you can most easily 3-0 fish in. This is ggopw we're talking about, though, it's gonna be insanely difficult to 3-0 fish for three games.

GO CLOSE FROM FRITA GANG

eblurb (1) vs smely socks (8) (BW ORAS SM) - I think blurb misplayed his striking. Allowing both SM and ORAS was not a great idea. Smely did best in those two cups, and eblurb did worst in those two. eblurb definitely wins BW, but I think smely wins the other two. smely is good at ADV but I think eblurb could compete with him in that tier, and I would have struck SM if I was blurb.

Close (2) vs toadandhishaxx (7) (DPP ORAS SM) - close wins DPP and SM hard, toad wins ORAS

Mubs (3) vs Maki (6) (ADV ORAS SM) - very close. maki takes ADV, mubs take ORAS, they're both competent SMers. slight favor Maki cause I think he's got the edge in that tier.

ggopw (4) vs Waylaid (5) (ADV ORAS SM) - hard not to bold ggopw. ADV is a toss up, and ggopw is favored in both ORAS SM. waylaid is good at those tiers so its not unthinkable, but its definitely favor ggopw

eblurb (please) vs smely socks (unlock) (BW ORAS SM)
Smely socks and eblurb have both been doing incredible good thus far, both newcomers to the 1v1 metagame but, something that eblurb has that smelly socks doesn't is that eblurb has no morals. Eblurb to this date of 10/26/2020 has not played a single game out of the call and even goes as far to ask his ghosters, to quote him, "can you type it out my mom is in the room lol." This man is insane and will go to lengths to try to win at all costs. Smely is not just playing eblurb, she is playing ggopw, crucify, sice, kaif, solar, me, zio, dom, inkreativ, persephone, 187 fan, allah, boat, and we even have freddy fucking kyogre in the call. I don't see how eblurb loses.

Close (2) vs toadandhishaxx (7) (DPP ORAS SM)
Two very good builders with good ingame, this confrontation is really fire for a quarterfinals. Close dominated the DPP Cup, he was better and played well. On the other hand, Toad has been doing really good and getting past a multitude of teams by people and even building his own. I can't wait to see this battle of two FRITA players going up against each other. Both are goats at SM and during classic have learned the other tiers.

Mubs (me) vs Maki (aeonic) (ADV ORAS SM)
haha maki is a furry hope mubs wins

ggopw (I) vs Waylaid (love you) (ADV ORAS SM)
Shockingly...being a top player doesn’t entitle you to be an asshole to everyone around you, even if you’re “joking”. What we say matters. ggopw winning is a dark timeline for me because he’s just going to set an example that this type of tr*nsphobic behavior is acceptable. It’s not. Of course, ggopw is a good player. He uses creative strategies and makes plays most people don’t even think of to make the chat go LOL for a solid 20-30 minutes every week. There’s a certain level of undeniable skill there, but I can’t say I support the guy anymore. On the flip side, Waylaid takes his craft really seriously from building to playing, and would be a splendid winner. He has had a rocky run, with a great starting run but then meeting the god blurb and then losing to him— the man seemed cursed, but when he has not been held back by Lady Luck, he has manned up and won his games impressively. It’s obviously a close series and it’s even more obvious at this point that I’m quite biased, but it’s just a prediction and it’s my prediction and I really hope John Waylaid wins.

my thoughts on playercards as per request of toadandhishaxx
eblurb: misty has a pretty shit sprite there
close: I like this one because the sprite is actually good and his points are sexy
mubs: sprite looks ass but his points are so sexy omg
ggopw: the sprite is sexy and so is he
waylaid: bad sprite
maki: a child.
toad: cute girl c:
smely: its not bad but idk prolly coulda found a better elesa sprite

also why is it going from adv to sm idk I don't like that anyway bye!

