Alright, time to drop some real hot takes here. I have been playing 1v1 for a while now, (thanks elo) and I've fine tuned my team to the point of that it's all I use, and I haven't changed it in more than three weeks. And while two members of that team aren't important, one of them is. Specifically, I'm nomming Bulu for B. Why? Well, for his strength and good physical bulk. Specifically, this set.

Banded Bulu
EVs-252 hp, 252 atk, and 4 spe (For outspeeding other no invest 75's)
Ability- Grassy terrain (obviously)
Item- Band
Moves- Wood Hammer
Superpower
Zen Headbutt
Stone Miss

The reason I use this set is because of the giant strength it has. Bulu already has fantastic attack, and with a 120 bp stab move move, it would already wreck. But with grassy terrain, it gets a 50% damage buff. That would already be absurd, but with Band too, it gets to stupid levels of power. it KOs many resists through sheer power alone. For example, depending on the roll and defense invest, It kills Haxorus in one Wood hammer. It also kills Lando through intimidate, and It does over 70% percent through Aigislash's shield form. And it is the most consistent counter to Gyra I've found. I have yet to lose to one. Bulu's Wood Hammer kills through both the intimidate and neutrality when they inevitably try for Ddance in non-mega form. And a big benefit of Bulu is it's resistance to sleep powder and the like. The only sleep in the meta that affects it is Gengar Hypnosis, (Which doesn't matter because of poison stab) and Yawn. plus, it can win some dicey matchups by sheer power alone. For example, Type Null. Null has it's huge defense, but Bulu's power can overwhelm it. And having a good natural defense is very useful. It survives fake out+ice punch from m-Medicham and fake out-return from lopunny, and it easily survives anything Zeraora can throw at it. (With the exception of some very stupid sets like firium Z) It can tank non stab super effective coverage and very strong neutral attacks. The last of it's amazing traits is it's ability to pair up. virtually everything Bulu is weak to, M-Gyra covers. (Mega Char, Drago, Greninja, Meloetta, All of the sturdy traps, and Venasaur M, to name a few.) While I know that doesn't count when specifically talking about Bulu, but both pairing with and demolishing one of the best in the tier is very useful. But Bulu isn't all sunshine and rainbows. It has some serious problems. Most important is lack of Fairy stab. It sucks to not have that. And it's ass spd and spe really suck too. It loses to a whole lot of stuff because it's ohkod and is outspeed. Bulu also loses hard to 2/4 of S tier, and usually loses to one.
IMO, Bulu deserves B. He has absurd power and good physical bulk, but has garbo speed and spd. He loses to a lot of influential pokemon, but he can also muscle through a lot of his losing battles with his pure strength. C+ just isn't really representative of his viability. He has a niche that he's best at, (which is a slow nuker with good physical bulk, or just a non Z-Crystal wallbreaker) need unlike most of C+. He has some huge problems, but you can work around those with your other two team members. All in all, Bulu is completely viable, although niche, so I feel that B is fair.
If you were nomming the set, you should've specified the set, as well as posted it in the Sets VR thread.

Nominating Vaporeon for C-/C/C+
Vivi (Vaporeon) (F) @ Waterium Z
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 168 HP / 200 Def / 116 SpA / 24 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Yawn
- Protect
- Fake Tears
- Hydro Pump
116+ SpA Vaporeon Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 8 HP / 0 SpD Charizard-Mega-X: 303-357 (101.3 - 119.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
116+ SpA Vaporeon Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. -2 252 HP / 252+ SpD Charizard-Mega-X: 423-498 (117.5 - 138.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Adaptability Porygon-Z Hyper Beam vs. 168 HP / 24 SpD Vaporeon: 374-442 (84.4 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
116+ SpA Vaporeon Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. 12 HP / 0 SpD Porygon-Z: 334-394 (106.3 - 125.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
80 Atk Metagross-Mega Thunder Punch vs. 168 HP / 200 Def Vaporeon: 180-214 (40.6 - 48.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
116+ SpA Vaporeon Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. -2 8 HP / 0 SpD Charizard-Mega-Y in Sun: 464-548 (155.1 - 183.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
24 SpA Magearna Twinkle Tackle (195 BP) vs. 168 HP / 24 SpD protected Vaporeon: 68-80 (15.3 - 18%) -- possible 6HKO
24 SpA Magearna Fleur Cannon vs. 168 HP / 24 SpD Vaporeon: 183-216 (41.3 - 48.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
or if he calm minds
116+ SpA Vaporeon Hydro Vortex (185 BP) vs. -1 232 HP / 36 SpD Magearna: 339-400 (94.4 - 111.4%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
Vaporeon does what you expect it to do. It beats most A or higher ranked Pokemons provided you get one good roll, excepting Dragonite, Gyarados-Mega, Mew, Magnezone, Slowbro-Mega, and Zygarde. Even without good rolls, it can hold its own against prominent Pokemons such as not thicc Charizard X's, Magearna, some Porygons, Meloetta, and Megagross. It also beats most Pokemons in the meta below A- that don't have electric/grass stab, sturdy, or a resistance to Hydro Vortex. Although it faces competition from other fat water types like Tapu Fini and Primarina, it has advantages over each of them. For example, it has a better Magearna matchup than Primarina and has a winnable matchup against Charizard Y, which Fini struggles with. It also has a very good matchup with Metagross, which can trouble the other two. I believe it deserves at least a spot in C- because of its 100 accuracy sleep, multitude of positive matchups against higher tiers, ability to cheese unfavorable matchups with hax, amazing bulkiness, and because of how adorable it is.

Hey everyone. I found a new Pokémon with some decent potential that is not really seen around here in 1v1:

Mega Houndoom UR —> Untested

Mega Houndoom has some pretty nice stats all around and it gains nice bulk after Mega Evolving. Fire / Dark is a cool offensive typing and combined with coverage moves and a base 140 Special Attack makes this thing strong right away.

Here is my prototype set! The Snarl Duskanroc set inspired some of the mechanics here. I think it was VG who made that but anyways:

bork bork (Houndoom-Mega) (M) @ Houndoominite
Ability: Solar Power
EVs: 192 HP / 248 SpD / 68 Spe
Calm Nature
- Snarl
- Fire Blast
- Rest
- Flame Charge

I tried to make this thing versatile and on paper it looks nice. 192 HP / 248+ Sp.Def lets it live one 252+ Adaptability Hyper Beam from Porygon-Z. The rest of the EVs were dumped into speed and after a Flame Charge it outpaces 252 speed Choice Scarf Porygon-Z and 252+ speed Zeraora. Flame Charge also lets it reliably beat Jumpluff. For the purposes of this set it is strong enough that it does not need any Special Attack investment:

0 SpA Houndoom-Mega Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Porygon-Z: 201-237 (53.7 - 63.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

I never found out what Snarl / Rest can take on, which is why I think this should go in untested.

Other options you say? We have Nasty Plot, Sludge Bomb, Counter, Will-O-Wisp, Thunder Fang, Dark Pulse, and Sucker Punch (examples for now).

Anyways, I think Houndoom has pretty good speed and power, plus solid enough bulk to be versatile. What are your thoughts?

EDIT 8:09 PM: I have tested this thing against a couple sets. It has pretty good matchups vs. Magearna, Naganadel, scarf P-Z, and psychium Lele (Z-Psychic/Reflect + CM).

Golisopod UR-> UT.
Golisopod @ Assault Vest
Ability: Emergency Exit
EVs: 252 HP / 164 Atk / 92 SpD
Adamant Nature
- First Impression
- Sucker Punch
- Drill Run/Poison Jab/ Liquidation
- Rock Tomb/ Rock Slide
This set beats zards, thats about it. from my testing it just feels like a second araquanid, but it is slightly more bulky and has coverage in exchange for the water bubble+ hydro vortex. other sets can beat lopunny if you invest a bit more defensively. regardless I feel as if this mon has potential, especially because of the coverage that it has that araquanid lacks.