Didn't make predicts for a decent amount of time, I guess it's time to get back at it.

eburb (1) vs smely socks (8) (BW, ORAS, SM) : Taking a risk already, I expect the #1 seed to fall in quarters to smely. The reason for this is that, while eblurb has a superior support and did not steal his seed, I believe smely has an ability to get the upper hand psychologically even while playing outside of his comfort zone, and thus is certainly a bigger threat than what's displayed by his seed. I also think it'll be difficult for blurb to keep his composure while being considered the favorite of a matchup, as he prefers to be the underdog to crush solid opponents. (45-55)
Close (2) vs toadandhishaxx (7) (DPP, ORAS, SM) : This matchup is the proof that the coinflip was rigged to keep a 100% south europe finals from happening. With close and toad both having the edge over one another in dpp and oras respectively, it is likely that sm, a gen they both excel in, will decide it all. Toad has gotten a better run than close in sm cup, so I could give him the edge considering it alone, yet unfortunately for him, I'll go with close, as he might have the additionnal spark of motivation to get the win. However I expect it to be very tight, and I wouldn't be surprised to see toad win. (52-48)
Mubs (3) vs Maki (6) (ADV,ORAS, SM) : Maki is one not to underestimate when it comes to this classic. While their only astonishing performance came in adv cup, they are surely solid in pretty much all gens, with good support, good picking skills and the motivation to prep and do well. Facing them is Mubs, also a solid player with great support, but I believe it won't be sufficient for him to claim the win over Maki. (45-55)
ggopw (4) vs Waylaid (5) (ADV, ORAS, SM) : ggopw gets the bold. What a 'bold' call, indeed (made a pun unwillingly so I'm keeping it ._.). But, well, what else to say, Waylaid is for sure a great player and should take one of the bo5's, but 2 would be needed, against a player who has seemingly no weaknesses : hard to achieve is an euphemism to qualify that. He's surely got what's needed to pull out that performance, however I don't expect it to happen. (60-40)

I apologise for the minimal amount of risk taken in these, but well, that's how it is :/

I have a little experience when it comes to Classic. But that's a history lesson for another day.

Quarterfinals
eblurb (1) vs smely socks (8) (BW ORAS SM) - smely socks wins ORAS & SM
-Well first off history isn't kind to cup winners. History is more fair to balance. Not a single winner a cup has won classic. Not to mention how it's always the lower seeds (#8 for ex.) that end up winning. With that logic that brings me to Eblurb...

Eblurb, either a new face or the ducklett guy from generation 7. Whatever the case is welcome to classic <3. He has preformed well in the oldest gens we currently offer DPP & ADV. But chose to double down on BW. Who can blame them, they ended up being the last surviving player in the BW whilst smely socks didn't even make it past round 1. Eblurb's decision to leave SM up will be an interesting one. Which statistics would dictate make this series more even removing his advantage he earned by being the 1st seed.

Smely Socks. The kid from that other street you hear from your mother is the sweetest thing whilst you continue to fail your math homework and do yard work. Smely, coming in as the 8th seed puts them at a disadvantage. But if the saying is history repeats itself, Smely Socks might just win it all ;)They ended up making semi-finals in ORAS, a generation one can only believe that chose believing very strongly in their ability to preform, unlike Eblurb. Who just like Smely Socks did BW, went winless. Effectively making the #1 vs #8 aspect of seeding a bad match-up with SM looming for final. Smely Socks has worked hard to get to playoffs. And was barley able to squeeze in, which motivate anyone. It's just 3 people that stand between your way and joining the hall of champions. You got a chance, play your best and have fun. ^^

Close (2) vs toadandhishaxx (7) (DPP ORAS SM) - toadandhishaxx wins DPP & SM
-Two very skilled users. Each having been apart of the 1v1 for a while. This will be either a stomp or a must see match-up. I hope we get the latter :3

Close comes in as the DPP cup winner. Which effectively ended CP2's tournament. Hitting him with the "nothing personal kid" ; Close started the tournament being the only player to not drop a series in any generation. Being able to play 5 generation and doing well in all is a great feat by itself. Picking DPP when you win is a no brainer when you win the cup and your opponent didn't score a single point, which can also lead to Close being surprised if not careful. But we all know Close, likes to add more meaning to their name and is a very entertaining player to watch. GL HF!