Neat set, I only have one question. how does this do against magerna/magnezone?

I think snarl might be mandatory against Modest Z-zap zone, but I haven't done the calcs yet.
Edit : nvm
252+ SpA Magnezone Gigavolt Havoc (190 BP) vs. 192 HP / 248+ SpD Houndoom-Mega: 264-312 (77.8 - 92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Also, is there a place where I can just think out loud without any form and have people pitch in to find the best sets for mons I'd like to use (and also help others ofc) ?

That's not a nom, just food for thoughts about Victini's viability :

Z-Will-o'wisp is actually a good way to beat Sturdy pokemons (bar Magnezone). The burn status actually prevents most of them from straight up oneshotting you with their Z-move, and the attack boost lets you deal with them once the burn gets rid of sturdy.

252+ Atk burned Donphan Tectonic Rage (180 BP) vs. 144 HP / 0 Def Victini: 306-360 (81.1 - 95.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk burned Donphan Continental Crush (200 BP) vs. 144 HP / 0 Def Victini: 226-266 (59.9 - 70.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk burned Donphan Ice Shard vs. 144 HP / 0 Def Victini: 11-13 (2.9 - 3.4%) -- possibly the worst move ever

(Ice shard's calcs being there because Priority is nice)

Meanwhile :
+1 252+ Atk Victini V-create vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Donphan: 345-406 (89.8 - 105.7%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO after burn damage

Heatran: B+ to A-/A

I think in a meta where mega charizard is the best and most pokemon by virtue of its versatility, pokes that can beat it + other threats are usually pretty good. Heatran, one of these pokemon, is really cool in the meta right now. I think what really limits its rank at B+ is the notion that it needs to run overheat, rock tomb, earthpower, and maybe flash cannon. I think heatran is very versatile in the metagame right now and the set that i mentioned earlier is super "meh". On balloon, I think taunt and hp ice are really cool options. Taunt is awesome for those Registeel/Serp cores that kind of showed up randomly on the really high parts of the ladder, but also cool for bulky pokes in general like venusaur and kind of jumpluff. HP ice is good for landorust/garchomp if you're weak to that. But I also think both Grassium-Z and Firium-Z are good in the meta. Free wins vs primarina/tapufini/slowbro teams (if you build right) are really cool and it can beat gyarados too. Firium-Z with metal sound on overheat is super nice for all the super bulky meloettas running around not to mention tapu lele and porygonz that like to boost their special defense stats. You can still beat those regi/serp cores just as well with it.

Overall heatran is a super nice pokemon in the current metagame and also easy to put on a team to cover really relevant metagame pokemon like steel types, charizard, and faries. Garchomp too because banded garchomp does a lot of the same things and sub + groundz is nice for pokes like venusaur so I think that should rise.
---
Also another look at this B+ rank is really confusing intersting.. Why pokemon that define 1v1 like tapufini and primarina are ranked the same as MAGNETON really bothers me. Magneton should definetely drop, completely worse magnezone (Gyarados will quake magneton just like it will quake magnezone) and I think victini should drop too. I think tapufini and primarina should rise to probably A rank but A- works too I guess. A lot of tried and true pokemon reside in this rank for whatever reason like mega altaria and genesect while pokes like naganadel, sawk and mega lopunny are in lower ranks? I think a lot of B+ pokemon should rise, specifically mega altaria, garchomp, genesect, primarina, mega sableye, tapu fini, mega venusaur for sure, mega tyranitar and rising star zeraora. I think B pokes like necrozma (since guessing whether offensive or defensive is a pain) and the previously mentioned B pokes should rise along with some B+ pokes.

Serperior should rise with registeel too. Serperior in B I think and registeel in B-

Appreciate the enthusiasm, though you're off on a few points here:
  • You kinda need tomb + ep for zards, unless you're running physdef metal sound + ancient power or something, and you always need a fire move, which rly only leaves you the one free slot.
  • HP Ice isn't killing lando/chomp super reliably
    • 252+ SpA Heatran Hidden Power Ice vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 348-412 (91 - 107.8%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO (tbf here, most landos don't run hp so meh)
    • 252+ SpA Heatran Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 332-392 (92.9 - 109.8%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
  • Gyarados that mega vs a balloonless tran deserve to eat a Z-Solar Beam-
  • Magneton with Timid outpaces Adamant Gyarados by 1 point in Speed, and ohkos with Z-Zap, in addition to maintaining just about all the same matchups as Magnezone, plus reliably beating a couple more things, thanks to its ability to outspeed things like Meloetta and Heatran, at the expense of losing the ability to KO other things.
  • No matter how much these B+ mons "define 1v1", they simply just aren't as viable as their A- counterparts, namely, they don't beat as many top tier pokemon as reliably, or they simply struggle far too much with everything else.

Also please be sure to clarify if this is just a nom for heatran or if you're also nomming all the other things you think should rise-

whats this bullet wave

With the rise of grass types such as bulu and serp, gren is at a really good spot at the moment. It can beat the aforementioned serp, naga, slowbro, zygarde all them shits. Charizards bulked to tank a specs hydro cannon get blasted back by modest. Magnezone loses to hp ground. Hell even, shit like choice band is seen from time to time. hp ground hp fire ice beam hydro cannon grass knot dark pulse extrasensory shits got it all

082MS.png
B+ to B-

What the fuck does this dogshit do except beating less stuff than zone and beating gyarados speedcrept for zone. I love ton but srsly?

282-m.png
A- to A

Gardevoir is really good in the current meta, beating Lele, porygonz, gyarados and it's an actual dnite check. Beats even stuff like slowbro, zygarde and landot. Definitely A tier material

373.png
C+ to B- / B

dragoniumz with iron defense outrage roost and dd is a really solid set. I've personally had decent amount of ladder success with it. Notable matchups are gyarados, kommo-o, slow charizard-x, charizard-y, zeraora (not dragz) and landorus-t. B- is definitely not out of nowhere and even B wouldn't be too far out

719-m.png
B- to B

Diancie has seen a small spark in usage as a zard killer that also beats stuff like Altaria, Kommo-o. Magnet Rise allows it to beat Donphan and Golem. rock tomb magnet rise moonblast earthpower/diamondstorm/hp fire and even calm mind.

497.png
B- to B+ or higher

this thing is fucking amazing, its a successful subseed staller while having leaf storm boosts to have any power. It beats gyara magearna magnezone metagross. It can even beat heatran. this is fucking broken pls S tier tda san

B+ to B-

What the fuck does this dogshit do except beating less stuff than zone and beating gyarados speedcrept for zone. I love ton but srsly?

A- to A

Gardevoir is really good in the current meta, beating Lele, porygonz, gyarados and it's an actual dnite check. Beats even stuff like slowbro, zygarde and landot. Definitely A tier material

B- is definitely not out of nowhere and even B wouldn't be too far out
Gren A -> strong agree. it does so much, I feel as if this is self explanatory.
Mag B+ -> B- Agree, even regular magnezone is kinda falling out of favor right now, I wouldn't even be opposed to C+.
M-Gardevoir A- -> A I haven't play tested with this mon enough to make a strong opinion
Mence C+ -> B-/B Through my playtesting, 9/10 times its a worse dragonite. its fine where it is.

UT to D / thrown out of VR
While the priority first impression is nice, thats all it has going for it, as much as I love this mon, its niche isn't even that good, with. it beats a whole 1 S rank mon, being mega zards, and then you have to go all the way to A to find another favorable match up. This mon just doesn't do enough to justify a spot above D when araquanid exists and does its job better 9/10 times

EDIT: I would like to edit my vr ranking to just keep it UT for now. I feel as if I haven't given it enough of a chance, and I have yet to see anyone else give an opinion.

mence actually beats gyarados which dragonite can't do without some niche electriumz set as well as outrage zera which completely counters regular dnite, it's definitely worthy of B- at least.