Toad, what can you say about Toad that isn't not true. He is returning to Classic where he has always preformed. Long time pal, and hope he does well. But before the battles start Toad already making strides to put the events in his favor. Not only will he have the surprise factor in DPP but ended up getting ORAS & SM which were his two best preformed generations this Classic. And with his opponent basically solo-running 1 generation Toad has already shown he's a dark horse to win it all this year. Go hax people like you do

Mubs (3) vs Maki (6) (ADV ORAS SM) - Maki wins ADV & SM
-This is one of those match-ups where two good players get matched-up with each other but none really have the name value when it comes to the generations they chose. Mubs is coming in new to this, as Maki continues to preform well hoping to win the big one finally they've been working for!

Mubs, for those who've been away from showdown for a while was the 2v2 room guy. How will that transfer into 1v1, your guess is as good as mine. But whatever he is doing seems to be working out for him, so hats off to him. Mubs picking ORAS was the expected result. Although leaving SM up when SM has been a staple for Maki in the past seems to be a interesting move on his part. Is it because he doesn't have the confidence to preform in another generation? Time will tell if this was a mistake or a plan on the behalf of Mubs o.o

Maki and their fox. Maki a year ago started making a name for themselves, coming out of no where. As they continue their success in 1v1, one must ask if this is the tournament they finally catch their big break. Maki surely has the tools but will luck be on their side this time? Maki preformed well in ADV whilst his counterpart this week hasn't seemed to grasp those older gens. Maki got some good luck so far, but will it hold out? GL buddy <3

ggopw (4) vs Waylaid (5) (ADV ORAS SM) ggopw wins ADV & ORAS
-Depending on who you ask, this is the finals round 1. ggopw a staple of 1v1's metagame for years, vs Waylaid. The 1v1 prodigy groomed for success by past & present greats. This will be a must see match-up you don't want to miss!

ggopw, what's there to say. He won some tours before, plays ok I suppose and well that's about it...I'm joking for those who may be new to the 1v1 scene. ggopw is many people's favorite to win it all and doesn't look to disappoint. Making SM finals and running strong underrated pokemon/combos to get in this man's head is like a trying to understand why teenage girls like Starbucks and texting lol

Waylaid, the Jimmy Neutron of 1v1. The lvl 1 squeaker who became a lvl 30 catgirl! (Idk if that's good but DEG said it would make me seem cool) Waylaid has preformed well and made great progress from their benchwarmer days. Doing well in all cups Waylaid has set themselves up success but are dawned with the task of taking down the raid boss round 1. Best of luck to you, HEATRAN UP!

James155 semis predicts
Eblurb vs ggopw, eblurb never loses, and he will absolutely destroy ggopw, no one stands a chance vs this menace
(Close vs Toad) vs Maki, close is gonna beat toad which was stated in my other prediction, but close will also beat maki because close better.
not to flex or anything but my predicts are 100 percent so far, I’m gonna get the whole tour right.

URSA CLASSIC
eblurb (1) vs ggopw (4)
At the start of Classic, I'm honestly not sure who I would have bolded here. It would have been a tough decision. While ggopw is obviously still a very good player, I think eblurb has ascended lately. He's arguably in the best form of his relatively brief Smogon career, which is impressive considering all of the accolades he has accumulated up to this point. He's been outplaying people left and right, and as we all know, his prep game is one of the best on the site. eblurb is one of the best BW players of all time, so he should be favored in that game; it wouldn't shock me if ggopw won, though. I've always been pretty high on ggopw's ORAS abilities, so I give him a big edge there. ADV is a bit more of a question mark, and it's probably about even. The variance tiers will probably decide this series, but I have to like ggopw's odds here. I give him a super slight edge in SM, while DPP is anyone's game. This should be a very close and entertaining series, but I'll pick eblurb to win 3-2, since the eblurb effect.
